Job Description

To transfer services in Network Rail from heritage TDM based systems to SDH/PDH and IP/MPLS based fixed networks based on delivering full design (GRIP 5) to which the project will be built (by others). It will include design/re-design, implement, configure/re-configure, and troubleshoot across Network Rail Telecoms estate, enforcing conformance to Network Rail's policies, standards, and safety / corporate objectives.
  1. Contribute to Network Design solutions and implementation plans whilst building effective relationships with the design team and customers delivering their business requirements.
  2. Manage the production of Network Designs that adhere to schedule plans whilst maintaining a high level of quality and integrity through peer review processes.
  3. Manage the service offering and product catalogue, including implementation SLAs, to support customers in having a clear understanding of capabilities.
  4. Develop and maintain documentation relating to network configuration and network mapping processes as well as service records.
  5. Provide expertise in monitoring and testing network performance, providing network performance statistics and reports.
  6. Responsible for network asset management including maintenance of network component inventory and related documentation and technical specifications information.
  7. Inter-networking troubleshootingin a large-scale network in Enterprise environment including troubleshooting
  8. Contribute to design requirements, customer issues, whilst educating others to the adherence of Network Designs within the organisation.
  9. Review the requirements of Network Operations to confirm existing and new services are operationally acceptable for transition into a live environment.
  10. Provide technical Tier 4 support to Network Rail on complex faults and network outages. Working with Suppliers to confirm that technical issues are controlled and where possible mitigated.
  11. Manage compliance to CDM requirements, such as identification and mitigation of hazards through design, which could be influenced by the telecoms system driving safety by design
  12. Manage complex design requirements, customer issues, whilst educating others to the adherence of Network Designs within the organisation.
  13. Undertake the role of Designer/CRE/CEM in accordance with NR/L2/INI/02009

Essential
  • Significant experience in the successful design and implementation of telecoms network in the telecoms industries including WAN technologies such as SDH/PDH, IP/MPLS and TDM and Good understanding of LAN/WAN/SAN architecture
  • Strong engineering/architecture network skills in relation to Network Design Engineering.
  • Expertise in fixed network configuration, testing, trouble shooting and general network management best practices
  • Skilled in developing and maintaining documentation relating to network configuration and network mapping processes as well as service records.
  • Competent in monitoring and testing network performance, providing network performance statistics and reports
  • Educated to degree standard or equivalent in an Engineering subject
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution
  • Excellent communication skills at all levels.


Desirable
  • Network Certification (Cisco CCNA/NP, CCDA/DP, CCIE, Juniper JNCxx),

Prior knowledge and experience of Network Rail operational networks and engineering
