Role Overview
We are seeking a DevOps Engineer (SFIA Level 4) to support and maintain secure, scalable AWS infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines for a public sector client. You'll work with a reasonable degree of autonomy, contributing to infrastructure automation, deployment reliability, and observability, while collaborating closely with senior engineers and the wider delivery team.
Key Responsibilities
Design, build, and maintain infrastructure-as-code using Terraform and Ansible across AWS environments
Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines in GitLab, supporting automated build, test, and deployment workflows
Write and maintain automation scripts and tooling using Bash and Python
Manage and support API gateway and reverse Proxy tooling, including Kong (CE/EE) and Nginx
Configure and maintain monitoring and alerting using Prometheus, Grafana, and Alert Manager
Manage compute and container infrastructure including EC2, Auto Scaling Groups, ECS (monitoring), and ECR
Administer networking and security configuration, including Route53, Security Groups, IAM, ACM, and KMS
Support infrastructure deployments using CloudFormation
Manage storage infrastructure using S3, including life cycle policies and access controls
Participate in incident response, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis
Follow and support security standards, change management, and release governance processes
Contribute to sprint planning, refinement, and other agile ceremonies
Support continuous improvement of automation, observability, and platform reliability
Required Skills & Experience
Experience in a DevOps, Platform Engineering, or Infrastructure Engineering role
Hands-on experience with Terraform and Ansible for infrastructure as code
Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using GitLab
Proficiency in Bash and Python Scripting for automation
Experience with Kong (CE/EE) and/or Nginx for API gateway/reverse Proxy management
Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, and Alert Manager for monitoring and alerting
Working knowledge of AWS compute and container services: EC2, Auto Scaling Groups, ECS, ECR
Solid understanding of AWS networking and security: Route53, Security Groups, IAM, ACM, KMS
Experience with CloudFormation for infrastructure deployment
Experience managing S3 storage in a production environment
Comfortable working within established processes and escalating appropriately, while developing toward greater independent ownership
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Excellent communication and collaboration abilities

Location: Newcastle, Manchester, or Leeds (in-office one day per week)
