As a result of investment and restructure within the service, we are looking to recruit a highly motivated and enthusiastic B6 Clinical Coding Delivery Manager to join our Trust.

Your role will include responsibilities for the day to day management of Clinical Coding staff to ensure all coding is completed timely and accurately for SUS deadlines and support Payment by Results with the assistance of all colleagues. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring provision of an optimum clinical coding service across Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

In addition, the post holder will be responsible for management of any coding queries and, together with the Management team, will be proactive in liaising with clinicians and other Trust staff to review and discuss coding.

Applicants will be expected to work across any of the locations under MWL.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will provide operational delivery management support, both generally and for specific time limited projects to the Clinical Coding Manager. The Clinical Coding Delivery Team Manager will have day to day responsibility for the management of clinical coding staff, providing leadership and guidance to ensure that patient activity data is fully and accurately coded within mandated timescales, whilst adhering to national and local standards.

We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.

Specialist Regional Services

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Job responsibilities KEY DUTIES

• To be responsible for the day to day management of the operational delivery section of the clinical coding team and focusing on maintaining the department's operational effectiveness and a high standard of work is always maintained.
• Responsible for the day to day processes needed to support the operational delivery of the clinical coding service, such as, but not limited to, the management of Teams channels and review of rotas, etc.
• Contributes, as a member of the Clinical Coding Department, to extract and analyse highly complex/sensitive patient data from all patient clinical records and to identify and select the appropriate diagnosis/procedure in line with current National guidelines. Judgement would need to be applied with regards to the translation of complex cases whilst ensuring accuracy.
• Responsible for the management of all clinical coding queries.
• Responsible for planning own workload and that of the clinical coding team to ensure that the objectives of the whole team are achieved.
• Take responsibility for keeping up to date with current issues and developments within the coding department.
• Be responsible for creating an environment conducive to the acquisition of further knowledge and skills.
• Ensure that all clinical coding is completed accurately and timely in accordance with national and contractual mandates and is delivered to the required quality and coverage. Provide regular updates to the Clinical Coding Manager on progress throughout the month.

Person Specification Qualifications

• Excellent standard of education
• Accredited Clinical Coding Qualification (ACC)
• Degree level education or equivalent experience
• Managerial qualification or equivalent experience
• Has completed the Clinical Coding Standards Refresher course within the last 12 months

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

• Can demonstrate 'standards exceeded' coding accuracy levels as set out in the Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT)
• Knowledge of national benchmarking systems relevant to clinical coding, eg HED and metrics such as SHMI/HSMR
• Experience of working with clinicians and/or senior staff
• Experience of undertaking presentations relating to clinical coding
• Working in an office environment
• Excellent medical terminology and anatomy and physiology knowledge
• Able to use own initiative on a daily basis to make operational decisions
• Can organise and prioritise own and team workload
• Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
• Works under pressure to meet sometimes extremely challenging deadlines
• Knowledge of data protection legislation, Caldicott and other relevant guidance
• Excellent knowledge and understanding of clinical coding rules and conventions
• Effective inter personal skills
• Microsoft Office skills, knowledge of EPR system
• Knowledge of NHS classifications, ie inpatients, day cases, etc
• Knowledge of Payment by Results

• Excellent concentration skills, with attention to detail
• Flexible approach to work
• Use of PC/VDU for substantial proportion of the working day
• Ability to travel across the various sites of the Trust
