Job Description

Our Team: How We Enrich Everyday Life

You'll be joining Bauer Media Audio (BMA), Europe's biggest commercial audio broadcaster, connecting audiences across nine markets to the music, storiesand experiences they love. Bauer Media Audio is making a significant investment in a new in house software engineering hub in Manchester. This new hub reinforces Manchester's position as a key technology centre for Bauer Media Audio, alongside its existing locations. We're creating a new engineering team to build innovative business critical solutions that will power Bauer Media's audio platform of the future. Our team is built around squads, each aligned to a distinct value stream, with a layer of cross squad roles - people whose expertise and support spans the whole team. Each squad will be led by a Product Manager and Lead Engineer, working in partnership and jointly accountable for their squad's work and outcomes. Squads are intentionally small - typically around five to six engineers - keeping them focused, collaborative, and able to move quickly. Our team thrives on collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to delivering high quality, scalable solutions, working closely with product and technology peers to ensure our platforms meet the evolving needs of the business and our international markets.

The Difference You Will Make

As a Software Engineer, you'll contribute to building the audio platform of the future at Bauer Media Audio. Working alongside senior engineers, you'll build and maintain features and services, grow your skills, and take on increasing ownership as the team scales. Working closely with your squad, you will contribute to ensuring the squad's work aligns with our technical direction and product priorities, and to a culture of continuous improvement, shared ownership, and engineering excellence. You will play a key role in helping to create a diverse, welcoming and inclusive environment that is psychologically safe, where everyone can be their authentic selves and do their best work, every day.

Your Role
  • Build and deliver
  • Develop and maintain features and services across the platform, taking increasing ownership as you and the team grow.
  • Contribute to prototyping and early stage feature work.
  • Participate in code review - giving and receiving feedback constructively as part of how the team improves together.
  • Contribute to technical discussions within your squad, sharing your perspective and growing your understanding of how the broader architecture fits together.
  • Collaborate with product and technology colleagues to build a shared understanding of what you're building and why.
  • Champion quality and operational excellence - apply DevOps practices and contribute to CI/CD, automation, and observability as a natural part of how you work.
  • Write and maintain tests (unit, integration) and apply security best practices in day to day development.
  • Participate in incident management rotas, providing hands on technical support and clear communication during high pressure situations.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across experience levels - giving and receiving support, pairing, and sharing knowledge as part of a team that grows together.
  • Play your part in growing the team - contributing to interviews and helping new engineers settle in quickly.
What We Are Looking For

Experience of some but not necessarily all of the following:

  • Technical capability - solid engineering experience, with the ability to work independently on features across frontend and backend - including strong problem solving and debugging skills; flexibility to move across front end and back end technologies, adapting quickly to different parts of the stack as the team and product evolve; familiarity with our core stack: Node/TypeScript, React, Java, and AWS - or a comparable modern stack; exposure to Kubernetes and Kafka a plus; knowledge of microservices, APIs, and cloud based deployment; CI/CD, containerisation, and DevOps practices as part of how you work day to day; security best practices applied in day to day development; an interest in AI assisted development tooling and how it can improve productivity and code quality.
  • Collaboration and communication - good communication skills - able to collaborate across disciplines and express technical ideas clearly; a constructive approach to giving and receiving feedback, and a habit of sharing knowledge with colleagues; an inclination to document your work and decisions to support the wider team.
  • Industry and delivery experience - experience working in a product led, agile software delivery environment; some familiarity with incident management or on call responsibilities; media, audio streaming, or consumer platform experience is a plus.
Working Pattern and Location

This is a permanent, hybrid, full time role with an in office presence twice a week in our Manchester hub. Like all roles in the team, this one includes participation in incident management rotas - we schedule these collaboratively, taking into account everyone's responsibilities and commitments outside of work.

Why Join Us?

The chance to work in a team building platform that reaches millions of listeners across Europe, with real impact on the products people use every day. A growing engineering organisation investing heavily in its people, practices, and technology - with genuine support for skills development. A collaborative, product led environment where engineering has a clear and respected voice in shaping business outcomes. An environment that values empathy, accountability, continuous learning, and engineering excellence.

What's in it for you
