About the team
The Borrowing (lending) business is growing rapidly across existing products and with new initiatives. Our second line of defence Credit Model Validation team provides independent oversight and challenge to our model development teams, helping Monzo grow safely and delivering good outcomes for our customers.
Responsibilities
- Lead hands on independent validation of credit decisioning models, including machine learning, decision science and NPV models.
- Support oversight and validation of broader credit risk models such as IFRS9, stress testing and economic response models.
- Develop a deep understanding of Monzo's credit models and provide impactful input to improve modelling capabilities.
- Monitor ongoing model performance to ensure models perform within risk thresholds and advise first line of defence teams as needed.
- Conduct statistical analyses to assess model performance, building challenger models where appropriate.
- Improve the Model Risk Framework by overseeing policies, standards and procedures, ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines.
- Write clear validation reports and present findings and actions in relevant committees.
- Partner with credit strategy and modelling teams and wider risk teams to embed the model risk framework and establish consistent validation standards.
- Lead adoption of AI tools to enhance the model validation approach.
Qualifications
- Strong background in credit model development and/or validation, especially decision science scorecards, underwriting PD models and NPV/unit economics models.
- Data driven with strong analytical skills and deep understanding of statistical techniques for credit and model risk; proficiency in SQL and Python is essential.
- Experience with data visualisation tools such as Tableau or Looker is a plus.
- Knowledge of how models are used in real time decisioning and lending strategies, balancing commercial and risk outcomes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, able to articulate problems and solutions clearly to non experts.
- Track record of building and maintaining trusting relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
- Impact driven and proactive in identifying issues and opportunities to improve outcomes for customers and the business.
- Passion for technology and excitement about Monzo's innovations.
