Job Description

ICT Apprentice

Closing date: 02 July 2026

King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (KCH) is recruiting two ICT Technician Apprentices to work within the busy and dynamic ICT department. Apprentices will be paid an apprentice rate salary while undergoing training and academic tuition in this full time on site role.

The successful candidates will assist in the provision of support and maintenance of KCH's ICT equipment, such as personal computers (PC) and telephones, helping ensure that frontline services are delivered safely and consistently. They may visit users at their workplace at the various hospital sites in south London, over the telephone, or via Remote Desktop Connection.

Applicants must have a keen interest in an ICT career and GCSE passes in Maths, English and ICT (grades 4 9 or C A ), with demonstrated ability in PC maintenance, both hardware and software. Candidates should describe projects they have undertaken and show willingness to continue with academic study for the full two year course, and an understanding of confidentiality and safeguarding sensitive information.

As this is a Level 3 measured training post, applicants should demonstrate that they will benefit from significant up skilling and can adhere to the Trust's values. If you are already qualified in ICT, this post may not be suitable.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide and receive information and give advice over the phone or by remote connection for fault diagnoses, rectification, software upgrade or installation and configuration of PC and telecoms systems.
  • Analyse, investigate and process specialist or complex ICT information in accordance with policies and procedures and record fault logs within the Service Desk software application.
  • Maintain user IT accounts and system rights for networked and clinical systems.
  • Reset passwords and transfer/accept accounts for users of NHS Net e mail.
  • Occasionally test and evaluate ICT devices and appliances under the direction of the manager.
  • Train and develop own ICT skills through in house and external training where available and mandatory training.
  • Adjust accordingly to variable workloads, interruptions and staff shortages.
  • Ensure appropriate stock levels are maintained.
  • Ensure Service Level Agreements (SLA) are adhered to.
  • Occasionally undertake ICT system testing.
  • Assist people to the best of your ability when answering the Service Desk Helpline.
Job responsibilities

As an apprentice you will learn to deliver support services to the highest standards across all KCH sites. Being adaptable to change is a key attribute for this post and you will be working with a keyboard and physical equipment installations, sometimes in difficult conditions. You will be expected to quickly develop the ability to prioritise your own workload and carry out duties with minimal supervision.

Successful applicants will be required to work toward:

  • Level 3 ICT Technician Apprentice Qualification, with an external training company.
  • Undertake self directed study for a portfolio and manage own learning time.
  • Undertake End Point Assessment tasks which could consist of professional discussion, test, project or observation - a Trust provided, externally led assessment determining successful completion of the apprenticeship.

The apprentice selection process is via application and interview, most likely via Microsoft Teams or at the KCH Denmark Hill site, and a written ICT skills test likely taken on the same date as the interview. Applicants must provide access to Teams or arrive on site as appropriate.
