The Opportunity
We are recruiting for a Progress Developer for an established organisation with a strong in-house engineering function. The role sits within a structured delivery environment, working on enterprise-grade applications where quality, reliability and governance matter.
You'll be hands-on with Progress OpenEdge 4GL / ABL, delivering new functionality and improving existing services. You'll work closely with Testing and Change Management, producing well-engineered solutions to agreed timescales, while also contributing to continuous improvement across development standards and internal processes.

What you'll be doing
You'll be involved across the full development lifecycle: analysis through build, unit testing, and controlled release.
Key responsibilities
- Analyse requirements and design solutions for enterprise applications using Progress OpenEdge 4GL / ABL.
- Develop and maintain high-quality code, including unit testing and peer review practices.
- Collaborate closely with Testing and Change Management teams to ensure release readiness and smooth deployments.
- Deliver to time and budget: planning work, estimating effort, and managing priorities across multiple initiatives.
- Contribute to continuous improvement: propose enhancements to internal processes, tooling, and coding conventions.
- Adhere to (and help reinforce) development standards: naming conventions, code structure, reusable components, and consistent error handling.
- Troubleshoot and resolve defects: log analysis, data investigation, and performance diagnosis.

Essential skills
- Commercial experience with Progress / OpenEdge 4GL / ABL (development + analysis)
- Experience building enterprise-level applications in a structured software delivery environment
- Comfortable working alongside QA/testing, change governance and release processes
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across technical/non-technical teams
Desirable technical experience (highly valued)
- Integration/adjacent tech: .NET interoperability or service wrappers
- Source control (e.g. Git, Azure DevOps, SVN) and good branching/release discipline

What success looks like in the first 90-180 days
- You'll be fully up to speed on the application landscape, standards and release process.
- You'll deliver enhancements that meet quality gates (unit tests, QA sign-off, change governance).
- You'll reduce defects through improved design consistency and proactive troubleshooting.
- You'll contribute at least one meaningful improvement to team standards, tooling or delivery process.
