We're looking for an experienced Instructional Learning Designer to join the Royal Society of Chemistry and help shape how our audiences - chemistry professionals, students and the wider scientific community - learn and grow with us. In this role, you will design and develop interactive, high-quality e learning experiences that serve our community across their entire journey with the RSC: from first encounter to professional development and beyond. You will bring instructional design expertise and a genuine curiosity about learner needs and apply those skills to everything you create-ensuring our content is not just accurate, but engaging, purposeful, and built around the people who use it. Working closely with a project team, subject matter experts, product managers, and stakeholders across the organisation, you'll take a customer centric, "outside in" approach-letting learner needs and pain points drive what we commission and how we design it. You will also play an active role in raising the standard of instructional design practice at the RSC, mentoring colleagues and contributing to a culture of continuous improvement. Although this role is contractually based at our Cambridge office, you will be able to work from home in the UK, with the expectation that you will attend the office 1-2 days per week and on an ad hoc basis. Flexibility and hybrid working arrangements are supported. Responsibilities Lead the end to end design and development of digital learning materials-from scoping and research to build, evaluation, and continuous improvement. Conduct learner research and stakeholder interviews to inform the design and development of digital instructional materials and methodology. Apply methodologies such as ADDIE and SAM to plan and execute instructional design projects. Create engaging e learning courses, job aids, performance support tools, and learning pathways using leading authoring tools. Redesign existing materials with a sharp focus on best practice and customer needs. Oversee instructional video production, ensuring scripts are followed to the agreed learning design. Collaborate with subject matter experts, product managers, and business stakeholders across the RSC to ensure accuracy and relevance of instructional materials, and to align them with business objectives. Develop evaluation and assessment processes to measure effectiveness and drive continuous improvement. Lead and mentor colleagues in instructional design practice. Manage projects from initiation to delivery, mitigating risks and maintaining ISO quality standards. Stay current with emerging technologies and trends in e learning and instructional design. Qualifications Proven experience as an Instructional Learning Designer, designing e learning or working on complex educational digital products. Strong knowledge of e learning development tools and software (e.g., Adobe Captivate, Articulate Storyline, or equivalent) to create interactive multimedia rich materials. Experience designing and developing multiple digital learning products concurrently. Experience applying pedagogical/andragogical approaches to digital learning experiences. Ability to lead design on multiple learning projects with tight deadlines. Excellent writing and editing skills, with proven ability to produce instruction and educational materials in varied contexts and tones. Strong analytical skills to review large volumes of information and make informed decisions about priorities and design approaches. Strong communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel) and comfortable learning new packages such as authoring tools. Commercial awareness and understanding of commercial impact of product decisions. Experience of matrix working and team collaboration, and securing buy in from key stakeholders. You will shape the software architecture and the fine-grained detail of configuration and implementation throughout the software development lifecycle for performance, security and maintainability of the applications we build. You will play a key role within our DevOps function, acting as a hands-on technical leader while managing a team of cross-functional engineers. This team includes back-end developers (C#/.NET, Node.js), front-end developers (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Vue.js), test automation engineers, and Site Reliability Engineers (AWS). Responsibilities Lead and develop a cross-functional software development team, including back-end, front-end, test automation, and Site Reliability Engineers. Act as a hands-on technical leader while supporting design decisions, coding, and ensuring best practices are followed. Experience with DevOps best practices, such as continuous delivery, continuous testing, infrastructure as code, etc. Understanding of cloud architecture principles with hands-on experience in AWS or similar platforms.
