Linux Automation Engineer
12 month contract - inside IR35
We are seeking an experienced Linux Automation Engineer to join a critical enterprise platform team. This is a hands-on role focused on supporting and enhancing a large-scale Linux infrastructure, maintaining existing automation frameworks, and driving improvements across production environments. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring platform stability, operational excellence, and the ongoing evolution of automation and platform engineering capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and enhance existing automation solutions developed using Perl, Python, Shell Scripting, and related technologies.
- Support and administer Linux-based production environments, ensuring high levels of availability, performance, and reliability.
- Design, develop, and optimise automation workflows to improve operational efficiency and minimise manual intervention.
- Investigate and resolve complex infrastructure, application, and network-related issues across enterprise-scale environments.
- Support CI/CD pipelines and version control processes to enable consistent and repeatable software builds and deployments.
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, and support teams to manage incidents, implement solutions, and drive continuous service improvement.
- Support business-critical database-backed applications and services, including troubleshooting and maintenance activities where required.
- Participate in technical design, architecture discussions, and platform modernisation initiatives.
- Contribute to operational best practices, documentation, and knowledge-sharing across teams.
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong Linux system administration and troubleshooting experience, particularly within RHEL or equivalent enterprise Linux environments.
- Proven Scripting and automation expertise using Perl, Python, Bash, or Korn Shell.
- Experience supporting and maintaining production applications and services within complex enterprise environments.
- Strong understanding of Git-based development workflows and CI/CD tools such as Jenkins.
- Good knowledge of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP and connectivity troubleshooting.
- Ability to work independently while engaging effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience operating within large-scale, regulated, or mission-critical environments.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues.
Desirable Skills
- Experience with enterprise storage technologies, including NetApp and SAN solutions.
- Knowledge of authentication and security technologies such as Kerberos and SPNEGO.
- Exposure to databases including PostgreSQL and SQLite.
- Familiarity with cloud technologies, containerisation platforms, and modern platform engineering practices.
- Experience supporting Legacy systems while contributing to modernisation and transformation programmes.
- Understanding of infrastructure automation and configuration management concepts.
