Your Role
We are looking to recruit an expert structural biologist with an experimental background to join the EMDB as a biocurator within the EMBL-EBI OneDep data curation team. High quality curation of new data depositions is essential for EMDB and PDB to remain the authoritative global sources of biomacromolecular structure information. The role involves annotating preliminary EMDB and PDB submissions and extracting relevant biological information.
EBI staff annotate more than a third of all PDB and EMDB depositions worldwide. The work will also involve improving the OneDep deposition system through contributing domain knowledge and analyses for the benefit of automation requirement setting and process development. Data curators also participate in developing training material and delivery of workshops and outreach activities.
Essential Qualifications
- A relevant PhD with hands on experience in the determination of protein structures using 3DEM methods, and broad knowledge of structure determination workflows.
- Demonstrable working knowledge of macromolecular structure, and ideally broad knowledge in molecular biology or biochemistry.
- Ability to work independently and as a team member within the EMDB team and the broader wwPDB OneDep teams.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with excellent command of English to communicate with depositors.
- Capable of succinct communication. Up to date on the 3DEM field and its developments.
Desirable Skills
- Knowledge of computer scripting or Python programming.
- Knowledge of building and implementing coding solutions.
- Knowledge of transforming user requirements into manageable project goals.
- Experience managing projects using industry standard software (e.g. Jira).
- Experience with software version control (e.g. Git).
- Knowledge of data engineering and data models.

Working Conditions
Hybrid working: All employees are offered hybrid working options. You will be required to work 2 days from the office in Hinxton (currently Tuesday and Thursday) and can join ad hoc in person events as required.
Contract length: 3 years (grant based).
Compensation
Grade 5 - monthly salary from £3,303 after tax, excluding pension contributions and health insurance.
Interview Process
We anticipate an initial virtual interview in August and virtual panel interview rounds to start in September. Preference is for applicants who are immediately available, with a start date of December 2026 or earlier.
