Rail Systems Engineer

A rapidly growing multidisciplinary consultancy, helping to make rail improvements happen for local communities up and down the country. Across a variety of sectors - including rail, highways, utilities and aviation have a fantastic opportunity for a Multidisciplinary Rail Systems Engineer to support the delivery of projects.

Based in Birmingham with travel to sites.

The projects mainly focus on the early stage design covering concept to preferred option. The role will require contribution to strategy, feasibility and concept studies through developing and assessing options against client objectives, cost, programme and deliverability criteria.

Working within multidisciplinary teams, the role involves coordinating and reviewing outputs across civil, structural, track, signalling, OLE, M&E and telecoms discipline to ensure a coherent, integrated design approach, ensuring that all rail systems are considered, designed, implemented and maintained in accordance with client requirements, industry standards, safety regulations and project objectives, and contributing to the successful delivery of rail projects by applying systems engineering principles.

The role will provide day to day support to projects by supporting the Senior Engineering Team to generate and provide the required technical output for the project.

• Applying the company processes from the integrated management system (IMS)
• Applying engineering processes across the project lifecycle, including requirements management, design, integration, verification, validation and acceptance
• Applying relevant standards and regulations to the work being undertaken
• Considering health, safety and welfare and record and maintain for the project, contributing to engineering safety management
• Developing and maintaining requirements, specifications, interface documentation and technical reports
• Managing technical interfaces between rail subsystems
• Supporting integration activities across signalling, communications, infrastructure, control systems and other rail disciplines as applicable
• Reviewing and assessing engineering designs to ensure compliance with project requirements, applicable standards and industry best practice
• Supporting design reviews, hazard identification workshops and technical assurance activities
• Identifying and managing technical risks and opportunities throughout the project delivery
• Liaising with clients, stakeholders, suppliers, contractors, operators and regulatory bodies
• Providing technical support and guidance to project teams and stakeholders
• Participating in client meetings, technical workshops and project reviews
• Supporting the resolution of technical issues and interface challenges

• Degree in a relevant engineering discipline (civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, systems or rail engineering)
• Be chartered or working towards chartership or professional qualification with a recognised institution
• Have a clear understanding of rail systems (civils, track, signalling, OLE, M&E, telecoms) and how they interface with each other
• Experience managing technical interfaces and multidisciplinary engineering activities
• Knowledge of rail industry standards, regulations and assurance processes including PACE
• Knowledge of rail industry roles and responsibilities with regard to engineering assurance
• Knowledge of engineering lifecycle
• Health, safety and welfare knowledge including understanding of CDM 2015 and ability to apply in project situations
• Cost awareness and appreciation
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities
• Ability to produce high quality, clear and literate technical documentation and reports

• Consultancy or client side experience
• Experience in early stage projects from strategy/concept through to preferred option
• Experience working on rail and wider infrastructure projects
• Knowledge of requirements identification and management processes
• Senior Project Manager

Salary Circa £50,000 - £58,000 per annum negotiable dependent on experience plus;
