Job Description

This is a pivotal role at the heart of Dounreay's decommissioning mission. You will provide management and leadership to highly skilled teams responsible for offsite waste disposals and transfers, waste data management systems, and waste inventory and forecasting, ensuring waste services are delivered safely, compliantly, and in direct support of programme and site objectives.

If you are motivated by complex challenges, high standards of environmental stewardship, and the opportunity to make a lasting impact on one of the UK's most significant decommissioning programmes, this role offers both scale and purpose.

What you will be doing:

You will provide strong, visible management across waste disposal, data, and inventory teams, ensuring offsite waste routes are robust, well-managed, and ready to support decommissioning delivery now and in the future. You will build and maintain effective relationships with external waste routes and regulators while ensuring waste data tools, inventories, and forecasts are accurate, trusted, and actively used to enable informed decision making.

You will drive compliant, optimised waste management from generation through to final disposal, embedding best practice, continuous improvement, and environmental optimisation. Acting as a senior technical authority, you will represent Dounreay internally and externally, manage specialist contracts, and play a central role in shaping and delivering optimised waste strategies aligned to site and national requirements. Other key deliverables are:

  • Set and maintain programme baselines, strategies, and schedules, managing dependencies, risks, and constraints to enable delivery of site waste and near term work plan strategies
  • Deliver safe and compliant offsite waste management, including external disposal routes, waste diversion, and central budget coordination
  • Ensure effective waste inventories, forecasting, and high quality data and records systems that meet regulatory and site requirements
  • Own and continuously improve waste quality management systems, providing expert advice and resolving incidents, non compliances, and improvements
  • Perform the responsibilities of authorisations relevant to post, including emergency arrangements
What will I bring:

You will bring a strong technical foundation combined with confident management, able to influence across complex stakeholder environments and lead teams through change. Your experience will enable you to balance regulatory excellence, operational delivery, and continuous improvement within a demanding, highly regulated setting.

  • Degree in Science or Engineering (or equivalent qualification supported by relevant professional experience)
  • Extensive waste management experience in an industrial or nuclear environment, including people leadership, supply chain engagement, and implementing new ways of working or disposal routes

If you require assistance at any point during the recruitment process contact at the appropriate time so we can make any necessary, reasonable adjustment.
