Job Description

Venn group is proud to partner with prestigious London based university to hire a Linux Support Engineer, this exciting opportunity to provide technical expertise across a complex and evolving infrastructure environment.

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the stability, performance, and security of critical Linux-based systems, while supporting automation, monitoring, and high-availability environments.

Salary: £43,482-£44,746

Contract type: Permanent

Working hours: Full time

Hybrid 60%

Location: Central London (Hybrid working)

Job responsibilities include:

  • Maintain high availability and performance of Linux systems across production and test environments
  • Monitor infrastructure health and respond proactively to performance alerts
  • Support planned maintenance, system updates, and disaster recovery procedures
  • Participate in the organisation's on-call rota for out-of-hours support (when required)
  • Provide third-line support and act as the final point of technical escalation
  • Work with a variety of technologies including RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu, VMware, and F5 load balancers
  • Manage web services, LAMP stack applications, Samba servers, and authentication proxies
  • Utilise tools such as Ansible, Katello, Nagios, Prometheus, and Grafana for configuration and monitoring
  • Automate routine tasks using scripts and infrastructure-as-code practices
  • Maintain clear and up-to-date technical documentation
  • Support knowledge sharing and training for first- and second-line teams

Candidate profile:

  • Strong hands-on experience in Linux system administration (RedHat, Ubuntu, etc.)
  • Proven experience supporting enterprise-level infrastructure environments
  • Familiarity with virtualisation (VMware) and configuration management tools (Ansible, Katello)
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to act as a technical escalation point
  • Experience working in structured environments, ideally within large or complex organisations
  • Comfortable collaborating with cross-functional technical teams
  • A proactive approach to professional development and keeping up with evolving technologies
