We are looking for a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Specialist to lead the LCA practices for the Research & Development function and the regions we support. This person will provide our teams with access to the data, approved tools, and approaches to enable quantified business decisions optimized for sustainability and cost.

This newly formed role will collaborate closely with product development, packaging and procurement to provide analysis of materials and processes from an environmental impact perspective. The role will also work with internal communication and sustainability teams to position and translate technical information for internal and external use.

As the LCA lead for Research and Development you will align on a standard approach that enables us to make meaningful and comparable choices across projects, categories and regions internally, then guide labeling and external reporting through a comprehensive oversight of the various certification approaches used around the globe.

Main Responsibilities:

As the Research and Development LCA expert, help interpret results and guide Research &Development teams on decisions based on solid understanding and application of LCA principles approach. Leverage your skill and experience to define and standardize a robust approach to LCA across categories and functions globally within Mondelēz International. Balance appropriate application of internal and external capability ensuring alignment with / compliance to relevant and required regulatory bodies. Establish a verified set of 'approved' external LCA service providers driving for standards methodologies and metrics, and reporting techniques. Support Research &Development function to define LCA scope of work when needed to work with service providers for dedicated in-depth LCA studies. Support all LCA needs across Research & Development sub-functions and categories. Lead the systematic development and interpretation of LCA models for raw materials, manufacturing processes and packaging to provide a baseline for the organization from which to make decisions, including use of internal/external tools available. Develop awareness and help educate Research & Development on LCA-related topics via existing sustainability Green Teams, Champions and Communities of Practice Partner with other Research & Development leaders in providing guidance at enterprise level on use of LCA tools in Eco-labeling of our products in Europe and other geographies. Develop understanding and ways of working to leverage 3rd party certifications for product environmental footprint labelling. Help us to leverage the data we have internally and that we can access externally to set up our systems and put the data in people's hands as they make project choices and decisions , helping to optimize for cost: value sustainability

More about this role

Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Education:
    • Bachelor's degree with professional experience in environmental science, engineering, or related field

OR
  • Chemical or Environmental Master's degree
  • Experience: Significant professional experience in the application of Life Cycle Assessment (professional certification ideal), including:
    • Familiarity with LCA standards, methods and metrics & packaging design guidelines
    • Understanding of raw materials and packaging supply chain (origin of materials and conversion process steps) is helpful.
    • Climate change impact reporting frameworks (e.g. GHG Protocol, SBTi, etc.)
    • Proficiency with LCA impact categories and their equivalences to translate into something tangible for non-technical stakeholders.
    • Standard LCA databases and new data collection steps to leverage existing software.
    • Proficiency in and the use of LCA software (GaBi or SimaPro preferred)
    • Extensive quantitative work, data analysis and modelling
    • Experience working in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment
  • Experience in the food & beverage industry is preferred.
  • Familiarity with regulations and industry best practice for communicating and leveraging LCA results Business to Business and Business to Customer
