Senior Software Engineer, Chem-Bio
AI Security Institute
The AI Security Institute is the world's largest and best-funded team dedicated to understanding advanced AI risks and translating that knowledge into action. We're in the heart of the UK government with direct lines to No. 10 (the Prime Minister's office), and we work with frontier developers and governments globally. We're here because governments are critical for advanced AI going well, and UK AISI is uniquely positioned to mobilise them. With our resources, unique agility and international influence, this is the best place to shape both AI development and government action. About the Team AISI's Chem Bio (CB) team conducts technical research to assess evolving AI capabilities related to science R&D and CB misuse, and the effectiveness of technical safeguards that might mitigate risks arising from those capabilities. The goal of our research is to inform critical decisions on security, opportunities, policy, and risk mitigation made by governments and AI developers. We're a close-knit, unusually interdisciplinary team-made up of machine learning researchers and engineers, software engineers, virologists and bacteriologists, behavioural research scientists, biosecurity experts, long-standing CB policy specialists and talented generalists-who work closely with other technical and policy teams across government. Role Responsibilities We are building a dedicated engineering function within the CB team - a small team that owns the shared platform, tooling, and infrastructure that our research projects depend on. This role is a senior individual contributor within that function. The successful candidate will: Design and build reliable systems - architect and deliver core platform components that enable researchers to run experiments and ship results quickly, including LLM-based agent systems, evaluation frameworks, and supporting infrastructure. Work closely with researchers - translate varied research needs across general agents, science agents, chemical and biological models and other CB workstreams into well-engineered, maintainable systems. Own and deliver significant engineering work - take responsibility for substantial technical projects and shared components, driving them from design through implementation, iteration, and maintenance. Write high-quality production code - build scalable, robust, and maintainable software, primarily in Python, with strong engineering discipline around testing, documentation, and observability. Contribute to engineering standards and practices - help improve code quality, development workflows, and shared engineering approaches within a growing engineering team embedded in a research-heavy environment. Collaborate across AISI - work with our Core Technology and engineering teams to share tooling, align on infrastructure, and avoid duplication. Support technical direction - contribute to architectural decisions, identify opportunities to strengthen shared infrastructure, and help make pragmatic technical trade-offs. Mentor others through technical leadership - support other engineers through collaboration, code review, and knowledge sharing, without formal line-management responsibility. Role Requirements We are looking for the following skills, experience and attitudes, but a successful candidate will not necessarily need to meet all these criteria. We can be flexible in shaping the role and salary to your background, expertise, and level of experience. Significant experience writing production-level Python code that is scalable, robust, and easy to maintain, with a track record of delivering substantial technical work. Strong infrastructure and platform skills - experience with cloud environments (AWS), container orchestration (Kubernetes), and job scheduling (Slurm or similar). Experience owning technical projects or major systems as a senior individual contributor. You do not need formal management experience for this role. Familiarity with the AI/ML ecosystem: OpenAI-compatible APIs, PyTorch, and the tooling around LLM-based systems. Ability to work across multiple teams, understanding varied research needs and delivering reliable engineering solutions. A sense of mission, urgency, and responsibility for success: Demonstrated ability to solve challenging problems, implement solutions efficiently and acquire any missing knowledge necessary to get the job done. Motivated to build software with direct policy impact. Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a dynamic, multidisciplinary team environment. Strong candidates may also have: Experience working in a research environment - you don't need to be a researcher, but you should be comfortable working alongside them and translating ambiguous research requirements into engineering plans. Familiarity with computational biology tools, workflows, or datasets. Experience building or maintaining internal developer platforms, shared libraries, or CI/CD systems for technical teams. Senior Full Stack Software Engineer
Neutreeno Cambridge, Cambridgeshire
About Neutreeno Climate change is the defining business challenge of our time, and we're here to solve it. Most decarbonisation solutions count emissions but do nothing to reduce them. We've changed that. We're Neutreeno, an emissions-to-performance platform, born out of the University of Cambridge's Department of Engineering. We help companies with supply chains and production processes turn emissions data into operational insight, the kind that cuts costs, sharpens decisions, and unlocks genuine competitive advantage. For operations and finance, it's margin they can measure. For sustainability teams, it's progress they can prove. Same data, two audiences, one engine. We're a fast-moving team that values EQ just as much as IQ. Autonomy, high-ownership, speed and no-ego collaboration are at our core. We seek people who care deeply and are eager to work on solving problems bigger than themselves. The Role As a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer and key member of the Neutreeno team, you'll be shipping great software, bringing strong engineering judgment, and making the team better through craft and collaboration. You'll ship across the full stack, crafting clean React UIs, building reliable Node.js and Python services, and deploying to AWS. You'll own features end-to-end alongside a small, strong engineering team, and you'll have real influence over how the product evolves. You also use AI coding tools and agentic workflows as a force multiplier, and you're actively curious about how they change what a small engineering team can achieve. This position operates on a hybrid work model with 3 days per week in our Cambridge office. Fully remote arrangements may be considered for outstanding international candidates, provided there is sufficient overlap with UK working hours. The Work You'll Do Technical Leadership Build responsive, modular UIs in React and TypeScript that make complex emissions data feel simple and intuitive. Develop and maintain backend services in Node.js, designing clean APIs and working with cloud-native AWS infrastructure. Ship features end-to-end: from picking up a product brief to deploying to production via our CI/CD pipelines. Contribute to the technical direction of Neutreeno, helping inform architectural decisions that balance speed, quality, and long-term scalability. Champion AI-native development practices and agentic workflows across your own work and actively share that thinking with the wider team. Team and Product Partner closely with the Neutreeno team to translate product ambitions into well-scoped, well-sequenced engineering work. Feed into the engineering roadmap, providing strong technical input on prioritisation, feature velocity, and technical health. Contribute to hiring decisions and help shape an engineering culture that helps Neutreeno scale. Communicate clearly about technical decisions and progress with product, design, and the wider team. The Minimum Qualifications You'll Need 7 or more years of professional software engineering experience. A strong individual contributor deeply motivated to stay hands on in the codebase, with a collaborative approach to sharing knowledge and raising quality across the team. Deep proficiency across the full stack, including React and TypeScript on the front end and Node.js on the back end. Solid experience with AWS infrastructure and cloud-native deployment. A proven track record of shipping high-quality software at pace. Real, daily use of AI coding tools and agentic development workflows as a core part of how you work. Strong communication and the ability to build trust quickly across engineering, product, and leadership. Preferred Qualifications Experience at an early stage startup as a senior individual contributor. Familiarity with GraphQL, Terraform, or CI/CD pipeline design. Experience integrating LLMs or building AI powered product features. Exposure to climate, sustainability, or deep tech domains. Degree in Computer Science or a related field (not required, track record speaks louder). What We Offer Compensations & Benefits: Competitive pay dependent on your skills, qualifications and experience. Year end performance bonus. 25 days annual leave. Competitive stock option plan. We want you to think and benefit like an owner as the company grows. Company pension with NEST. Leading private health insurance with WPA (the only Which? Recommended Provider for Private Medical Insurance). Cycle to work scheme. Work Environment: A hybrid work model that fosters both teamwork and individual flexibility. Remote working allowance (2 weeks per year). Work from Neutreeno HQ at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, recognised by the FT as one of Europe's leading startup hubs. Great on site amenities (unlimited free coffee, monthly events with global sustainability leaders). Culture & Growth: A flat, fast growing team (200%+ YoY growth) from diverse backgrounds that recently closed a $5M seed round. An open-minded culture with a flat hierarchy and everyone vectoring in the same direction and where ideas and ownership matter. The chance to work alongside world class climate scientists and engineers on one of the most important problems of our time. How to Apply If you're a senior engineer who loves great code, thrives in a fast moving environment, and has a genuine point of view on how AI tooling fits into modern development, we want to hear from you. Founding Software Engineer
Substrate Bio
The opportunity Substrate is building a network of fully autonomous wet labs, cloud-based data production facilities for AI biology, integrated with foundation models to become the critical infrastructure layer for AI-driven biological discovery. Our first node opens in King's Cross, London, with several integrated workcells and two scientific verticals online by mid-2027. Our customers range from foundation model labs to global pharma. We are hiring a founding software engineer to lead the team that builds Substrate's operational software, the system that turns scientific intent into executed lab work, captures every run as structured data, and routes that data back to model training, customer pipelines, and Substrate's own data factory. This is a player coach role. You will write the first production code for the orchestrator, the customer interface, and the resource management layer, and you will recruit and lead the engineers who come after. About Substrate Substrate is spinning out of Automata, the UK lab automation company that has built the workcell platform our labs run on. Our four co-founders are Mostafa ElSayed (CEO and founder of Automata), Oli Hoy (formerly VP Customer Experience at Automata), Alexey Morgunov (AI Scientist co-founder, leading the Intelligence Software product), and a Founding Biology Lead joining shortly. We are aiming to have ramped up to 32 people by the end of Q1 2027. We are funded in parallel by a combination of venture funding and government grants. We are not a cloud lab, and we are not a CRO. We are an autonomous lab platform with closed-loop integration available as one operating mode for foundation model partners. The role You will own the operational software product end to end. The product has five surfaces. The loop orchestrator is the heart of it: two agentic translation layers that convert scientific intent (model output, natural language, or structured input) into executable, automated workflows, and convert workflow outputs and run metadata back into destination-specific formats for delivery to foundation models, LIMS, customer data lakes, and ELNs. Resource management will track consumables, reagents, and labware, and maintain a live representation of the physical lab so that physical inputs can be mapped onto workflow outputs. The customer interface is API-first with a web front end. The workflow orchestrator sits above Automata's LINQ scheduler and manages capacity allocation across customers, verticals, and device groups. The pricing and forecast engine calculates predicted and actual platform inputs and translates them into customer cost. You will write the first production code, set the architecture, set the engineering culture, and grow the team. You will have the opportunity to build a team and help set the culture within the company. You will work closely with Alexey on the boundary between our operational software and our intelligence software (the AI Scientist and AI Assays products), and with the founding biology team on the orchestrator behaviour on the lab side. What you will do in your first twelve months PHASE 0: NOW TO AUG 2026 Land in the team. Lock the architecture for the orchestrator and the customer interface. Decide the build vs buy boundary against LINQ. Ship the first end to end thin slice: a simple workflow submitted via the customer API, executable on a workcell, with run metadata captured and returned. Set the engineering culture: code review, deployment, on call, observability. Pick the languages, frameworks, and tooling we will live with. PHASE 1: SEP TO DEC 2026 Stand up the resource management and digital twin services. Wire them into the protein engineering workflows being onboarded by the founding biology team. Hire the first software engineer alongside you. Define the role, run the process, close the offer. Ship the first version of the pricing and forecast engine. Connect it to the customer interface so that customers see predicted cost before they submit. PHASE 2: JAN TO MAR 2027 Ramp up hiring. Move from solo building to leading a larger team. Bring the workflow orchestrator above LINQ into production. Manage capacity allocation across the protein engineering vertical and the early functional genomics work. Harden the loop orchestrator for the closed-loop foundation model partners coming online from mid-2027. Who you are You are an experienced software engineer who has shipped production systems at depth. You have led a small team or are ready to. You write good code at speed, you have strong opinions about architecture, and you have learned (often the hard way) when to defer those opinions. You have worked at the boundary where software meets physical reality (lab automation, robotics, manufacturing, logistics, scientific instruments, energy) and you understand that the interesting failure modes live there. You are excited by the prospect of writing the first lines of code for a system that will run a real lab. You are pragmatic about agentic systems and foundation models; you have used them in production rather than read about them in posts. You want a player coach role specifically. You enjoy interviewing, hiring, mentoring, and building culture, and you do not want to be only an individual contributor or only a manager. You care deeply about building a world class team. You are comfortable with early stage ambiguity, with making decisions on partial information, and with revisiting them when better information arrives. MUST HAVE Five or more years of professional software engineering experience, with at least one leading or co-leading a small team. Production experience with backend systems, distributed services, and either workflow orchestration or scheduling systems. Strong working comfort with at least Python, and willingness to learn the necessary tools. Track record of designing APIs that other engineers have actually used. Direct experience of the software-to-hardware boundary, in lab automation, robotics, manufacturing, or an analogous domain. NICE TO HAVE Experience of an early-stage founding-engineer role at a venture-backed company. Familiarity with foundation model APIs, agentic patterns, and the practical realities of putting them in production. Background in or near scientific computing, bioinformatics, or LIMS / ELN systems. Why this is unusual Most software engineering roles at venture-backed companies are either a pure software product or a thin software layer on top of someone else's infrastructure. This is neither. You will be writing the software that decides what physical experiments run, when, on which workcell, with which reagents, for which customer, and you will be doing that inside a wet lab business with biology and engineering colleagues at the same table. Operational software is also one of three product surfaces being built simultaneously. Alexey is leading the efforts on intelligence software (the AI Scientist and AI Assays products). The biology team is building the assay portfolio. Your work has to integrate cleanly with both, and you will spend real time at the boundary. Some engineers find this energising; some find it distracting. Worth knowing in advance which one you are. Compensation and equity We pay competitively against the London market for senior software engineers at venture-backed companies, calibrated to seniority and to the specific scope of this role. We will discuss numbers with serious candidates after first conversations. Equity is meaningful, with vesting on the standard four-year schedule and a one-year cliff. We can talk through the philosophy and the maths in detail when we meet. How we work Working pattern is open. We will design around the strongest candidate, with a bias towards willingness to spend some in-person time at our King's Cross site, particularly during the early phases while the team is forming and the architecture is being set. Most of the founding team are in the office most days. 30 days annual leave. A learning budget you can use for conferences, courses, books, and time. The founding team operates on a weekly cadence with a Monday planning meeting and a Friday close, and a quarterly offsite. We are direct with each other, we write things down, and we expect to be challenged. The team you will join You will report to Oli Hoy, co-founder, who leads our autonomous lab buildout and is also responsible for the broader operations of the company. You will work most closely with Alexey Morgunov on the intelligence software boundary, and with the founding biology team on the orchestrator behaviour at the lab side. How to apply Apply via Ashby with whatever you think shows your work best: a CV, a short email, links to GitHub or to systems you have built, a piece of writing you are proud of. We read everything that comes in. Our process is four stages. An initial conversation with Oli to understand what you want from the role and what we want from it. Two technical sessions with our external technical advisor: an architecture deep-dive on how you would build the operational software, and a session on how you would build and lead the engineering team. Finally, an in-person founder-team session covering scope, terms, and any final questions. We aim to move fast on candidates we are excited about; expect roughly two to three weeks end to end. If you are not sure whether you are a fit, send a note anyway. The most useful conversations we have had so far have been with people who were not sure. Backend Engineer (Python)
Skin + Me
Description London, UK Hybrid (3 days in our Paddington HQ: Mon, Tue, Fri) Stack: Python, Flask, SQLAlchemy, MySQL, AWS (React on the frontend) In 2018 we set out to solve a problem millions of people faced: not just struggling with their skin, but struggling to navigate skincare at all. We combined dermatology, pharmacy and technology into something simpler and genuinely personalised, and proved expert-led care could reach people who'd never had access to it. Today, +Me is the company behind Skin + Me, Hair + Me and Renew + Me , with more on the horizon. We're not building a single brand. We're building a category. We've delivered millions of treatments, we're profitable and growing fast, and we're expanding the engineering team to match. What you'll build You ll join the team behind our core commerce and clinical journey: the ecom stack, consultation engine, patient and prescription systems, and order generation. This is where customers discover us, complete a clinical consultation, subscribe, and receive their personalised treatment, at real consumer scale. On our Python and React stack, that's the storefront behind Skin + Me and Hair + Me, our flagship brands serving customers at scale. We're hiring a Backend Engineer to go deep on the server side of this system in our Python / Flask stack: the APIs, data models and services behind consultations, prescriptions and orders. You'll learn fast alongside experienced engineers who'll back your growth, and you'll be comfortable making frontend (React) changes when a feature needs it, but backend is your craft. What you'll do Build the services behind the journey: APIs, data models and services powering consultations, prescriptions and order generation, with support from senior engineers. Ship and own: take backend features from ticket to production and keep them fast, correct and healthy once they're live. Write code others build on: clean, well-tested, and clear enough for the next person to pick up. What we're looking for Backend depth: solid, recent, hands-on experience building backend services and APIs in Python (Flask). A non-trivial piece of work you can walk us through and explain well. Good fundamentals: sound data modelling (SQLAlchemy/Alembic), sensible API design, and an instinct for testing. Care where it counts: you treat correctness as a feature, because this code generates real prescriptions and orders. Enough frontend to be useful: comfortable making React changes when a feature needs it (frontend won't be your main focus). The stack: Python and Flask; relational databases (MySQL ideal); some exposure to AWS/Docker is a plus. Clear communication: much of our work is written (PRs, docs), so explaining a decision crisply matters. Roughly 3-6 years building software in production. We read for depth in your area, not years. How we work We're a small, experienced engineering team working closely with product, clinical and operations. We care about craft: clean code, honest reviews, and owning what you ship through to production. And because our software turns a clinical consultation into a real prescription and a treatment someone receives, correctness and care aren't optional here. They're the job. How we use AI Agentic tools like Claude Code and Codex are a standard part of how we work, and we're leaning into them hard: we automate the routine so we can spend our energy on the harder problems. You'll need to be comfortable working this way, and real skill with these tools is a genuine advantage we value. But it's a multiplier on strong engineering judgement, not a substitute for it, and never a prerequisite. If it's newer to you and you're keen to grow, we'll back you. Compensation & benefits We pay competitive base salaries and back them with meaningful equity, so your upside grows with the company you're helping build. Equity: a meaningful stake in a profitable, Series B-backed business that's growing fast, with flexibility on your cash/equity mix. Time off: 25 days holiday plus bank holidays. Hybrid & flexible: three days together in Paddington (Mon, Tue, Fri), remote Wed/Thu, core hours 10-4 with flexibility around them. Fuelled: free breakfast and lunch on office days, plus snacks and drinks. Growth: a £500 annual personal development budget. Family & health: healthcare cash plan, cycle-to-work, and a workplace nursery scheme (save tax/NI on childcare). The extras: a dog-friendly HQ (two resident pups), an active Culture Club, and heavily discounted products for you and 10 friends & family. How we hire We keep it short and respect your time: Intro call with our engineers (25-30 mins), including a short system-design chat. A conversation with our Director of Software Engineering (30 mins). A practical take-home task, in your own time. Onsite at our Paddington HQ to review your task and meet the team. Great engineers come from all kinds of backgrounds. If this resonates, even if you don't tick every box, we'd love to hear from you. Sound like you? We'd love to hear from you.

Citi
Full-Stack Senior Software Engineer, GenAI Data Products and Platform (VP)
Citi
The Opportunity This is your chance to build the foundational systems for 'Citi Assist', a Generative AI assistant that will reach every Citi employee globally. You'll join us on the ground floor, becoming a core builder on a high-visibility platform that sets the standard for how a global bank adopts this technology safely and at scale. Here's what makes this role unique: we know that data is the key to building a successful, safe, and scalable generative AI assistant. The difference between a good AI product and a great one isn't just the model-it's the testing, evaluation, and feedback loops that make it better every day. As a data-focused full-stack engineer, you'll help us craft the tools and systems that let us understand how Assist is performing, where it's succeeding, and where it needs to improve. You'll work across the stack, building everything from intuitive dashboards that surface insights to robust backend pipelines that process evaluation data at scale. What You'll Do Build the tools that make Assist great. You'll design and build the testing, evaluation, and feedback systems that help us understand how our AI assistant is performing in the real world. This means creating tools for both our team and our users to provide feedback, analyse interactions, and measure quality. Work with data across the full stack. You'll build data pipelines that collect and process evaluation metrics, create visualisations that surface insights to the team, and design APIs that power our testing infrastructure. You'll be equally comfortable writing SQL queries as you are building React components. Own your features end to end. You'll take responsibility from conception to production. That means understanding the problem we're trying to solve, designing the right solution, building it, and measuring whether it's working. You'll drive your work forward with autonomy while keeping the team aligned. Build with safety and quality in mind. For us, building safe, sound, and compliant systems is non negotiable. You'll help us establish the data practices and evaluation frameworks that ensure Assist meets our high standards for quality, safety, and regulatory compliance. Set the technical direction. As a VP level engineer, we expect you to influence how we approach problems. You'll mentor other engineers, contribute to architectural decisions, and help establish best practices for how we work with data across the platform. Be a great teammate. We expect you to be a leader in our engineering culture. That means offering thoughtful code reviews, unblocking your peers, sharing what you learn, and helping raise the bar for the whole team. We succeed together. What We're Looking For We know that people from underrepresented groups are less likely to apply if they don't meet 100% of the criteria. If you're excited about this role but your experience doesn't align perfectly with every qualification, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles. Strong experience building and deploying production applications across the full stack Proficiency in multiple languages, including Python and TypeScript/JavaScript (experience with Go or Java is a plus) Deep experience working with data-whether that's building data pipelines, designing analytics systems, or creating data driven products Experience building user facing features with modern frontend frameworks like React, Vue, or Angular Strong SQL skills and experience with relational databases like Postgres Experience building backend services and APIs that handle data at scale Comfort with containerised environments and cloud infrastructure (we use OpenShift/Kubernetes) Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines, testing frameworks, and automation Experience with data visualisation tools and techniques What Matters Most to Us A data driven mindset. You believe that good data and rigorous evaluation are essential to building great products. You know how to instrument systems to collect the right data and how to turn that data into actionable insights. A solutions first approach. You find the best path to solve the problem, whether that's building new infrastructure, leveraging existing tools, or changing how we think about the problem entirely. You're pragmatic about trade offs. Technical leadership. You have strong opinions, loosely held. You can articulate your technical vision and bring others along with you, but you're also open to being wrong and learning from your peers. A focus on impact. You understand that our goal is to deliver value to users and make Assist better every day. You know when to move fast and when to invest in building things properly. Clear communication and ownership. You take initiative, communicate proactively, and take responsibility for outcomes. You don't wait for permission, but you keep stakeholders informed. A collaborative spirit. You thrive in team environments where you can learn from others and help them grow. You see mentoring and knowledge sharing as part of your role. One example is our Advanced Risk team, who were set up to challenge conventional wisdom about risk management for sports betting operators.
