About Scrumconnect Consulting Scrumconnect Consulting is a multi-award-winning digital consultancy, recognised for delivering impactful and innovative technology solutions across UK government departments. Our work has positively influenced the lives of over 40 million UK citizens. We are passionate about user-centred design, agile delivery, and building digital services that make a real difference - and we're now scaling that expertise into large, high-stakes AI adoption programmes across the public sector. Overview We're looking for a Lead AI Engineer to be the hands-on technical builder at the core of a large-scale AI Operating Model programme for a central government department. Where the Lead Technical Architect sets direction, you turn it into working, production-grade systems - semantic search, RAG pipelines, and broader generative AI capability - integrated into complex Legacy and multi-cloud environments handling high-volume, sensitive public sector data. You'll work inside a collaborative "Rainbow Team" alongside civil servants and the wider delivery team, staying close to the code while also mentoring engineers and helping build the internal capability the department needs to eventually run these systems without long-term reliance on external suppliers. Key Responsibilities Hands-On Build & Delivery Design, build, and ship production AI components - RAG pipelines, retrieval and embedding infrastructure, orchestration logic, and integration layers - writing high-quality, tested, maintainable code and staying close to implementation rather than delegating it away. Technical Leadership Within the Squad Lead the engineering practice within your delivery team: set coding standards, review designs and pull requests, unblock technically complex problems, and mentor other engineers day to day. Responsible AI in Practice Implement the guardrails the Architect designs - bias mitigation checks, evaluation harnesses, human-in-the-loop review points - so that Responsible AI principles (ATRS alignment, NCSC "Secure by Design, " meaningful human control) are enforced in the running system, not just on paper. Reliability, Security & Observability Build AI services to be secure-by-default and observable in production: logging, monitoring, alerting, and rollback paths appropriate for sensitive public-sector data and high-availability requirements. Knowledge Transfer & Capability Uplift Work within the OKUA (Ownership, Knowledge, Understanding, Awareness) framework and "Docs-as-Code" practices to pair with and upskill internal government engineers, so capability genuinely transfers rather than staying locked in the consultancy team. Efficient, Sustainable Engineering Favour low-modality, resource-efficient designs where they meet the need - right-sizing models and infrastructure rather than defaulting to the largest/most expensive option - in line with the programme's Green AI and Net Zero commitments. Required Skills & Experience Loosely mapped to the Government Digital and Data (DDaT) framework, at Lead Engineer level: - Coding and Scripting (Expert) - writing production-grade, well-tested code; setting standards for others; comfortable owning components end-to-end. - Systems Design (Practitioner) - designing components that integrate cleanly into a wider, architect-defined system; understanding trade-offs across the stack. - Data Engineering (Practitioner) - building reliable pipelines to ingest, clean, and prepare data (including unstructured/Legacy sources) for AI consumption. - DevOps/Continuous Delivery (Practitioner) - CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, and automated deployment for AI workloads specifically (not just conventional web services). - Testing & Evaluation (Practitioner) - beyond conventional unit/integration testing, building evaluation harnesses for AI system quality: retrieval accuracy, hallucination rate, bias/fairness checks. - Problem Solving (Practitioner) - diagnosing and resolving complex, ambiguous technical issues under production pressure. - Agile Working (Practitioner) - delivering iteratively within a blended, multidisciplinary team including civil servants. Given the scale of this programme, direct hands-on depth across the AI engineering stack is essential: - Strong general-purpose programming (most commonly Python) applied to AI/ML systems - Semantic search, vector/embedding infrastructure, and RAG pipeline construction - LLM orchestration and agentic frameworks (eg LangChain/LlamaIndex-style tooling, multi-agent patterns) - Prompt engineering and systematic evaluation/guardrail tooling (hallucination detection, safety testing) - LLMOps/MLOps - model versioning, deployment, monitoring, and rollback for AI services in production - Cloud-native engineering across major providers (AWS, Azure, or GCP), including their AI/ML tooling - Containerisation and infrastructure-as-code for repeatable, auditable deployments - Secure-by-design engineering appropriate to sensitive public-sector data Desirable Experience - AWS/Azure/GCP certifications (associate or professional level) - Prior delivery of AI or digital services within UK central government or wider public sector - Experience fine-tuning or adapting open-source/foundation models for a specific domain - Open-source contributions or active engagement in AI/ML engineering communities - Experience designing for sustainability/Green IT commitments - The technological capabilities can span a wide range of AI and automation tools, including Virtual Assistants, Robotic Process Automation (RPA), Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Generative AI, Frontier LLMs, and Predictive AI. A strong candidate would have experience/exposure to nuances of these tools/technologies. Location and Working Pattern Hybrid, based from Newcastle upon Tyne, with on-site attendance required for workshops, knowledge-transfer sessions, and onboarding. All production system and data access must be performed solely from within the UK. How We Work Our values: - Collaboration - we are stronger as a team than as individuals; we tackle problems and celebrate wins together. - Create Value Early - we find the quickest route from idea to product, because our clients rely on us to do what's best. - Integrity - teamwork requires trust; we can always be relied upon to uphold the highest standards. - Commitment - no matter what, no matter how, we give our 100% to keeping our promises and achieving our goals. - Diversity and Inclusion - we believe diversity drives innovation and better outcomes, and we're committed to an inclusive environment where every individual is valued, respected, and supported. We welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds, including women, people with disabilities, and diverse communities, as well as those seeking flexible working arrangements. As a Disability Confident Level 1 employer, we provide reasonable adjustments throughout recruitment and employment to ensure equal opportunity for all. How to Apply Please submit your CV. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview. This role requires BPSS (Baseline Personnel Security Standard) clearance - please flag in your application if you already hold clearance.

Engine by Starling engineers are excited about helping us deliver new features, regardless of what their primary tech stack may be. We are looking for engineers at all levels to join the team. We value people being engaged and caring about customers, caring about the code they write and the contribution they can make to banking around the world. It is highly modular and we use MVVM-C architecture to maximise code reusability and testing. We also value simplicity over complexity, fewer moving parts means fewer faults and easier comprehension. Some of the well known frameworks and tools we use: RxSwift - as our reactive programming framework; SnapKit - as our auto layout DSL, though we have an in-house framework built on top of SnapKit which allows us to write declarative, SwiftUI like layout code for UIKit. Realm - as the application main persistence layer; Sourcery and SwiftGen - for various code generation tasks. SwiftFormat, SwiftLint and Danger - to enforce high code quality standards. Etc. We also built in-house tools and frameworks as developer productivity and automation is paramount to us. We are looking for iOS engineers to work on these apps who: Want to work on a feature rich mobile app with millions of customers; Can produce robust, well tested code that will give our customers the reliability that they need; Care about the product, the user experience and the design; Think (like us) that a small number of empowered developers is the right way to deliver software; Our application is built with UIKit, knowing its concepts and components is a must. We use RxSwift in our project, experience with reactive programming will be a plus but is not required. Interview process Interviewing is a two way process and we want you to have the time and opportunity to get to know us, as much as we are getting to know you! Our interviews are conversational and we want to get the best from you, so come with questions and be curious. In general you can expect the below, following a chat with one of our Talent Team: First interview: 45 minutes Take home technical test (no time limit) Technical face to face: 1.5 hours Final Interview: 45 minutes Benefits 33 days holiday (including public holidays, which you can take when it works best for you) An extra day's holiday for your birthday Annual leave is increased with length of service, and you can choose to buy or sell up to five extra days off 16 hours paid volunteering time a year Salary sacrifice, company enhanced pension scheme Life insurance at 4x your salary & group income protection Private Medical Insurance with VitalityHealth including mental health support and cancer care. Forget that! While we can't accommodate every flexible working request, we're always open to discussion. So, if you're excited about working with us, but aren't sure if you're 100% there yet, get in touch anyway. We're on a mission to radically reshape banking - and that starts with our brilliant team. Whatever came before, we're proud to bring together people of all backgrounds and experiences who love working together to solve problems. Our technologists are at the very heart of Starling and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment that is all about building things, creating new stuff, and disruptive technology that keeps us on the cutting edge of fintech. We operate a flat structure to empower you to make decisions regardless of what your primary responsibilities may be, innovation and collaboration will be at the core of everything you do. Help is never far away in our open culture, you will find support in your team and from across the business, we are in this together! Our purpose is underpinned by five Starling values: Listen, Keep It Simple, Do The Right Thing, Own It, and Aim For Greatness. Hybrid Working We have a Hybrid approach to working here at Starling - our preference is that you're located within a commutable distance of one of our offices so that we're able to interact and collaborate in person. In Technology, we're asking that you attend the office a minimum of 1 day per week. Our Engineering Environment Starling engineers are excited about helping us deliver new features, regardless of what their primary tech stack may be. Hear from the team in our latest blogs or our case studies with Women in Tech . We are looking for engineers at all levels to join the team. We value people being engaged and caring about customers, caring about the code they write and the contribution they make to Starling. People with a broad ability to apply themselves to a multitude of problems and challenges, who can work across teams do great things here at Starling, to continue changing banking for good. We have built our entire banking platform in house and mostly in Java. We are looking for people who want to work on building the tooling that is used by our engineers on a daily basis. Our mobile engineers work in cross-functional feature teams arranged across broader engineering groups, and as an Android engineer you'll be working in at least one of such teams. You are empowered to make the decisions necessary for the platform and to provide insight to the team leads on such projects. You'll also be working closely with other Android engineers with a variety of experience levels and interests, helping us improve and develop our Android app, CI automations and tooling. You'll be committing, reviewing and shipping new code right from the first week! Requirements As an Android engineer, you'll report to and catch-up regularly with a mobile lead engineer who will support you on your journey in Starling. We have a strong collaborative and open culture here so you'll find support outside your team too. As a fully digital bank, we are looking for engineers that are able to understand and prioritise security when implementing new features, fixing bugs or making technical improvements, across all the layers. Our team is designing, building and releasing new screens every day, for this reason we are interested in people with a particular focus on Accessibility along with writing clean and maintainable code. The way to thrive and shine within Starling is to be a self-driven individual and be able to take full ownership of everything around you: From building the code, shipping and maintaining it, to sharing knowledge with your colleagues and making sure all processes are efficient and productive to deliver the best possible results for our customers. Our aim is to deliver stable, resilient and high quality code, that is why testing is another key quality we look for when expanding our team. We use Espresso to write our UI/E2E Test and JUnit to write our Unit Tests across all layers of the application, as well as manually test all features before they go into production. We also work closely with QA engineers to ensure we have an additional level of testing when working on complex feature delivery. The Android world In the Starling Android application we are proud to be working with some of the latest technologies in the industry. When adopting new technologies we always consider as a team whether it's the best choice for our product and our users. Our codebase is written entirely in Kotlin. We use MVVM to structure our presentation layer and Jetpack Compose with Material 3 for our UI, alongside a legacy of View/XML-based screens that we are progressively migrating. We use Kotlin Coroutines and Flow throughout the application stack for handling asynchronous operations, with RxJava retained in older parts of the codebase. We are transitioning from Dagger 2 to Hilt as our dependency injection framework. Realm is our primary choice for persistence, with an ongoing migration to Room. We want our app to look great for the Android platform and have worked closely with our designers to set up a component library and have themed our app accordingly. Feature parity is important to us so Android and iOS apps are often built alongside each other. We release app updates at least once a week, and the role of release manager is rotated equally throughout the Android team. We've worked to automate as much of the release as we can, with our own internal tooling allowing us to standardise our release steps from uploading to the app stores to receiving approvals for safer rollouts. As a team we meet together every week to talk through pain points and potential improvements we'll like to make to the project. We regularly meet in real life to attend conferences and meet-ups together too! Interview process Interviewing is a two way process and we want you to have the time and opportunity to get to know us, as much as we are getting to know you! Our interviews are conversational and we want to get the best from you, so come with questions and be curious. In general you can expect the below, following a chat with one of our Talent Team: Initial interview with an engineer Take home tech test Live coding Tech interview Final interview Benefits 25 days holiday (plus take your public holiday allowance whenever works best for you) An extra day's holiday for your birthday Annual leave is increased with length of service, and you can choose to buy or sell up to five extra days off 16 hours paid volunteering time a year Salary sacrifice, company enhanced pension scheme Life insurance at 4x your salary & group income protection Private Medical Insurance with VitalityHealth including mental health support and cancer care. Description Starling is the UK's first and leading digital bank on a mission to fix banking! We built a new kind of bank because we knew technology had the power to help people save, spend and manage their money in a new and transformative way. We're a fully licensed UK bank with the culture and spirit of a fast-moving, disruptive tech company. We're a bank, but better: fairer, easier to use and designed to demystify money for everyone. We employ more than 3,000 people across our London, Southampton, Cardiff and Manchester offices. The way to thrive and shine within Starling is to be a self-driven individual and be able to take full ownership of everything around you: From building things, designing, discovering, to sharing knowledge with your colleagues and making sure all processes are efficient and productive to deliver the best possible results for our customers. Our application is in the top chart of finance apps in the UK, with over 300K ratings and an average rating of 4.9. Our iOS application is entirely written in Swift. The way to thrive and shine within Starling is to be a self-driven individual and be able to take full ownership of everything around you: From building the code, shipping and maintaining it, to sharing knowledge with your colleagues and making sure all processes are efficient and productive to deliver the best possible results for our customers. Our application is in the top chart of finance apps in the UK, with over 300K ratings and an average rating of 4.9. Our iOS application is entirely written in Swift. In general you can expect the below, following a chat with one of our Talent Team: Initial phone call: 45 minutes Take home technical test (no time limit) Technical face to face: 1.5 hours Final Interview: 45 minutes Benefits 25 days holiday (plus take your public holiday allowance whenever works best for you) An extra day's holiday for your birthday Annual leave is increased with length of service, and you can choose to buy or sell up to five extra days off 16 hours paid volunteering time a year Salary sacrifice, company enhanced pension scheme Life insurance at 4x your salary & group income protection Private Medical Insurance with VitalityHealth including mental health support and cancer care.
