We're passionate about driving innovation and redefining the future of delivery. Role Overview We are looking for a Lead Engineer to take ownership of one of the company's highest impact technical domains: the planning pipeline that powers supply demand matching, parcel distribution, and routing optimisation. As part of the company's Routing Squad, you'll lead the team tackling some of the most complex and intellectually demanding problems in computer science - building systems that decide how parcels move through the city efficiently, reliably, and at scale. This is a rare opportunity to combine deep engineering expertise, optimisation thinking, and real world domain understanding to shape a core strategic advantage for the company. You'll own the technical direction of the squad, set a high bar for engineering quality, and lead a team of engineers working closely with data scientists, analysts, product, and operations. Your work will have a direct and visible impact: better routing, stronger planning capabilities, more efficient operations, and a delivery network you can see improving in the city around you. What You'll be Doing Lead the Routing Squad across technical strategy, delivery, team leadership, and execution of squad goals. Own the technical direction for systems supporting routing optimisation, supply demand matching, parcel distribution, forecasting, and planning. Translate business priorities and operational needs into clear technical strategy, measurable outcomes, and pragmatic execution plans. Guide architecture and system design for scalable, reliable, production grade optimisation and planning systems. Work closely with optimisation engineers, backend engineers, data scientists, analysts, product, and operational stakeholders to turn complex problems into shipped solutions. Lead the exploration and evaluation of new approaches across routing, scheduling, optimisation, forecasting, and distributed systems. Set and uphold a high engineering bar through technical reviews, architectural guidance, mentoring, and accountability for maintainable software. Manage, coach, and develop engineers in the squad, including hiring, performance management, development planning, and resourcing. Foster a culture of curiosity, ownership, high performance, and continuous learning within the team. What We're Looking For 5+ years of software engineering experience, including backend or distributed systems development. Experience leading engineers, either as a people manager or as a senior technical leader with meaningful ownership over team delivery. Proven ability to translate complex, ambiguous business or operational problems into robust technical solutions. Strong system design and architectural skills in distributed, production grade environments. An appetite for hard optimisation problems - especially routing, scheduling, forecasting, supply demand matching, or other constraint heavy domains. Strong analytical thinking and the ability to combine technical depth with practical judgement. A track record of setting high engineering standards and helping teams consistently meet them. Experience working cross functionally with product, operations, data scientists, analysts, and senior leadership. Strong ownership mindset: you care about the strategy, the system, the team, and the real world outcome. Nice to have: Experience with routing, scheduling, optimisation, forecasting, logistics, mobility, or marketplace systems. Experience productionising algorithms, solvers, models, or data heavy decision systems. Familiarity with optimisation techniques such as linear/integer programming, constraint programming, heuristics, or solver based approaches. Experience working in a fast scaling operational environment where software has a direct physical world impact. No matter how hard it gets or whatever stands in our way, we are relentless in our pursuit of excellence. We Are Curious - We never settle, constantly challenge convention and are never afraid to ask why. We believe there is always more to learn, always a better way and that we're always only just getting started. We never fight the urge to be inquisitive, to understand the world around us and to explore where others might not. We Are Resourceful - Our planet's resources are scarce and our future depends on our ability to use them wisely. Waste is the enemy. We strive to do more with less, be more efficient and make the most of what we have. Technical Solutions Architect
Zippd Manchester, Lancashire
Company: Zippd Location: Manchester City Centre, UK (100% Onsite) Job Type: Full-time Visa Status: No sponsorships available (Must have the right to work in the UK) 1. The Role Overview Zippd is a fast-moving, technology-first logistics platform. We are building the routing engines, warehouse management systems (WMS), and APIs that power the next generation of urban delivery. We are looking for a hands on Technical Solutions Architect to act as the critical bridge between our operations, our clients, our engineering team, and our wider business. You will own the technical design of new features end to end - from gathering requirements with non technical stakeholders, through architecting the right solution against our existing platform, all the way to presenting it back to both the engineering team and senior leadership for sign off. This is not a pure documentation role. You will be expected to have a programmer's instinct, an architect's eye for trade offs, and a consultant's ability to communicate. You'll also spend around 20% of your time acting as the technical face of Zippd, supporting our retail partners as they integrate into our API ecosystem. Please Note: This is a strictly 100% onsite role based in our Manchester office. 2. Core Responsibilities Technical Solution Architecture & Technical Design (45%) Translate business and operational requirements into robust, scalable technical solutions that fit cleanly into our existing platform. Design microservice architectures, API contracts, database schemas, and integration patterns that align with our engineering principles. Make pragmatic build vs buy vs integrate decisions, considering cost, time, and long term maintainability. Produce high quality sequence diagrams, Entity Relationship Diagrams (ERDs), system context diagrams, and API data flow charts. Write air tight technical specifications in Confluence so our engineering team (Laravel / MySQL / OSRM / AWS) knows exactly what to build without ambiguity. Stakeholder Engagement & Requirements Gathering (25%) Run requirements sessions with non technical stakeholders - operations managers, commercial teams, the CEO, and the CTO. Convert ambiguous business problems into clearly scoped technical solutions. Present proposed solutions back to both the engineering team and senior leadership, defending the design and adapting based on feedback. Act as the trusted technical voice in the room when business and engineering disagree. Engineering Support & Live Issue Triage (10%) Provide ongoing support to the engineering team throughout build - clarifying intent, answering questions, and unblocking decisions. Act as second line technical support for complex production issues, working alongside engineering to diagnose and resolve. Client Integration Support (20%) Act as the technical point of contact for external retailers and partners onboarding onto the Zippd platform. Support clients in understanding and consuming our REST APIs and webhooks. Troubleshoot integration issues, test API payloads, and ensure a smooth technical handover before clients go into live production. 3. Required Technical Background This role is for someone with real engineering DNA- not a pure business analyst with diagramming skills. You must bring: Programming background: A previous career as a developer (Laravel/PHP, Python, Node.js, Go, or similar). You don't need to write production code daily here, but you must be able to read a pull request, sketch a working algorithm on a whiteboard, and have an opinion on code quality. Microservice architecture experience: Hands on experience designing or working in microservice ecosystems - service boundaries, inter service communication, event driven patterns, queue systems (Redis, SQS, RabbitMQ), and the trade offs vs monoliths. Database design: Strong SQL fundamentals. You can design a normalised relational schema from scratch, understand indexing strategies, and know when to break the rules (denormalisation, caching, read replicas). NoSQL exposure is a plus. AWS experience: Practical knowledge of core AWS services - EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, CloudWatch. You should be able to design a cost effective, scalable AWS architecture and explain why you chose each service. API design: Deep understanding of REST principles, JSON payloads, webhooks, OAuth/JWT authentication, rate limiting, versioning, and idempotency. Diagramming & Documentation: Expert level in Lucidchart, Draw.io, Miro, or similar. Proven experience writing technical specs in Confluence and tracking work through Jira. System state design: You can confidently model complex state machines (e.g. mapping how an order transitions from Pending Allocated In Transit Delivered, including all the failure paths in between). 4. The Profile We Are Looking For You are a translator with engineering credibility: You can listen to an operations manager talk about warehouse chaos and translate it into a microservice design, an ERD, and a clean Confluence page that the dev team can build from. You can also defend that design when challenged. You are pragmatic, not academic: You understand that perfect architecture doesn't exist - only architecture that ships and supports the business. You make sensible trade offs and explain them clearly. You are detail obsessed: You do not leave edge cases to chance. When you write a spec, the dev team rarely has to ask "what happens if this fails?" You are an exceptional communicator: You possess crystal clear written and spoken English. You can comfortably present to the CEO one hour and pair with a senior engineer the next. You are commercially aware: You understand that every technical decision has a business cost. You don't propose solutions in isolation - you weigh effort, value, and risk. You are ready to be in the room: You thrive in a fast paced, in person environment. (Remote or hybrid work is not available for this role.) 5. What We Offer A pivotal role at the heart of a fast growing logistics technology business Genuine ownership of the technical direction of major platform features Direct exposure to the CTO, CEO, and senior leadership A modern tech stack (Laravel, MySQL, OSRM, AWS) and the freedom to influence its direction A competitive salary, negotiable based on experience Manchester city centre office, with the team in the room every day

Data Analyst - Pitstops
relaytech.co
Relay is fundamentally reshaping how goods move in an online era. Backed by Europe's largest-ever logistics Series A ($35M), led by deep-tech investors Plural (whose portfolio spans fusion energy and space exploration), Relay is scaling faster than 99.98% of venture-backed startups. We're assembling the most talent-dense team the logistics industry has ever seen. Relay's Mission is free commerce from friction. Today, high delivery costs act as a hidden tax on e commerce, quietly shaping what can be sold online and limiting who can participate. We envision a world where more goods move more freely between more people, making the online shopping experience seamless and accessible to everyone. TEAM 110 people, more than half in engineering, product and data 45+ advanced degrees across computer science, mathematics and operations research Thousands of data points captured, calculated, analysed and predicted for every single parcel we handle An intellectually vibrant culture of first principles thinking, tight feedback loops and relentless experimentation OVERVIEW Relay's Pitstop network is the convenience store backbone of the operation. Customers drop off and collect parcels at these locations, Middle Mile drivers hand off and pick up, and the whole network depends on independent retailers behaving in ways that make Relay work. They aren't Relay staff. We don't control their attention, their turnover, or what else is happening behind their counter. Every behaviour we need has to be produced through systems, incentives, and the app. The Pitstop squad's job is to build those systems. Today the network runs at around 170k parcels a day, propped up by a small operations team and twelve LiveOps FTE absorbing the day to day breakage. The squad's mission is to take the network from 170k to 2M parcels a day without LiveOps scaling linearly with it. That means systematising launch readiness, pitstop performance, pricing structure, and retention so the same number of operators can support a network twelve times the size. As a Data Analyst in the Pitstop squad, you will own the analytics that make all of this measurable. Are launches hitting day 1 quality? Is handover speed improving where new in app behaviour nudges have rolled out? Which pitstops are heading for churn and why? What's actually driving LiveOps ticket load, and which interventions are removing it? You'll build the monitoring layer the squad relies on, run the cost and performance investigations that shape what gets built next, and become the squad's source of truth on what's working. Relay operates a centralised data team of around 30 data engineers, analysts, and data scientists, with analysts embedded into squads across the business. You will sit in the Pitstop squad, working day to day with operations, sales, engineering, design, and research. You will report into the centralised data team and be line managed by the Lead Data Analyst for Middle Mile, Pitstops & Sortation. WHAT YOU'LL DO Own the Pitstop squad's five outcome metrics: Launch Velocity, Handover Speed, Handover Accuracy, Pitstop Retention, and Indirect Cost per Parcel. Build the monitoring around them, investigate movement, and translate the numbers into next actions for the squad. Run the analytics behind pitstop performance and pricing: which behaviours move handover speed, how commercial tiers and clawbacks are landing, which pitstops are systematically under or over performing, and what the in app nudges are actually changing on the counter. Quantify the impact of squad initiatives in cost terms: how much LiveOps load did this self serve flow remove, how much Middle Mile driver time did this handover prompt unlock, and what is the CPP impact of retention work on mature pitstops. Build launch readiness analytics: cohort ramp curves, time to maturity, where new pitstops break in week one, and how the launch playbook should evolve as volume grows. Build the retention layer: a health score for pitstops, at risk alerting, churn diagnosis triaged by cause, and the feedback loop back into acquisition and onboarding. Investigate LiveOps ticket load by category and reason. Quantify what each ticket type costs, where the volume is concentrated, and which pillars should systematise it next. Define KPIs and build dashboards that make Pitstop performance transparent to the squad, to operations, and to leadership. Maintain and extend the squad's dbt models and data pipelines that underpin the monitoring layer. WHO WILL THRIVE IN THIS ROLE? You want to understand how an operation actually works, not analyse it from a distance. Pitstops are messy, varied, and behaviour driven. The best work comes from people who can sit with operators, watch handovers happen, and translate what they see into measurable signals. You're excited by cost and behaviour problems. Where is LiveOps spending time, what's driving handover friction, and where are systems failing in ways the data can show but the squad cannot yet feel. You can navigate messy operational data and turn it into metrics people trust. You're comfortable working alongside operations, design, engineering, and commercial stakeholders, and you can embed your analysis into their workflows. You're fluent in SQL and experienced with BI tools, with strong problem solving instincts. You have at least 3 years experience, ideally with exposure to logistics, parcels, retail operations, or another network scale operational business. You care about impact, not just insight. Success in this role is measured by whether the Pitstop network can scale without LiveOps scaling with it. You communicate clearly with non technical stakeholders and can explain what the data shows, where the limits are, and what to do next. WHO THRIVES AT RELAY? Aim with Precision: You define problems clearly and measure your impact meticulously. Play to Win: You chase bold bets, tackle the hard stuff, and view constraints as fuel, not friction. 1% Better Every Day: You believe that small, consistent improvements lead to exponential growth. You move quickly, deliver results, and learn from every experience. All In, All the Time: You show up and step up. You take ownership from start to finish and do what it takes to deliver when it counts. People Powered Greatness: You invest in your teammates. You give and receive feedback with care and candour. You build trust through high standards and shared success. Grow the Whole Pie: You seek out win win solutions for merchants, couriers, and our customers, because when they thrive, so do we. If these resonate, and you combine strong technical fundamentals with entrepreneurial drive, let's connect. Relay is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity, inclusion, and fostering a workplace where everyone thrives.
