Engineering Manager | SAP S/4HANA and Core Java

The Rate - £700 to £750 per day
IR35 Status - Outside IR35
The Location - Remote/Manchester
Duration - 12 months

About the Client

Digital Skills are partnered with a global brand technology business undertaking a large scale migration and modernisation programme. The client is evolving their core integration platform as they transition from a Legacy SAP ECC environment to SAP S/4HANA. This is a key role within an expanding engineering function responsible for critical data and workflow systems.

About the Role

This position offers the opportunity to lead and shape a growing engineering team responsible for an essential integration platform. The Engineering Manager will oversee people leadership, platform stability, and delivery outcomes, guiding the technical direction while ensuring alignment with regulatory and organisational standards.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of engineers, fostering a high performance and inclusive culture
  • Oversee engineering delivery, quality, and best practices within the team
  • Provide technical leadership on architectural decisions and implementation approaches
  • Work closely with Product, Architecture, Security, and Risk teams to shape the roadmap and delivery priorities
  • Support migration from Legacy SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA
  • Maintain platform health, including incident escalations and technical debt reduction
  • Embed agile ways of working and promote continuous learning
  • Drive innovation, process improvement, and technical excellence across the team

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Experience in large scale data processing and workflow platforms
  • Strong background in Back End engineering, ideally with Core Java
  • Exposure to SAP S/4HANA or similar enterprise systems
  • Proven track record modernising or migrating Legacy platforms
  • Engineering management experience with hands on technical credibility
  • Understanding of SOX, GDPR, PII or other regulatory frameworks
  • Excellent communication skills and experience handling complex people matters
  • Familiarity with AWS or cloud computing fundamentals

Summary of the Best Candidate

The ideal candidate is an experienced engineering leader with at least two years of formal management and extensive Back End development experience. They will have strong knowledge of Java, experience with complex data pipelines, and direct involvement in major migration or replatforming initiatives. They will be proactive, communicative, and capable of guiding teams through technical and organisational change.
