Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Head of Data to lead the data vision, strategy, and governance framework for a high-profile science and technology organisation.

This role offers the opportunity to shape how data is leveraged to drive innovation, insight, and decision-making in a complex and fast-moving environment.

  • Security Clearance: SC Required (sole UK nationals only)
  • Pay Rate to Candidate: £1084 per day day
  • Contract Length: 12 months
  • Location: Porton Down (Salisbury) or Portsdown West (Fareham) - hybrid with occasional site visits

The Role

As Head of Data, you will:

  • Define and deliver the organisation's data vision, strategy, and long-term roadmap.
  • Establish robust data governance and assurance frameworks, ensuring compliance with regulatory, statutory, and organisational requirements.
  • Build and lead high-performing data teams, fostering a collaborative, innovative, and inclusive culture.
  • Represent the organisation at senior levels, providing advice and guidance on data capability, policy, and best practice.
  • Engage with external partners across industry, academia, and government to leverage expertise, enhance capability, and share knowledge.
  • Translate strategic vision into actionable initiatives and measurable outcomes.

About You

You will be a proven data leader with strong strategic, governance, and influencing experience.

Essential experience:

  • Senior leadership, governance, or assurance experience in the data domain.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and collaborate across all levels of an organisation.
  • Experience defining and implementing data strategies in complex environments.
  • Strong background in data governance, architecture, or analytics.
  • Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Information Systems, or related field.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and leadership skills.

Desirable:

  • Experience delivering strategic data solutions under uncertainty.
  • DAMA accreditation (associate level or higher) or ability to achieve within six months.
  • Exposure to AI, data analytics, or related technical domains.
  • Experience influencing senior stakeholders across large organisations.
