Job Title: Senior Email Engineer

Location: London (Hybrid) 2 days a week

Department: Workplace Engineering/IT Infrastructure

Total Package: £115,000 - £145,000

About the Role

The Senior Email Engineer will be responsible for leading the design, operation, and optimization of enterprise-level Microsoft Exchange systems across on-premises and cloud environments. This hands-on leadership role involves managing a small but skilled team, ensuring automation, compliance, and security standards are met, while continuously enhancing the reliability and performance of email infrastructure.

The role also plays a key part in developing long-term strategies, integrating with broader workplace technologies, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure robust and secure communication systems across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, mentor, and support a junior engineer, fostering collaboration and continuous learning.

Technical Ownership

  • Oversee operations, maintenance, and upgrades of Microsoft Exchange Server, Exchange Online, and related email systems.
  • Ensure smooth integration with collaboration and business applications.
  • Define, implement, and enforce policies, standards, and best practices for email usage and compliance.

System Optimization & Upgrades

  • Drive performance optimization, consolidation, and life cycle management of email platforms.
  • Implement system updates, patches, and new feature rollouts.

Security & Compliance

  • Manage and maintain security controls using tools such as Microsoft Defender for Office 365 (ATP), Purview, Enterprise Vault, and Mail Flow rules.
  • Conduct risk assessments and enforce compliance with internal and regulatory policies.

Continuity & Disaster Recovery

  • Design and maintain disaster recovery, backup, and business continuity strategies for email services.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work closely with business and IT stakeholders to ensure the email infrastructure supports organizational goals.
  • Collaborate with teams across Security, Network, and Application domains to align on infrastructure strategy.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain technical documentation and operational runbooks.
  • Monitor and report on system performance, KPIs, and service improvements.

What You'll Bring

  • Deep technical expertise in Microsoft Exchange Server, Exchange Online, and PostFix email technologies.
  • Strong understanding of email security, compliance, and backup tools (eg Purview, Enterprise Vault, Commvault, Defender for Office 365).
  • Familiarity with the Microsoft Modern Workplace ecosystem (Entra, Intune, Teams, Enterprise Apps, Licensing).
  • Experience with automation and DevOps tools such as Power Shell, Azure DevOps, Azure Automation, Terraform, Ansible, Service-Now, and Dell One Identity.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute strategies for email system management.
  • Strong risk management and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with a focus on stakeholder management.
  • Relevant certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Exchange Administrator Associate or Microsoft 365 Certified: Messaging Administrator Associate are highly desirable.
