About the Role We are looking for a
Communications Systems Engineer to join a specialist engineering team in Gloucester. This role focuses on the design and development of
software-defined radio (SDR) systems, including architectures, interfaces, protocols, and network topologies. You'll play a key role in delivering advanced communication solutions for defence, cyber, and intelligence programmes.

Key Responsibilities - Design and optimise SDR system architectures for advanced communications applications.
- Develop and implement interfaces and communication protocols.
- Design and model network topologies to ensure seamless integration and performance.
- Collaborate with hardware and software teams to integrate SDR solutions into larger mission systems.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and communication protocols.
- Conduct testing and validation of communication systems, including interfaces, protocols, and networks.
- Work closely with cross-disciplinary teams to support wider system integration.
Skills and Experience Required - Strong experience with SDR system architectures.
- Knowledge of communication interfaces, protocols, and standards (e.g. TCP/IP, IEEE 802, cellular network standards, error correction schemes).
- Experience in designing network topologies and link budgets.
- Familiarity with SDR system integration and related components.
- Proficiency in network modelling and system design tools.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on system performance.
Desirable Skills - Experience with real-time communication systems and network management.
- Knowledge of OpenCPI, GnuRadio, Python, C/C++, and other SDR tools.
- Experience with Linux environments and version control (e.g. GitLab).
- Background in defence or cyber communications systems.
- Familiarity with interoperability testing and network performance analysis.
