About the role
We are seeking to appoint to an exciting new Full-Stack Development Lead role on a permanent, full time basis. This is a pivotal post within our established and highly impactful IT Team, which has been designed to ensure that our IT and software development operations run smoothly.
As a senior member of the IT team, you will support service delivery by leading, driving and delivering longer-term technical projects to meet deadlines and by maintaining agreed service levels. This new role builds our IT team’s resilience at a senior technical level; you will report to the Head of IT who, amongst other management duties, acts as the overall IT architect and also leads, drives, and delivers various technical projects. As a senior leader, you will also act as a mentor to more junior team members to assist them in developing existing skills and gaining new ones.
This post presents a great opportunity to take ownership of various projects previously overseen by the Head of IT, which could include: maintenance and further development of the departmental website; redesigning and reimplementing the examinations database; and developing various helper and automation scripts for the maintenance and automation of our IT systems. Although you will be primarily based in central Oxford, the department are open to a hybrid working arrangement at typically two days per week from home.
About you
We are looking for candidates who are able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the principles and technical processes of full-stack web application development, including substantial development experience with an expert level in at least one of Python, PHP or Ruby on Rails, and substantial frontend development experience (e.g. using JavaScript, CSS, HTML).
You will have an honours degree or equivalent experience, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, in particular the ability to work very closely with a variety of end users including senior academic and professional services staff, students, visitors and collaborators, and to communicate deeply technical concepts to non-technical audiences. You will be highly self-motivated and enjoy working both independently and as an effective member of a small team, with a light management touch.

Skills and Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in commercial software development with expertise in leading frameworks and a range of languages (JavaScript, Django, Python, Java and C# .NET) Experienced as a hands-on, full-stack developer, leading technical teams through example and serving as a mentor in software engineering best practices Proficiency in software engineering methodologies including design patterns, microservice architectures, and secure-by-design strategies, with an understanding of Cloud Security Principles Solid experience in implementing DevOps, continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) and test automation Experience with cloud-native SaaS and PaaS environments, DevOps type environments, skilled in database design and implementation, using technologies such as SQL and NoSQL Role and Responsibilities: Lead agile teams dedicated to supporting projects for national digital services, developing the applications and solutions of the future Take charge of end-to-end support for their cloud-native digital services, working with your clients on regular basis to understand requirements, budgets and delivery expectations of their end-clients Ensure an outstanding client experience by consistently meeting SLAs, KPIs and contractual obligations to your end-clients, managing expectations and providing a professional consulting perspective in your approach Cultivate strong client and internal team relationships through open communication and transparency with both your team, your peer group and end-clients N.B.
