The Role:

It is an exciting time here at City Plumbing. We've recently become a private equity backed business and have committed to change the way we think about our IT & Software platforms, investing heavily in our Digital capabilities with the purpose of transforming the way we engage with our customers.

As our Head of Software Engineering, you will be responsible for defining, leading and delivering the engineering strategy as well as continuously striving to improve the service levels for delivery and processes.

In addition to managing your internal teams, you'll also be responsible for managing outside business stakeholders, so strong influencing skills are essential!

As our Head of Software Engineering your areas of focus will include:

  • Serve as a technology lead to help shape and define our approach to engineering all our digital solutions across the business.

  • Capture and articulate our development systems and programs, aligning to the company philosophy and practices, but also bringing in your own and industry best practices focusing on modern engineering concepts, practices and processes.

  • Collaborate with Enterprise and Digital Architects to ensure the technology stack of the digital platform is engineered for high performance while enabling accelerated delivery.

  • Management of 3rd party delivery teams and consultancies to establish best practice engineering capabilities to drive our digital transformation roadmap.

  • Create a team culture along with the wider ITLT that brings the best of technical practices and customer focussed behaviour through managing and mentoring a team of engineers.

This is a remote-based role with ad-hoc travel to team and business meetings.

You should be based in the UK and our Head Office is based in Crick, Northamptonshire.

This means you could be from areas such as Northampton, Milton Keynes, London, Birmingham

Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham, Chesterfield, Sheffield, Leicester, Loughborough, Oxford, Watford.

Required skills and competencies:

  • Experience working at a senior level within Software Engineering.

  • Proven leadership skills and experience managing digital development teams.

  • A background in Agile development process with a desire to move to full DevOps.

  • Experience of managing third parties through significant organisational structural and technology change.

  • Fantastic stakeholder management skills, able to manage business expectations and influence business leaders.

  • Focused on delivery, so an excellent knowledge of delivery processes is essential.

It is highly likely you will have worked in any of the following roles and/or markets, and worked with the following products and/or services: Chief Architect, Engineering Fellow, Head of Engineering, Head of IT, Head of IT Transformation, Head of Software Engineering, Senior Staff Engineer, Software Architect, Software Engineering, Software Engineering Director, Tech Lead.
