About the opportunity:

Jacobs has developed one of the leading and longest-standing geotechnical and tunnelling consultancy capabilities in the UK, with approximately 400 geotechnical and tunnelling engineers delivering practical and innovative solutions to ground-related problems.

We are entering an exciting time in our growth following recent successful bids and as such, are looking to expand our Rock Engineering Group to increase our capacity and capability within the underground space market. To facilitate this expansion, Jacobs are now looking to employ people with a flair and passion in the diverse field of rock engineering.

The successful person will join a respected and ambitious company with excellent career prospects and international opportunities. The diverse project portfolio will provide diverse opportunities and experiences within the Ground Engineering sector to further develop your career. Your role and responsibilities will include:

  • Providing rock engineering support to infrastructure, building, tunnelling, geo-energy, nuclear new build and geological disposal projects of all scales in the UK and overseas.
  • Scoping, supervising and interpretating ground investigations including drilling, in situ testing, laboratory testing and long-term monitoring.
  • Report writing, specifically for the interpretation of rock engineering and hydro-geomechanical data to inform ground behaviour assessments for engineering design.
  • Leading early career staff, checking their work, and reviewing reports.
  • Providing technical support and advice to the wider Jacobs business, clients, stakeholders, contractors, laboratories and regulators .
  • Receiving training and providing training and mentoring to colleagues.
  • Writing technical peer reviewed journal papers and presenting at conferences.

Here's What You'll Need:
  • A Masters degree in Rock Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, or other closely related geoscience or engineering subject.
  • To be chartered or very close to being chartered with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Geological Society of London, or Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (IoM 3 ).
  • A good foundational understanding of the principles of rock engineering at depths ranging from ground level to at least 1 km.
  • A willingness to develop your skills and understanding in rock engineering.
  • An understanding of our vision for the Jacobs Rock Engineering Group and motivation to work as part of our team to achieve it.
  • Knowledge and experience of ground investigations, drilling, wireline logging, in situ mechanical and hydraulic testing and advanced rock laboratory testing.
  • Project experience from FEED through to construction.
  • Effective 360-degree communication skills and a desire to build effective working relationships.
  • Demonstratable report writing and presentation skills.
  • A drive to progress to technical leadership.
  • Full clean driving licence and a willingness to work on sites both within the UK and abroad.
  • Preferable: Knowledge and experience of analytical and 2D/3D numerical modelling.
