Senior Software Engineer RPG Markerstudy Group have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Software Engineer to join. This is a hybrid role with the requirement to work two days a week from either our Manchester or Peterborough office. Role Purpose The Senior Software Engineer is an experienced hands-on engineer who analyses, designs, develops, tests, deploys and supports software within a squad. The role takes ownership of larger and more complex work, contributes to technical design and helps the squad deliver secure, reliable and maintainable software. Senior Software Engineers raise the capability of colleagues through pairing, peer review, coaching and knowledge-sharing, but have no formal people-management accountability. They are accountable for their own delivery and for positively influencing the engineering outcomes of the squad. Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities Develop, test, deploy and support high-quality software features, components, integrations and systems, with particular focus on larger or more complex items. Take end-to-end ownership of assigned engineering work, from clarification and design through implementation, testing, release and operational support. Break down complex work and provide reasoned estimates, identifying dependencies, assumptions, risks and areas requiring further investigation. Produce proportionate technical designs, decision records and documentation in collaboration with the squad and relevant technical stakeholders. Apply software development lifecycle processes, engineering standards, security controls and agreed ways of working consistently. Write maintainable production code and automated tests, with a focus on quality, performance, resilience, security and operability. Constructively review the work of other engineers through pairing, code collaboration and peer review. Support the planning and successful delivery of squad commitments, communicating progress, issues and technical risks openly. Coach and support Software Engineers and Junior Software Engineers through practical technical guidance, without undertaking formal line-management duties. Identify technical debt, defects and improvement opportunities, agreeing practical actions with the squad and technical leadership. Collaborate with product, delivery, testing, architecture, security and operational colleagues to achieve agreed business and customer outcomes. Support production incidents and problem investigation, helping the team resolve root causes and embed learning. Skills and Experience Significant experience as a professional IBM RPG Developer Proficiency in RPG coding, using modern IDE (VS Code) Experience integrating RPG applications with web services (REST/SOAP) Familiarity with APIs, JSON/XML parsing, and data transformation Strong experience with RPGLE (free and fixed format), including modern free-format syntax. Proficiency in IBM i (AS/400, iSeries) environment and tools (e.g., SEU, RDi, ACS, PDM, CL, VS Code). Experience with service programs, modules, procedures, and sub-procedures. Knowledge of data structures, arrays, and error handling in RPGLE. Ability to read, maintain, and refactor legacy RPG (III/IV) code. Familiarity with job control, batch processing, and interactive programs. Version control usage (e.g., Git, Aldon). Experience designing and delivering complex software features, components, integrations or systems in a production environment. Good understanding of software architecture and design principles, APIs, data, security, performance, resilience and maintainability. Thorough understanding of the software development lifecycle and experience working in an agile delivery environment. Practical experience of unit testing, automated testing, source control, CI/CD and code-review practices. Work independently to manage tasks, timelines, and deliverables with minimal supervision. Principal Data Engineer We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Data Engineer to join our team. This is a hybrid role, with requirements to work from either our Manchester, Stoke or Peterborough office twice a week. Role Purpose The Principal Data Engineer is the senior technical authority for the Databricks Lakehouse platform, responsible for defining engineering standards, architecture, and best practices across the enterprise data ecosystem. The role leads the design and delivery of scalable, secure, high-performing data products using Databricks, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog and Azure Data Services The role provides technical leadership, ensuring solutions are robust, cost-effective, highly available, and aligned to business strategy and operational resilience requirements. Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities Being the primary technical contact on data for all new projects, designing the detailed data solution and ensuring that requirements are understood and achievable. Design scalable Medallion Architecture solutions (Bronze, Silver, Gold). Ensure data governance, lineage, security, and compliance requirements are embedded within all solutions. Provide technical leadership across multiple squads. Driving continuous improvement through defining and redefining processes within the team, increased automation and providing detailed technical roadmaps of how to achieve our target state. Coaching and mentoring other members of the team in technical, delivery and behavioural areas, as well as being the primary escalation point for technical issues and decisions. Be the technical contact with vendors and data source supplier to ensure data roadmap is aligned. Closely working with stakeholders to ensure they are meeting our needs and delivering to required standards. Taking Lead on data product design and development and be the technical expert in all data engineering toolset. A heavy focus on resilience, availability and recovery to provide a solid platform that meets Operational Resilience needs for all our systems. Proactive technical resource management including availability, capacity, performance and operability. Be able to deliver robust data products end to end from requirement gathering to release within time and budget. Create clear documentation for the data solution. Communicate well with stakeholder and non-technical team. To ensure all codes are written are in high standard and perform well. Provide technical training and mentor data engineers and support their personal technical development. To ensure data dictionaries and models are robust and maintained on a regular basis. Extensive hands-on experience delivering solutions using Databricks. Extensive experience designing and implementing Lakehouse architectures. Strong commercial experience using PySpark, Python, SQL and Delta Lake. Experience optimising Databricks workloads for performance, scalability and cost efficiency Previous experience delivering solutions within insurance, financial services or similarly regulated industries. Ability to understand and interpret business needs and how they translate to technical and functional requirements. Good project management skills; experience managing projects / requests with multiple senior stakeholders. Experience managing and mentoring engineering teams. Security Product Owner This is a hybrid role with the requirement to work 2 days a week from either our Manchester, Stoke, Peterborough or Tunbridge Wells office. Role Purpose The Security Product Owner is responsible for owning, prioritising, and delivering security products and services that protect the organisation while enabling business objectives. The role ensures that security capabilities (e.g., identity, endpoint protection, cloud security, detection tooling) are managed as products, with clear value, defined roadmaps, and measurable outcomes. It translates security strategy into actionable backlogs, prioritised delivery, and continuous improvement. The position is accountable for ensuring value realisation in security tooling investment, security controls are usable, effective, consistent across the estate and aligned with business and technology needs, maximising adoption and risk reduction. Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities Own the end-to-end lifecycle of security products and services (e.g., IAM, EDR, SIEM, cloud security). Define and maintain the product vision, roadmap, and backlog Ensure delivery of measurable outcomes, including risk reduction, control coverage and user adoption. Balance competing priorities across risk, usability, cost, and technical feasibility. Define, refine, and prioritise product backlog items, ensuring alignment to objectives. Work with engineering and delivery teams to ensure timely and effective implementation. Ensure clear definition of acceptance criteria and outcomes for delivered capabilities. Identify opportunities to enhance, simplify, or automate security capabilities. Skills, Experience and Knowledge Experience in product ownership, product management, or service ownership. Strong understanding of product lifecycle management backlog management and prioritisation. Ability to define clear product outcomes and success criteria. Good understanding of information security principles and controls, including: IDAM, endpoint and network security, cloud and platform security, threat detection and response. Ability to make prioritisation decisions based on data and business needs. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate technical security concepts into business-friendly language. Ability to influence and manage stakeholders across multiple functions. Ability to manage conflicting priorities and expectations.
