We are looking for a Backend Engineering Manager to lead our entire Backend Engineering Practice. This is a people enabler role, focused on coaching, mentorship, and cultivating a high-performance culture. While you won't be hands-on with the code, you must be technically credible to inspire and guide our engineers. You will be responsible for getting the absolute best out of our engineering function, driving excellence across our Microservices, Data, Core Banking, and Integration Guilds. What you'll be doing: Engineering Leadership & Coaching: Lead, coach, and advocate for the Backend Engineering team, serving as a people enabler who unblocks them to increase engagement and productivity. Performance & Culture: Manage the overall performance of the team and drive a high-performance culture with a focus on performance, scalability, privacy, and security. You must be comfortable having difficult conversations to maintain standards. Capability Development: Manage continued capability development, ensuring delivery teams possess the right engineering skills to enable elite delivery. You'll evangelise modern practices like TDD, BDD, and CI/CD. Technical Roadmaps & Consistency: Support the Principal Engineering community in devising and executing technical roadmaps across value streams, driving cross-value-stream consistency where beneficial. Optimising the SDLC: Collaborate across departments (Architecture, Engineering & Delivery) to optimise the software development lifecycle for safety and flow. This includes owning solutions for developer onboarding and generating process and tooling improvements to keep engineers productive. What do we need from you? A genuine passion for people management, coupled with the ability to create and drive a high-performance culture. Significant experience working with backend technologies and a working knowledge of best practices in API, data, and microservices development. While not a hands-on coding role, you must be technically credible. Excellent brokering and collaboration skills, with a proven ability to regularly achieve consensus amongst departments. Proven ability to institute processes like architecture reviews and testing culture to ensure high technical standards are adhered to. What do we need from you? Industry Experience: Proven track record of architecting within Financial Services or other highly regulated industries. Technical Depth: Desired experience with cloud and modern FinTech/AI solutions (e.g., Vertex AI, Thought Machine, Flowable, or similar Core Banking/Workflow tools). Delivery Mastery: Deep understanding and practical application of Product-oriented, Agile, and Lean methodologies, including Continuous Delivery. Documentation Rigour: Familiarity with modern architectural documentation standards, such as C4 (Context, Containers, Components, Code) and CSVLOD (Context, Scope, Views, Languages, Owner, Date). Understanding of modern architectural patterns such as microservices, event-driven architect and serverless computing Engineering Acumen: Familiarity with the end-to-end software engineering life cycle. Our Tech Delivery teams are responsible for managing and delivering all change in Atom, technical & non-technical. We've aligned our Tech Delivery teams to business value streams covering Mortgages, Business Lending, Savings, Enterprise & Platform. These value streams are divided into sub-streams, such as Origination and Servicing within Mortgages. As an Atom Delivery Lead, you'll lead the Technology activity for a value sub-stream. You'll collaborate with your value stream & sub-stream commercial teams & product managers, understanding & contributing to the build of the business roadmap & product strategy, whilst also creating this for your sub-stream. A focus on delivering early value to customers frequently & predictably is key, whilst executing on the change programme. We are committed to applying DevOps principles & practices on our journey to become an elite delivery organisation, as part of this you'll need to nurture and inspire your sub-stream team to take accountability for their delivery process and the great outcomes they deliver. We do whatever it takes to get the job done, here at Atom, so this role will involve at points rolling up your sleeves and diving into UX design reviews, testing software, architecture & code reviews, writing user stories and editing technical documents. What will you be doing? You will also: Champion good practice within their teams to support their ongoing improvement. Work with their architecture team members to create a technology strategy. Help the team measure and understand their performance using relevant metrics (DORA and other metrics such as throughput, cycle time, happiness), using them as a basis for improvement. Utilise feedback for continuous learning and improvement in efficient and incremental value delivery to accelerate speed to market. Identify and implement improvements in People/Team Topologies, Process, Technology and Culture. Manage of the Run/Opex and Change/Capex budgets for their sub-stream, working with Finance on forecasts and actuals. What do we need from you?
