About The Role This is an exciting opportunity to join a fast-paced creative visual team at The Telegraph. You will be joining the Graphics team where we continually look to transform information into compelling visual storytelling forms, underpinned by our graphic design and journalistic principles. We want someone who is going to help shape the future of The Telegraph's graphic journalism using their creativity to engage our audience with informative content. The ideal candidate will be able to adapt their visual ideas to different narrative types and apply them utilising relevant digital and print formats. Closing Date 30 July Key Responsibilities Create engaging information graphics for both print and digital platforms Visually communicate complex subject matter in a clear and concise way Develop new approaches for presenting stories on our publishing platforms Work on breaking news, lead stories, investigations and longform features Interpret, edit and visualise data into engaging pieces of graphic journalism Report to the Director of Graphic Journalism, managing daily workflow and helping to establish long-term information design standards Collaborate with: Editors, Reporters, Data Journalists, Producers, Designers, Developers, Animators, Illustrators, Video producers Research topics surrounding stories to further enhance the quality of graphics Initiate information graphics by pitching ideas to editorial desks Lead the conversation on information graphics, using your expertise to inform colleagues of best practices and appropriate solutions Share technical developments with your colleagues to help progress the team's capabilities Key Skills Advanced practice of graphic design fundamentals (Typography, colour perception, composition, geometry etc) In-depth knowledge of editorial design and visual storytelling within publishing Comprehensive understanding of graphic production on both print and digital platforms Cartography and geospatial analysis (QGIS, MapShaper) Proficient in technical illustration (Adobe Illustrator. Experience in 3D programs a bonus) Competent in data visualisation tools (Raw, DataWrapper) Fundamental front-end code capabilities (HTML/CSS/JS) Extensive understanding of user focused design and interface design (Figma) Data analysis and editing, to establish trends and points of interest (Excel, Sheets. The Telegraph is keen to hear from freelancers with digital production experience. As a freelance digital production journalist, you will sub-edit and build online articles for both home and world news to ensure that The Telegraph's content is produced to the highest standard in a timely way, ranging from breaking news to long form reads. Working in a fast moving and often pressurised environment, you will bring high quality production skills and the ability to publish numerous stories per shift with flair and attention to detail. It is vital you have the ability to craft sharp headlines, spot potential errors, and sub copy in a quick and accurate way. You should also have a flair for presentation, including pictures, graphics and interactive particles. You should have experience from a regional, trade or national level publication, preferably of working in a news production environment. Shift times are typically 2pm until 10pm, although there are a range of start times, across a seven day rota. All shifts will be in person, in The Telegraph's newsroom in Victoria.
