Fully funded 4 year PhD - Machine Learning and child mental health - Birmingham AI for good: Using machine learning to improve psychological wellbeing for children and adolescents with BERRI University of Birmingham, School of Computer Science Do you know anyone that wants to do a PhD in machine learning/AI who cares about social impact and wants to use their skills to improve child mental health? I'm the field supervisor for a new PhD at Birmingham University using BERRI data to look at a number of interesting research themes, using applied machine learning and neuroscience. The academic supervisors are Professor Peter Tino (computer science) and Dr Stephane de Brito (psychology). It is a four year, fully funded opportunity with a stipend starting at £19,237 (this is what you take home, it isn't taxed like a salary) plus all the fees are covered. This PhD project aims to validate the efficacy of the BERRI tool in identifying early neurodevelopmental and mental health markers in children and adolescents, potentially predictive of adverse outcomes later in life. By leveraging machine learning techniques, the research seeks to elucidate the trajectory of symptom profiles over time and explore strategies for effectively mitigating identified risks across clinical, educational, and community settings. You will spend at least one day per week within the clinical psychology team at BERRI, whilst the rest of your time will be university-based and focused on the research strands that will lead to papers for publication and your PhD thesis. This is a computer science PhD, so it requires someone with strong quantitative skills (eg a graduate in computer science, maths, statistics, physics or engineering), who can use advanced statistical software and preferably already program in at least one language.
