Business UnitVBU - TrakM8Job DescriptionJob PurposeThe Senior Embedded Linux & Vision AI Engineer leads the technical development of Trakm8's embedded Linux device platforms and AI-powered camera products, taking them from working prototypes through to reliable, certified, production devices deployed in customer fleets. The role combines deep embedded Linux platform work (BSP, kernel, drivers, build systems, OTA updates) with the deployment and optimisation of computer vision models on resource-constrained edge hardware.As the senior engineer in this domain, the postholder sets the technical direction for embedded Linux and vision AI within the Devices team, raises the capability of colleagues through mentoring and documented practices, and ensures this critical area is never dependent on a single person.For candidates with proven engineering leadership experience, this role may be combined with the Devices Team Lead position; please indicate in your application if you wish to be considered for the combined role.Key Responsibilities:Embedded Linux PlatformOwn the embedded Linux platform for camera and device products: BSP maintenance, kernel and driver work, and build systems (Yocto or Buildroot)Design and maintain robust OTA update, provisioning and device management mechanismsOptimise boot time, power management and system reliability for vehicle-mounted, battery-conscious devicesVision AI & Camera SystemsIntegrate, optimise and deploy computer vision models on edge hardware (TensorFlow Lite, ONNX Runtime), including quantisation and hardware acceleration (NPU/GPU/DSP)Develop and tune the camera pipeline (V4L2, ISP configuration) for automotive imaging conditionsDefine and track accuracy and performance metrics for vision features, and improve them release on releaseProductisation & DeliveryTake camera and device products from prototype through field trials to production releaseSupport certification, type approval and manufacturing test for new devicesWork with hardware, cloud and platform teams to deliver complete end-to-end solutionsQuality & SecurityImplement secure boot, signed updates and device hardening in line with UN R155/R156 requirementsEstablish automated testing and CI for firmware images and model updatesEnsure releases meet reliability, safety and regulatory expectations for automotive devicesTechnical Leadership & MentoringSet standards and documented practices for embedded Linux and vision AI developmentMentor and develop other engineers in the team, sharing knowledge deliberately to remove single points of failureContribute to technical strategy and roadmaps with the Devices Team Lead, Architecture function and CPTOChampion AI-assisted development tools and modern engineering practiceSkills / Experience / Competency Required:Essential5+ years of embedded Linux development experience: kernel, drivers, BSP work and build systems (Yocto or Buildroot)Strong C and C++ skills, with Python for tooling, testing and ML workflowsProven experience deploying and optimising ML/computer vision models on edge hardware, including quantisation and hardware acceleration (e.g. TensorFlow Lite, ONNX Runtime)Experience with computer vision frameworks and models (OpenCV, YOLO-class detectors)Experience with camera subsystems and pipelines (V4L2, ISP tuning, MIPI-CSI)Track record of taking embedded products from prototype to production and field deploymentAbility to define and work to measurable accuracy, performance and power targetsClear communicator, able to explain complex technical trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiencesDesirableAutomotive experience: CAN/vehicle protocols, ISO 26262, ASPICE, UN R155/R156Engineering leadership or line management experience (relevant to the combined Team Lead option)Cellular IoT (LTE-M, NB-IoT, 5G) and wireless connectivity experienceHardware security and cryptographic implementations (secure boot, secure elements)MLOps for edge devices: model versioning, telemetry-driven retraining, fleet rollout of modelsExperience with driver monitoring, ADAS or other automotive vision applicationsPersonal Attributes:Technically credible senior engineer who leads by example and earns trust quicklyPragmatic, able to balance research-quality ambition with shipping reliable productsGenerous with knowledge;
