About TORTUS AI At TORTUS we work with clinicians and hospitals to provide clinically safe and reliable AI. We use speech-to-text and LLM models to infer information about a patient visit and provide verified documentation and actions - eliminating the documentation burden that costs clinicians hours every day. We've recorded over 1 million consultations. Clients include London Ambulance Service and a large proportion of UK GP surgeries. We are now entering our next phase: an AI doctor product and a £30M Series A raise. About the role Same generalist full-stack profile as our Full-stack Engineer role, but with a higher and more specific bar around AI integration. We are not looking for engineers who have called an LLM API. We are looking for engineers who have thought deeply about what it means to build reliably on top of probabilistic systems. What you'll do Everything in the Full-stack Engineer role Design and build product features integrating deeply with LLMs in production Build defensively against hallucinations, output instability, and distribution shift Contribute to approaches for validating AI output quality in multilingual contexts - e.g. validating medical notes generated in a language other than English Work with our AI research team to implement architectures and enhancements they propose What we're looking for All of the Full-stack Engineer profile, plus: Production experience building systems integrating with LLMs - well beyond API integration Strong intuition for failure modes of non-deterministic systems: output validation, fallback strategies, confidence thresholds, human in the loop design Ability to reason about AI quality in adversarial or ambiguous conditions Familiarity with prompt engineering, RAG, fine tuning, or LLM evaluation frameworks Nice to have Experience in clinical AI or high stakes AI domains Exposure to AI safety concepts applied in production Contributed to internal AI evaluation or red teaming exercises What does wild success look like? In 12-18 months, you are the go to person when the team hits a hard problem at the LLM integration layer. You have built evaluation pipelines that give the team confidence in what we ship. The Principal AI Researcher seeks you out as the translation layer between research ideas and production reality. Where does this role take you? This is one of the highest leverage engineering roles at TORTUS as AI becomes central to everything we build. You could grow into a staff engineer role specialising in AI systems, or move toward technical leadership of the Lifeboat squad as it scales. Our stack GCP GKE Terraform GitOps & ArgoCD PostgreSQL + Redis TypeScript across the stack (React, NestJS) Python/FastAPI for ML workloads Pub/Sub for events Self hosted ML models What we offer 28 days holiday + bank holidays Latest MacBook and the right equipment Office first culture based at Holborn Town Hall - typically Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday in office; Monday and Friday flexible The chance to genuinely transform healthcare

About the team The AI Deployment Engineering team works closely with frontier startups. We are trusted advisors to, and thought partners with, startups to ensure that OpenAI's technology is deployed safely and effectively, whilst also partnering with engineering, research, and product to turn those insights into evaluation systems, product improvements, and better model behavior. This team sits at the intersection of customer reality and model quality. We combine hands on technical depth with strong product judgment, helping translate complex, high value use cases into clear signals that can improve both the customer experience and the underlying systems. About the role We are seeking a technically proficient, product minded engineer to help push the frontier of advanced AI with our strategic startup customers. You'll work with some of the most exciting AI startups in the world, helping them optimize their own systems and turning those learnings into durable improvements across OpenAI's research and products. You will partner deeply on complex workflows, identify the gaps that matter, and help transform those gaps into reproducible evaluations and technical insights-helping shape OpenAI's research and product direction. This role is well suited to engineers who are equally comfortable debugging a workflow, iterating on prompts or agents, designing evaluations, and collaborating across research and product. You should be excited by ambiguous, high impact problems and motivated by the opportunity to shape how advanced AI systems improve in practice. This role is based in London. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week. We offer relocation assistance. In this role, you will: Work directly with strategic startup customers to understand critical workflows, uncover failure modes, and identify high impact opportunities for improvement. Prototype and iterate on prompts, agents, and workflow designs to better understand system behavior and unlock customer value. Synthesize and deliver valuable feedback to the Product and Research teams, turning real usage patterns into clear, reproducible evals, benchmarks, and technical artifacts that improve model and product quality and ensure customer grounded learnings influence roadmap and model development. Build repeatable tools, patterns, and evaluation approaches that raise the quality bar across multiple use cases. Operate with strong judgment in ambiguous environments, balancing immediate technical problem solving with longer term system improvement. Build relationships within the startup ecosystem, serving as a technical partner to both individual customers and the broader community. You'll thrive in this role if you: Have strong software engineering & AI fundamentals. For example, experience as a startup CTO, software engineer, ML engineer, Data Scientist or equivalent. We push the boundaries of the capabilities of AI systems and seek to safely deploy them to the world through our products. AI is an extremely powerful tool that must be created with safety and human needs at its core, and to achieve our mission, we must encompass and value the many different perspectives, voices, and experiences that form the full spectrum of humanity. We are an equal opportunity employer, and we do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, veteran status, disability, genetic information, or other applicable legally protected characteristic. Background checks for applicants will be administered in accordance with applicable law, and qualified applicants with arrest or conviction records will be considered for employment consistent with those laws, including the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, the Los Angeles County Fair Chance Ordinance for Employers, and the California Fair Chance Act, for US based candidates. For unincorporated Los Angeles County workers: we reasonably believe that criminal history may have a direct, adverse and negative relationship with the following job duties, potentially resulting in the withdrawal of a conditional offer of employment: protect computer hardware entrusted to you from theft, loss or damage; return all computer hardware in your possession (including the data contained therein) upon termination of employment or end of assignment; and maintain the confidentiality of proprietary, confidential, and non public information. We're hiring a Senior Machine Learning Scientist to join the team and help build and ship the next generation of that stack. What you'll be doing Train, evaluate, and iterate on ML models and agentic systems for customer feedback, including owning our custom fine tuning pipelines. Run experiments end to end, track results rigorously, and make clear recommendations on what to ship, iterate, or retire. Build and maintain LLM powered features: retrieval pipelines, reranking systems, insight agents, data mining agents, and automated taxonomy generation. Design and run robust evaluation frameworks: build test sets, define metrics, evaluate non deterministic systems, handle class imbalance, and automate checkpoint comparisons. Improve and extend semantic search and retrieval, evolving from embedding based approaches toward more advanced methods. Write production quality code and collaborate closely with Engineering on productionisation, model serving, data pipelines, and monitoring. Work with Product and Commercial teams to translate business needs into practical ML solutions, and support client evaluations and accuracy benchmarking. Mentor team members, review code and research, and bring relevant advances from the literature into the product. What you'll need A deep working knowledge of transformer architectures. Strong PyTorch skills, with the ability to write custom training loops, modify model architectures, and debug issues at the tensor level. Ideally, experience with parameter efficient fine tuning techniques such as LoRA. Extensive experience working with large scale, messy real world text data, including classification, extraction, embeddings, re rankers, clustering, and search. Experience in instruction fine tuning and serving language models, familiarity with frameworks such as vLLM, DeepSpeed, or similar tools. A solid grounding in classical ML and statistics, and the judgement to choose simpler methods when they're the right solution. Practical experience building with GenAI and agentic patterns. Excellent communication skills and confidence translating complex technical concepts for non technical audiences (and vice versa!). Technical curiosity and a keen interest in AI - a love of experimenting to make the most of available technology. High ownership and initiative, with the ability to identify problems, prioritise effectively, and drive solutions forward. It would be a bonus if you MSc/PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computational Linguistics or a closely related STEM field. Experience with reinforcement learning techniques, such as with verifiable reward (RLVR).
