12 Month Contract £750/day Umbrella- Inside IR35 Hybrid 60% office- Locations: Manchester, Leeds or Birmingham SC eligibility essential The Opportunity We re looking for experienced Java Developers to join a major digital programme delivering large-scale, citizen-facing services. This is a great opportunity for a hands-on Java engineer to work with a modern technology stack including Java, Spring Boot, AWS, Kafka and MongoDB, while contributing to the development of highly scalable, secure and resilient digital services. You ll work as part of a multidisciplinary Agile team, collaborating with engineers, architects and delivery professionals to turn complex requirements into reliable, production-ready software. What You ll Be Working With Java & Spring Boot AWS Apache Kafka MongoDB Microservices & REST APIs Automated testing JUnit & integration testing Git & version control CI/CD Agile delivery and modern engineering practices Key Responsibilities Design, develop and maintain high-quality Java applications and services. Build scalable and resilient microservices using Spring Boot. Develop RESTful APIs and integrations with other systems. Work with Kafka and event-driven architectures. Develop and maintain cloud-based solutions using AWS. Work with MongoDB and NoSQL technologies. Write robust automated unit and integration tests. Troubleshoot defects and complex technical issues. Contribute to the performance, resilience and operational stability of live services. Participate throughout the full software development lifecycle. Contribute to Agile ceremonies, code reviews and technical discussions. Collaborate with Software Engineers, Technical Architects and other delivery professionals. Contribute to engineering standards, documentation and continuous improvement. Support production services and participate in 3rd-line support when required. What We re Looking For You ll be a proactive and collaborative Software Engineer with strong commercial experience in Java and Spring Boot. You should be comfortable working in an Agile environment and have experience developing modern, production-grade software. We re particularly interested in developers with experience of: Building scalable and resilient distributed systems. Event-driven architecture and messaging. AWS cloud technologies. Microservices and API development. Automated testing and CI/CD. Production support and troubleshooting. Monitoring, logging and application performance. Docker and/or Kubernetes. Large-scale digital services. Experience within government or public-sector digital programmes would be advantageous, but isn t essential. Why Apply? This is an excellent opportunity for a senior software engineer who enjoys working hands-on with modern Java technologies while providing technical leadership, mentoring and guidance to other developers. You will play a key role in designing, developing and maintaining robust, resilient and high-quality digital services, while helping teams adopt and maintain strong software engineering practices. Key Responsibilities Develop high-quality, maintainable software using Java and Spring Boot. Design and develop reusable libraries, services and APIs. Contribute to the design and delivery of scalable and resilient digital services. Provide technical leadership and guidance across software engineering teams. Review code and technical designs, ensuring engineering standards are maintained. Coach and mentor junior and mid-level developers. Work collaboratively with Architecture, Engineering, Delivery and other technical teams. Design and support system integrations and integration testing. Investigate and resolve complex infrastructure and production issues. Provide 3rd-line support for developed products, including occasional out-of-hours support where required. Promote engineering best practice, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement. Contribute to technical strategy and longer-term product direction. Consider security, accessibility, resilience, availability and operational stability throughout the development lifecycle. Identify technical risks and proactively develop appropriate solutions. Essential Technical Skills You will have strong commercial experience with: Java Spring Boot AWS Apache Kafka MongoDB Microservices and RESTful APIs Automated testing and modern software engineering practices CI/CD and DevOps principles Distributed systems and system integration What We're Looking For We are looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer who can work independently, take ownership and hit the ground running. Ideally, you will have experience in: Leading or providing technical direction to software engineering teams. Mentoring and developing junior and mid-level engineers. Designing systems with scalability, resilience, availability and security in mind. Reviewing and challenging technical designs. Troubleshooting complex production and infrastructure problems. Working within Agile delivery environments. Establishing and promoting engineering standards and best practice. Working with multiple stakeholders and communicating complex technical concepts clearly.
