Cambridge University Press & Assessment
Shaftesbury Road, Cambridge, UK
Job Title: Lead Software Architect
Salary: £68,600 to £91,700
Location: Cambridge, UK – Hybrid
Contract: Permanent
Hours: Full time, 35 Hours Per Week
Are you enthusiastic about shaping technology that delivers impact at scale?
As we continue to evolve our digital platforms to support learners, lecturers and researchers around the world, we are looking to appoint an experienced and motivated Lead Software Architect to join our Academic Technology group here at Cambridge University Press & Assessment, a world‑leading academic publisher and assessment organisation and a proud part of the University of Cambridge.
This is a fantastic opportunity to play a meaningful role in shaping the technical foundations of globally used digital products, ensuring they remain scalable, secure and fit for the future.
About the role
As Lead Software Architect, you will be accountable for owning the software architecture and engineering delivery across a product or platform vertical within our Academic Technology group.
Working at the intersection of solution architecture, product and engineering, you will translate solution designs and product priorities into well‑architected, shippable software, ensuring that technical direction is sound and delivery is sustained from planning through to production and live operation.
You will provide technical leadership across the full engineering lifecycle, including backend and frontend architecture, infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines and operational readiness. While this is not primarily a hands‑on coding role, it requires a strong engineering background and the ability to review code, challenge design decisions, unblock engineers and engage directly where it adds value.
A core aspect of the role is leading the adoption of AI‑enhanced engineering practices. You will shape how teams use AI‑assisted tooling across planning, development and quality assurance, focusing on responsible, practical use that measurably improves delivery quality, throughput and maintainability.
You will work closely with Solution Architects, Product Owners and UX colleagues to ensure requirements are technically feasible, well specified and correctly decomposed, acting as the key technical bridge between solution intent and engineering execution.
Additional responsibilities and accountabilities:
Owning the software architecture for an assigned product or platform area, ensuring solutions support both current delivery and future scalability.
Driving engineering delivery from planning through to production, translating solution designs into implementable engineering plans with clear scope, dependencies and sequencing.
Providing technical leadership and direction to distributed engineering teams, including Far shore, near shore and contract resources.
Removing technical blockers, making pragmatic trade‑off decisions and keeping delivery on track.
Defining and upholding technical standards, patterns and engineering conventions.
Leading the adoption of AI‑assisted software development practices and tooling across engineering teams.
Owning operational readiness, including infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, monitoring and developer experience.
Evaluating technology and tooling choices, including build‑vs‑buy decisions, with clear and defensible rationale.
This position has been classified as a hybrid role, requiring the selected candidate to typically spend 40-60% of their time collaborating and connecting face-to-face at their dedicated location. Aside from our hybrid principles, other flexible working requests will be considered from the first day of employment, including other work arrangements should you require adjustments due to a disability or long-term health condition.
About You
As a senior software architecture or engineering leader, you will have a proven record of owning complex platforms or digital products end‑to‑end. You will be confident operating across technical and non‑technical audiences, bringing sound judgement, strong communication skills and a pragmatic approach to decision‑making.
You will have experience translating product and solution designs into engineering delivery, leading distributed teams, and balancing technical quality with delivery pace in complex environments.
If you meet the above minimum requirements, we encourage you to apply.
Your application will be even stronger if you can also demonstrate experience in content platforms, education technology, modern web technology stacks, or introducing new engineering tools and practices.

At Cast from Clay, we work with organisations that make our societies better for all of us. Are you the person to lead on all things digital for clients campaigning to improve school food, to better conserve the ocean, or to protect children in war? The job We're looking for a digital leader. To us, that means you ll be able to advise clients on how to align their digital presence with their organisational goals. You ll know what good looks like, and you ll have the interpersonal skills to explain and convince others of your views. Ever-curious, you re the kind of person that is always looking for opportunities to make digital deliver for clients. You'll have an instinctive sense of what will (and won't) work on various platforms (websites, data platforms, Substacks, etc.), how they should complement each other and what it means to build an engaged online audience. You'll have that instinct because you've done it before: you know how to set digital/design KPIs and manage a team to meet those targets; you ve run enough website build processes to do it in your sleep, and you know how to identify things a client should do, and explain to them why they should invest in doing them. You ll have a number of responsibilities from day one. You ll take over advising our largest digital clients and be responsible for supporting them in their mission. You ll be the new business lead for any strategy projects that require digital infrastructure that means identifying what needs to change, writing those ideas into proposals, and pitching them. And you will own the digital roadmap for client content-led platforms, ensuring that the content isn t just published but drives audience growth. You ll be managing a team of developers to ensure the final product delivers on the strategic vision. While you may have a technical background, it s worth being clear that this is not a technical role and we are not looking for exclusively technical candidates. The challenge Our clients work in the front line of campaigning to make the world a better place. Their websites are often the first thing funders and policymakers will check to see how legitimate or credible an organisation is. Nothing kills credibility faster than a website that loads slowly, categorises content in a way that no-one outside the organisation understands, or a site where the design is just bad. The challenge is that too many policy websites prioritise internal audiences over external. Rather than thinking what does policymaker X need to see? , the question is what do senior management want to see on the website? This leads to websites that are an output in themselves, rather than websites that lead to outcomes. Your job is to ensure that all our digital workstreams avoid that trap; that they prioritise outcomes (hard to do), over simple outputs (anyone can do). What we are looking for: Someone who prizes outcomes over outputs, and knows how to adapt their approach to achieve best results. Clear leadership of a digital function in a consultancy, a nonprofit, or another relevant organisation. A consultative approach: you re able to identify problems, solutions and opportunities, and convince others of your point of view. Commercial and revenue management experience. Experience managing a team, and an understanding of how to get the best out of different types of people in that team. An understanding of the policy landscape and know how to use digital platforms to move the needle with policymakers, media, and other stakeholders. If you feel like you don t meet 100% of the criteria, please don t let that stop you. If you love the sound of this role and have a strong foundation in building and growing content-led platforms across multiple digital touchpoints, we would love to hear from you. Why us? We re proud to be named one of the Sunday Times Best Places to Work 2026 , and we work hard to keep it that way. The kinds of people that thrive at Cast from Clay are intellectually curious, are open to challenge, and care about the details. Most importantly, they prize clarity of thought. In today s world we are overwhelmed with information and content. Knowing what you think and being able to explain why is, to our minds, one of the most important skills of today. It s worth saying that we don t care what your political views are, as long as you have some. The team has a mix of views, and we view ideological diversity as crucial to our ability to be an effective consultancy. What we offer We offer a competitive benefits package for all our positions, including enhanced parental leave, sabbaticals, and training budgets. Office: we work from our offices in Vauxhall on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You re welcome to use the office more frequently than that if you wish. Home office allowance: we ll make a £150 contribution towards kitting out your home workspace. Flexible working: tell us how you work best and we ll do what we can to make it happen including if you want to spend time working from abroad. Regular team socials: we like spending time together so every few weeks we come up with ideas for things to do together. That s included board games over pizza, ice skating, movie nights, playing a VR game together and going on llama safari at our local city farm. Training: you ll get up to £200 annual training budget to spend on your professional development. Pension: we will pay 5% of your salary, matching the 5% you pay, to make a total of 10% annual contributions. Holidays: we offer 25 days holiday per year, plus bank holidays, and we close the office over Christmas. Bonuses: we offer a 5% new business bonus, and a company wide bonus if annual profit targets are hit. Interested? If this sounds like you, please apply here with: One example of how you have used digital to deliver a real-world outcome (we aren t interested in engagement stats/number of hits) Your CV (no more than 2 pages). We expect to receive a lot of applications for this role. To help yours stand out, please give us a couple of sentences in your email as to why you want to work at Cast from Clay. It s also worth saying that we want to hear your genuine voice, so please don t use AI to write this. Not least because there will be lots of people who will use AI, and it s always amusing for us when a bunch of very different people all write the same thing ! Things to note You need to have permission to work in the U.K. already - we cannot sponsor visas for this role. We are an equal opportunities employer and we are determined to ensure that no applicant or employee receives less favourable treatment on the grounds of gender, age, class, disability, religion, belief, sexual orientation, marital status, or race, or is disadvantaged by conditions or requirements which cannot be shown to be justifiable.

A World-Changing Company Palantir builds the world's leading software for data-driven decisions and operations. By bringing the right data to the people who need it, our platforms empower our partners to develop lifesaving drugs, forecast supply chain disruptions, locate missing children, and more. The Role Backend Software Engineers At Palantir build software at scale to transform how organisations use data. Our Software Engineers are involved throughout the product lifecycle, from idea generation, design, prototyping, and production delivery. You will collaborate closely with technical and non-technical teammates to understand our customers' problems and build products that solve them. We encourage movement across teams to share context, skills, and experience, so you'll learn about many different technologies and aspects of each product. Engineers work autonomously and make decisions independently, within a community that will support and challenge you as you grow and develop, becoming a strong technical contributor and engineering leader. Your day-to-day workflow will vary, adapting to the requirements of our users and the technical challenges that arise. One day, you may find yourself collaborating with other engineers to architect a new system that enables a novel workflow, the next you could be fine-tuning performance to enable low-latency operational outcomes. Our Product Development organisation is made up of small teams of Software Engineers. Each team focuses on a specific aspect of a product and work collaboratively to build cross functional capabilities, streamline user workflows and continuously improve our software's efficiency and reliability. We're hiring engineers who are passionate about solving real-world problems and empowering both developers and end-users to work optimally. If you're motivated to develop reliable, performant, and scalable systems, and to design robust APIs and primitives, this role offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on our products and the people who use them. Frontline Foundry Software Engineers may be offered the opportunity to Frontline, an exclusive program unlike any other. This unique, short-term assignment involves being embedded with customers, allowing you to work directly with users and gain firsthand insight into how our products are used and the challenges our customers face. Unlike traditional engineering roles, Frontline immerses you in complex, ambiguous problems, empowering you to deliver impactful solutions across some of the world's most important industries and institutions. Some of our most successful products were built on the factory floor, addressing real-world problems for the world's most important institutions. These products were developed by some of our most successful product engineers, who began their careers in roles aligned with Frontline responsibilities, gaining a deep understanding of both our technology and our customers. Frontliners operate across a broad spectrum of responsibilities, much like a startup CTO. They work in small teams to own the end-to-end execution of high-stakes projects. This spectrum ranges from discussing architecture and building custom web apps to conducting workshops with users and strategizing with customer executives. No two days are alike, as each day is diverse and impactful.
