They determine whether customers can subscribe, change plans, remain subscribed or return after leaving. Even small failures in this area can result in lost revenue, customer dissatisfaction and increased support costs. We are looking for a Solution Architect to lead the architecture of our payments, billing and subscription domain. You will design and evolve systems supporting millions of customers across multiple countries, currencies and platforms. Working hands-on alongside the Principal Architect and engineering teams, you will set technical direction, improve resilience and maintain a high quality bar across the domain. Advanced use of large language models and AI-assisted engineering is also an important part of the role. We are looking for someone who has built reliable, tested and maintainable systems around models, rather than someone whose experience is limited to using AI tools for individual productivity. Responsibilities: Payments and subscriptions Lead the end-to-end architecture of the subscription lifecycle, including sign-up, trials, plan changes, upgrades, downgrades, proration, pauses, cancellations and win-back. Define and evolve the entitlements model that connects a customer's billing status with the content and services they can access across web, mobile and connected television platforms. Set the architectural direction for payment orchestration across cards, digital wallets, PayPal and other supported payment methods. Improve gateway abstraction, payment routing, retry logic, provider resilience and failover. Lead the architecture for Apple and Google app-store billing, including in-app purchases, store-managed subscriptions, notifications, receipt validation and reconciliation. Support partner and bundle billing models, including telco and retail partnerships, vouchers, gift codes and promotional offers. Improve resilience against involuntary churn through effective retry, account updater, network tokenisation, grace-period and dunning strategies. Partner with Finance and relevant teams on multi-currency pricing, taxation, invoicing, reconciliation and revenue-recognition integrations. Support fraud prevention and chargeback mitigation with internal teams and external providers. Security and compliance Minimise PCI DSS scope through tokenisation and provider-managed payment services, and support relevant compliance assessments. Ensure payment flows meet applicable Strong Customer Authentication and 3-D Secure requirements. Ensure billing and customer-data designs comply with UK GDPR and relevant local data-protection requirements, working with Security and Legal. AI-enabled engineering Apply our standards for using large language models and agentic tools across software design, development, testing and operations. Treat specifications, context, prompts, agent configurations and evaluation criteria as version-controlled engineering artefacts. Design and improve guardrails, evaluations and quality gates for AI-assisted development and any customer-facing AI capabilities. Build production integrations using structured outputs, retrieval, tool use, function calling and Model Context Protocol where appropriate. Make evidence-based decisions about prompting, retrieval, fine-tuning, model selection, latency, cost and token budgets. Help engineering teams use AI coding tools at scale while maintaining architectural consistency and code quality. Technical leadership Work closely with the Principal Architect and participate actively in technical-design and architecture sessions. Provide architectural oversight to product, engineering, QA and support teams working across payments and subscriptions. Review the existing technology landscape, identify weaknesses and recommend practical, evidence-based improvements. Monitor the operational health of the billing platform using measures such as authorisation rates, payment success rates and involuntary churn. Translate business, customer and operational requirements into clear solution designs, use cases and acceptance criteria. Identify technical risks early and maintain clear architecture decisions and supporting documentation. Knowledge and Experience Essential experience Strong software-engineering and solution-architecture experience, with significant depth in payments, billing or subscription platforms. Practical understanding of payment providers, payment orchestration, subscription lifecycles and the failure modes that contribute to revenue loss and involuntary churn. Working knowledge of PCI DSS, PSD2 Strong Customer Authentication, 3-D Secure and relevant data-protection obligations. Experience designing cloud-scale microservices and direct-to-consumer platforms. Strong AWS experience; Azure experience would be beneficial. The ability to translate commercial and operational requirements into clear technical designs. Strong communication skills, with the ability to influence both technical and non-technical stakeholders. The ability to work autonomously within a collaborative Agile delivery environment. Advanced AI engineering experience This requirement will be assessed directly during the recruitment process. We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate: Repositories in which AI tooling has been configured deliberately through project context, specifications, defined agents or roles, and repeatable workflows. Evaluation frameworks that measure the quality and reliability of LLM-supported processes. Production or near-production solutions using retrieval, tool use, function calling or Model Context Protocol. Practical experience managing model failure, security, cost, latency and observability. Sound judgement about when not to use an LLM, and when to choose prompting, retrieval or fine-tuning. The ability to maintain architectural and coding consistency when AI development tools are used across a team. Experience with Claude and Claude Code is strongly preferred. Familiarity with spec-driven development approaches would also be valuable. Candidates should be prepared to discuss work they have built or shipped and the decisions behind it. This could be demonstrated through a repository, technical write-up, case study or other appropriate format. Desirable experience AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Associate or Professional (Strongly desidered). Experience in OTT, streaming or subscription video services. This is a highly influential individual contributor role where you create leverage through technical leadership, partnering with engineers, architects, product, design and senior leaders to solve complex challenges, shape engineering strategy and raise the technical bar across the organisation. In this role as the Senior Principal Engineer (iOS), you will Define and own the long term technical strategy for iOS, ensuring it supports the company's business goals while aligning with the wider architectural vision across mobile, web and platform engineering. Own and evolve engineering standards, reusable patterns and best practices for iOS across the company, creating greater consistency, improving developer experience and enabling teams to build high quality software more effectively. Lead organisation wide technical modernisation programmes that simplify our engineering landscape, improve maintainability and scalability, and enable product teams to deliver faster with confidence. Partner closely with Principal Engineers, Architects and senior engineering leaders to establish a cohesive cross platform strategy, identifying opportunities to share capabilities and architectural approaches while making pragmatic decisions about where platforms should remain distinct. Champion technical excellence through modular, testable and maintainable software design, helping engineering teams adopt practices that improve quality, reliability, performance and long term sustainability. Evaluate emerging technologies and AI enabled engineering practices, identifying where they create meaningful value for developers and customers while balancing innovation with security, operational cost and long term sustainability. Influence technical direction across the engineering organisation through clear communication, compelling technical proposals and trusted relationships with engineers, architects, product, design and executive stakeholders. Mentor and develop senior engineers and members of the Principal Engineering community, while representing the company within the wider engineering community through knowledge sharing, technical leadership and community engagement. Experience establishing engineering standards, technical patterns and best practices, with the ability to influence their adoption across an organisation through technical credibility and collaboration. A proven ability to create alignment across engineering disciplines, working closely with architects, product, design and technology leaders to develop shared technical direction and deliver business outcomes. Strong judgement when evaluating emerging technologies, including AI enabled engineering capabilities, with the ability to identify where they can create genuine value while balancing cost, risk and long term sustainability. Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to adapt your style to engage audiences ranging from hands on engineers to senior and executive stakeholders. As an experienced and pragmatic Principal Software Architect you will define and drive the technical vision for our evolving software ecosystem, shaping how our hardware and firmware platforms integrate with cloud, mobile, and desktop applications. The Principal Software Architect will serve as the focal point for architectural direction, system design principles, and technology strategy. Working closely with domain leads, the Software Program Manager, and the Global Software Manager, you will ensure architectural intent translates into practical, deliverable outcomes. The position combines strategic leadership with hands on technical validation, defining long term architectural direction and validating ideas via lightweight prototyping and experimentation where required. Job Responsibilities 1. Architecture Vision & System Design Define and evolve a clear end to end architecture across firmware/device layer, cloud platform, and mobile/desktop applications. Own target system architecture and design principles, system boundaries and interaction models, and integration patterns across domains. Ensure the architecture supports scalability, maintainability, product evolution across multiple device variants, and alignment with long term business and product strategy. 2. Technology Strategy & Standards Define and maintain a coherent technology strategy across the software organisation. Establish an aligned technology stack across cloud, mobile, desktop, and firmware. Ensure choices reflect industry best practices, team capability and constraints, and long term sustainability. Work collaboratively with domain leads to evaluate trade offs, agree practical adoption paths, and avoid unnecessary fragmentation. 3. Architectural Governance & Decision Authority Act as the accountable owner for architectural integrity across the organisation. Review and sign off major design decisions. Define and enforce architectural standards and guardrails. Ensure consistency across teams without blocking delivery. Where conflicts arise, drive resolution with domain leads and escalates when required. Pragmatic flexibility is expected: allow justified exceptions, capture deviations as technical debt, or feed them into architectural evolution. 4. Current State Assessment & Transformation Roadmap Build a clear understanding of the current software landscape and define a path forward. Deliver documented view of current architecture and technology stack; identified gaps, risks, and constraints; target architecture aligned to business and product direction; migration and/or retirement proposals for legacy systems. Ensure transition plans are realistic, incremental, aligned with delivery priorities, and understood by engineering and product teams. 5. Cross Domain Alignment & Delivery Support Support effective delivery by ensuring system level clarity across teams. Work closely with the SW Program Manager for cross team coordination and dependencies. Collaborate with Product Owners to ensure system level intent is clear before development. Clarify system level behaviour and constraints, define cross platform interactions early, and reduce late stage integration issues. This role does not own delivery execution but enables it through clarity and alignment. 6. Hands On Prototyping & Technical Validation Validate architectural ideas through practical experimentation. Build lightweight proofs of concept where needed. Use modern tooling, including AI assisted development, to accelerate validation. Test feasibility of new technologies and patterns before wider adoption. This role goes beyond documentation and ensures ideas work in practice. 7. Communication & Influence Communicate architectural concepts clearly across all levels of the organisation. Engage with executive stakeholders, engineering leadership, technical leads, and engineers. Translate complex ideas appropriately for each audience and ensure decisions are understood and adopted. Gather and incorporate feedback actively. Key Boundaries The Principal Software Architect does NOT own backlog creation or write user stories, own sprint execution, act as a project or program manager, or replace domain technical leadership. The Principal Software Architect DOES own system level architecture and design principles, architectural decision making and governance, and enable delivery through clarity, not control. Authority & Escalation Accountable for architectural decisions and standards. Expected to challenge and guide domain teams constructively. Resolve directly with domain leads where possible; escalated conflicts go to the Global Software Manager. Success Measures Clear, adopted target architecture across domains. What we are looking for (Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education) Required Experience 15+ years of software engineering experience, with significant time in architectural roles. Proven designing distributed systems across cloud and application layers. Strong experience with at least one major cloud platform (Azure, AWS, or GCP), ideally across multiple. Experience integrating hardware or embedded systems with cloud based platforms. Strong understanding of modern software architecture patterns and best practices. Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction across multiple teams. Excellent communication skills across both technical and non technical audiences. Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Experience in hardware software or IoT environments. Exposure to mobile and SDK based architectures. Experience modernising or migrating legacy systems. Familiarity with AI assisted development approaches. Track record of delivering pragmatic, implementable architecture (not just conceptual design). Travel & Working Environment Hybrid role with strong on site presence expected (typically 3 days per week in Bristol). High level of engagement with engineering teams required.
