Overview The energy transition drives an unprecedented growth in demand for and generation of electricity. To accommodate this growth, the capacity of transmission systems is projected to grow three-fold. High voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems will connect remote and offshore renewables, interconnect energy markets and reinforce AC grids. Converter stations convert AC to DC and vice versa. The control and protection systems are central to the operation of HVDC valve technology, ensuring efficient, safe, and reliable performance of power electronic valves and peripheral equipment. GE Vernova's Grid Systems Integration business line offers control and protection solutions for both voltage sourced converter (VSC) and line-commutated converter (LCC) HVDC valve technologies to meet the transmission planning needs of utilities, system operators, developers and industrial clients worldwide. The control & protection algorithms are key to enabling HVDC transmission systems' functionality, capabilities and performance. GE Vernova's HVDC NPI team requires Principal Engineers who act as technical consultants, ensure customer confidence, review and enhance design practices, gate-keep technical reviews, apply lessons learned, lead complex technology improvements, engage with quality reviews and cost optimization exercises within and across domains. GE Vernova is currently looking for an experienced technical specialist to join us as Principal Engineer - Control & Protection Systems/Application. Key Responsibilities Serve as a recognized technical authority in Voltage Sourced Converter HVDC control & protection algorithm solutions, internally and externally, and act as a technical advisor to senior leadership and Consulting Engineers. Contribute to and drive internal and external standardization, coordinate working group activities and represent GE Vernova in IEC/CIGRE and similar bodies, task forces and industry committees. Support internal stakeholders and Consulting Engineers to develop and maintain a strategic HVDC Control & Protection Algorithms technology roadmap. Suggest areas for technological advancement and recommend approaches/programs to pursue. Participate in Patent Evaluation Board (PEB) to protect technology and company IP. Oversee R&D programmes from conception through industrialisation, integrating new technology into production and ensuring project delivery. Chair and act as technical authority in technology and product development gate reviews. Collaborate across GE Vernova businesses to promote technology synergies. Lead/support project teams in addressing identified project challenges in focused technical areas. Support project technical tendering and delivery for new solutions; assist quality teams on major issues and act as technical authority in root cause analysis. Provide technical consultation on product problems across the business, including supplier and field support; perform technical rescues when needed. Mentor and coach identified high-potential engineers within one's business lines. Chair design reviews for components, sub-assemblies and key deliverables at tendering and contract execution stages. Support Consulting Engineers in governance and trainings to reinforce proper execution of design review guidelines. Consult with and support the Chief Engineer's Office in executing technical objectives to implement best practice technologies, methods and process adherence. Qualifications / Requirements The position requires deep technical understanding of technologies and design techniques for high-availability, real-time, flexible control systems. The candidate should understand communication and computing platform technologies and how to translate this into value for GE Vernova customers. This requires a strong foundation in both R&D and project engineering, with demonstrated depth and recognition as a domain expert in large-scale, high-reliability real-time control systems, and the ability to apply state-of-the-art technology to complex challenges. About us Founded in 2017, Wayve is the leading developer of Embodied AI technology. Our advanced AI software and foundation models enable vehicles to perceive, understand, and navigate any complex environment, enhancing the usability and safety of automated driving systems. Our vision is to create autonomy that propels the world forward. Our intelligent, mapless, and hardware-agnostic AI products are designed for automakers, accelerating the transition from assisted to automated driving. In our fast paced environment big problems ignite us-we embrace uncertainty, leaning into complex challenges to unlock groundbreaking solutions. We aim high and stay humble in our pursuit of excellence, constantly learning and evolving as we pave the way for a smarter, safer future. At Wayve, your contributions matter. We value diversity, embrace new perspectives, and foster an inclusive work environment; we back each other to deliver impact. Make Wayve the experience that defines your career! About the Team Portal is the platform that connects Wayve to the outside world; handling data exchange with partners, surfacing AI insights, and enabling the commercial deployment of Wayve's autonomy stack to OEM partners globally. The team operates as a startup within a scale up: with its own infrastructure, its own DevOps, and a high autonomy operating model independent from Wayve's core engineering org. The Role We're looking for a Platform Engineer to own and evolve the cloud infrastructure and developer tooling that underpins the entire Portal engineering team. This is a broad, hands on platform engineering role, not a narrow specialisation. You'll work across cloud infrastructure, RBAC/IAM, CI/CD, Kubernetes and developer productivity. You'll be the person application developers come to when they need to move faster, more safely, and you'll build the systems and guardrails that make that possible. What You'll Do Design, build and maintain cloud infrastructure, CI/CD and developer tooling (primarily Azure) using IaC (Terraform) across development, staging, and production environments. Own and evolve RBAC/IAM across both cloud/infrastructure and application/product layers for a multi tenant Portal environment. Build and improve CI/CD pipelines to increase developer velocity, reliability and deployment safety. Support and improve Kubernetes based deployment workflows and platform services. Build internal tools and observability capabilities that help engineers deliver performant, reliable software at scale. Participate in a support/on call rotation; respond to incidents, support engineers, and contribute to root cause analysis. Apply practical security and networking knowledge to harden the platform and coach application developers on best practices. What We're Looking For Strong hands on cloud infrastructure experience, ideally Azure, with production Terraform/IaC experience. Strong RBAC/IAM knowledge at cloud/infrastructure level; experience with application/product level IAM or multi tenancy is highly valuable. Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines. Security and networking fundamentals: you are a hands on builder, not just a reviewer. Experience as part of a support or on call rotation. A strong communicator who can coach and guide application developers, not just build in isolation. A product mindset: you think about the developer experience and build tools that genuinely improve how the team works. High autonomy and ownership: you take responsibility for outcomes in a fast moving team. Nice to Have Experience working with multiple cloud providers or cross cloud IAM across Azure, AWS and/or GCP. Background in developer experience (DX) or internal tooling. Experience in a startup or high growth engineering environment. Security certifications are a plus but not required. This is a full time role based in our office in London. At Wayve we want the best of all worlds so we operate a hybrid working policy that combines time together in our offices and workshops to fuel innovation, culture, relationships and learning, and time spent working from home. We operate core working hours so you can determine the schedule that works best for you and your team. We understand that everyone has a unique set of skills and experiences and that not everyone will meet all of the requirements listed above. If you're passionate about self driving cars and think you have what it takes to make a positive impact on the world, we encourage you to apply. At Wayve we're committed to creating a diverse, fair and respectful culture that is inclusive of everyone based on their unique skills and perspectives, and regardless of sex, race, religion or belief, ethnic or national origin, disability, age, citizenship, marital, domestic or civil partnership status, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, pregnancy or related condition (including breastfeeding) or any other basis as protected by applicable law. DISCLAIMER: We will not ask about marriage or pregnancy, care responsibilities or disabilities in any of our job adverts or interviews. However, we do look to capture information about care responsibilities, and disabilities among other diversity information as part of an optional DEI Monitoring form to help us identify areas of improvement in our hiring process and ensure that the process is inclusive and non discriminatory.
