Job Description Main Purpose of the Job The Earlham Institute is seeking a versatile full-stack Research Software Engineer (RSE) to join the team behind COPO (Collaborative OPen Omics). COPO is a production-deployed metadata and data-brokering platform that has been developed and operated at the Institute since 2015. COPO underpins some of the largest biodiversity genomics programmes attempted to date, having brokered more than 80,000 samples from over 4,800 species to public repositories such as the European Nucleotide Archive, with automated validation, expert curation and full audit trails. The successful candidate will join the small engineering team that builds and operates COPO, contributing across the full stack -frontend interfaces, APIs, and the services that connect them to the platform's validation, curation and submission pipelines. Data visualisation, dashboards and API design will be at the centre of the role, but the post is deliberately broad: COPO supports a range of research communities and projects, and the work varies with the needs of those the platform serves. This is a broadly scoped full-stack role with metadata validation, translation, visualisation and API design as its primary focus. It suits an engineer who enjoys turning complex scientific data into clear, reliable, well-documented interfaces that researchers and the wider community can depend on. Being a senior, hands-on role, you will own significant components of the project end to end, make day-to-day architectural decisions, and drive delivery to time. Key Relationships Internal: COPO Team Lead / Group Leader (direction, prioritisation, line management); the COPO development team of fellow engineers and frontend developers (collaboration, code review, and mentoring); EI bioinformaticians and research scientists (scientific and metadata requirements); Scientific Computing / IT infrastructure teams (compute, storage and platform services); and project managers / programme coordinators (planning, reporting and effort estimates). External: genomics and biodiversity programmes and projects that COPO supports; EMBL-EBI / ELIXIR services such as ENA and BioSamples; other public repositories and registries such as Zenodo and DataCite; metadata-standards communities including RO-Crate, ISA, MIxS, Darwin Core and Bioschemas; and the wider open-source community and downstream COPO users. Apply good practice in accessibility, responsive design and information design so that outputs are usable by researchers and the public alike. APIs and backend services Develop, document and maintain RESTful APIs that expose metadata in multiple formats for internal tools and external consumers. Integrate frontend and portal services with COPO's validation, curation and submission pipelines. Ensure APIs are performant, versioned, secure and well documented so third parties can build against them with minimal support. Full-stack engineering and platform contribution Contribute across the COPO codebase: frontend, backend and supporting services as a flexible member of a small engineering team. Write clean, tested, maintainable code with appropriate use of version control, code review, CI/CD and containerisation (Git, Docker). Help deploy and operate COPO instances, working with colleagues on deployment, monitoring, backup and reliability. Collaboration, standards and support Work closely with the technical lead and engineering colleagues to extend the platform and its metadata standards. Help add support for new data types and metadata schemas, and reflect these in the interfaces and APIs you build. Support research users onboarding onto the platform, including documentation, tutorials and responsive help. Produce clear technical documentation and contribute to open-source releases under permissive licences. As agreed with line manager, any other duties commensurate with the nature of the role. Build reporting and summary views that are reproducible and auditable, including snapshots for governance and reporting. PLP Group
Senior Full-Stack Developer (TypeScript) - Frontend FocusJob detailsEngineeringLondon, Lisbon, New York, Munich, RemoteFull-time$75,000 USD - $130,000 USDWe're looking for a senior full-stack developer with a strong frontend focus who cares deeply about details, performance, and user experience. You'll help us build applications that remain fast, consistent, and reliable even when backend systems misbehave. This role is ideal for someone who treats UX not as polish but as core engineering quality: thoughtful loading states, resilient error handling, predictable behavior, and a system-level mindset about how frontend and backend interact. You will work across the stack (TypeScript, React, PostgreSQL), but your superpower is crafting robust, snappy, and user-friendly interfaces backed by clean, reliable data flows. What You'll Do Design and build high-quality React applications with TypeScript. Create UIs that are fast, responsive, and consistent under real-world conditions. Ensure the frontend behaves gracefully under failure (timeouts, partial data, offline states, race conditions, etc.). Build and maintain reliable APIs and database interactions (PostgreSQL). Optimize perceived performance: caching strategies, optimistic updates, skeleton/loading states, and rendering efficiency. Establish and maintain systematic UX patterns across the product. Collaborate closely with product, design, and backend engineers to ship features end-to-end. Improve developer experience: shared components, linting, testing, and documentation. Help define and enforce standards for consistency, observability, and reliability across the stack. What We're Looking For Must-have Senior-level experience building production web apps. Strong expertise in TypeScript across frontend and backend. Deep experience with React and modern frontend architecture. Experience designing systems that handle failure states gracefully. Strong understanding of async flows, caching, retries, and state management. Experience with PostgreSQL and API design. Eye for detail: spacing, loading behavior, transitions, edge cases, and consistency. Proven ability to make apps feel snappy and reliable. Pragmatic mindset: you balance ideal architecture with shipping value.Nice-to-have Experience optimizing performance in complex SPAs. Familiarity with TailwindCSS or utility-first styling. Experience with observability, logging, and error tracking. Experience designing component libraries or design systems. Experience working on data-heavy or real-time applications. How You Work You think in systems, not just components. You assume things will fail - and design for that. You care about consistency across the product, not just your feature. You sweat the details that make software feel reliable. You communicate clearly and collaborate well with others. You take ownership of problems from UX to database when needed.Example Problems You Might Work On Making UI state consistent when multiple async requests resolve out of order. Designing a loading/error strategy that feels seamless to users. Optimizing rendering and data fetching for large datasets. Ensuring graceful degradation when APIs are slow or temporarily unavailable. Building reusable UI patterns that enforce consistent behavior across the app.Why Join Us Competitive salary + performance incentives Equity aligned with long-term growth High ownership and direct exposure to leadership Remote-first with global team Health and sports benefits Yearly international team off-sites Work on products where quality and reliability matter. Shape the architecture and UX standards of our applications. Collaborate with experienced engineers in a pragmatic environment. Make meaningful improvements to performance and user experience. How to Apply Send us: A short introduction. Links to projects or code you're proud of. Anything that demonstrates your attention to UX, performance, or reliability. We're especially interested in engineers who can explain how they design frontend systems that stay robust when everything else goes wrong.

The team works across product, platform, infrastructure, and operations to improve existing services, modernize core capabilities, and deliver systems that are understandable, maintainable, and dependable in production. We are looking for engineers who care deeply about how backend systems behave under real-world conditions: how they fail, how they recover, how they scale, and how other engineers can safely extend them over time. THE JOB We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer with strong production Rust experience to design, build, modernize, and operate backend services and platform capabilities. This is a hands-on senior individual contributor role for someone who brings strong systems design judgment, excellent debugging ability, and a practical approach to evolving existing systems. This role is backend-first. You will work primarily on service architecture, APIs, data flows, reliability, observability, deployment quality, and production readiness. You should be comfortable working through ambiguity, decomposing complex problems, making thoughtful trade-offs, and using AI-assisted and agentic coding workflows to move faster while maintaining high engineering standards. WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING Design, build, and operate production backend services using Rust and other strongly engineered backend technologies. Own backend components from design through deployment, observability, incident learning, and ongoing maintenance. Modernize existing systems incrementally, reducing technical debt while protecting reliability and business continuity. Develop clean, maintainable, production-grade code with strong attention to correctness, testability, performance, and operational behavior. Debug complex production and pre-production issues across services, data flows, infrastructure, and deployment pipelines. Define practical service boundaries, API contracts, data models, and integration patterns that support long-term maintainability. Strong backend engineering experience building APIs, services, distributed systems, data-intensive systems, or platform capabilities. Strong architectural and systems design judgment, including the ability to reason about service boundaries, reliability, scalability, performance, and maintainability. Excellent debugging, problem decomposition, and root-cause analysis skills. Experience evolving, refactoring, or modernizing existing systems without unnecessary rewrites. Ability to write clean, maintainable, production-grade code and hold a high bar for testing, review, and documentation. Operational awareness in production environments, including observability, incident response, deployment safety, performance, and reliability concerns. Experience with cloud infrastructure such as AWS or comparable platforms. Experience with CI/CD, deployment automation, and operational tooling. High ownership, autonomy, curiosity, and pragmatic decision-making under ambiguity. Ability to communicate technical decisions simply, including the reasoning, trade-offs, risks, and expected outcomes. Preferred Qualifications Experience with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) tools, vector databases, embeddings, search infrastructure, or AI-enabled developer/product workflows. Experience designing resilient integrations across multiple services, systems, or data stores. Experience improving developer workflows, build systems, testing practices, or operational maturity. Experience mentoring engineers through code review, design review, pair programming, or technical coaching. Familiarity with security, privacy, and compliance considerations in backend systems. Experience working closely with product and UX partners to connect backend decisions to user outcomes. YOU (BEHAVIOURAL SKILLS) You are naturally curious and enjoy understanding how systems work. You like simplifying complex problems, finding the practical path forward, and making technology easier for teams and users to work with. You are pragmatic rather than dogmatic. You care about clean architecture and maintainable code, but you also understand delivery trade-offs and know when to make incremental progress. You are comfortable with ambiguity, take ownership beyond your immediate tasks, and can explain your technical decisions clearly. You actively use AI-assisted and agentic coding tools to move faster, but you do not outsource your judgment. You review, test, challenge, and improve AI-generated work with the same standards you would apply to any production system.
