Cambridge University Press & Assessment
Shaftesbury Road, Cambridge, UK
Job Title: Lead Software Architect
Salary: £68,600 to £91,700
Location: Cambridge, UK – Hybrid
Contract: Permanent
Hours: Full time, 35 Hours Per Week
Are you enthusiastic about shaping technology that delivers impact at scale?
As we continue to evolve our digital platforms to support learners, lecturers and researchers around the world, we are looking to appoint an experienced and motivated Lead Software Architect to join our Academic Technology group here at Cambridge University Press & Assessment, a world‑leading academic publisher and assessment organisation and a proud part of the University of Cambridge.
This is a fantastic opportunity to play a meaningful role in shaping the technical foundations of globally used digital products, ensuring they remain scalable, secure and fit for the future.
About the role
As Lead Software Architect, you will be accountable for owning the software architecture and engineering delivery across a product or platform vertical within our Academic Technology group.
Working at the intersection of solution architecture, product and engineering, you will translate solution designs and product priorities into well‑architected, shippable software, ensuring that technical direction is sound and delivery is sustained from planning through to production and live operation.
You will provide technical leadership across the full engineering lifecycle, including backend and frontend architecture, infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines and operational readiness. While this is not primarily a hands‑on coding role, it requires a strong engineering background and the ability to review code, challenge design decisions, unblock engineers and engage directly where it adds value.
A core aspect of the role is leading the adoption of AI‑enhanced engineering practices. You will shape how teams use AI‑assisted tooling across planning, development and quality assurance, focusing on responsible, practical use that measurably improves delivery quality, throughput and maintainability.
You will work closely with Solution Architects, Product Owners and UX colleagues to ensure requirements are technically feasible, well specified and correctly decomposed, acting as the key technical bridge between solution intent and engineering execution.
Additional responsibilities and accountabilities:
Owning the software architecture for an assigned product or platform area, ensuring solutions support both current delivery and future scalability.
Driving engineering delivery from planning through to production, translating solution designs into implementable engineering plans with clear scope, dependencies and sequencing.
Providing technical leadership and direction to distributed engineering teams, including Far shore, near shore and contract resources.
Removing technical blockers, making pragmatic trade‑off decisions and keeping delivery on track.
Defining and upholding technical standards, patterns and engineering conventions.
Leading the adoption of AI‑assisted software development practices and tooling across engineering teams.
Owning operational readiness, including infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, monitoring and developer experience.
Evaluating technology and tooling choices, including build‑vs‑buy decisions, with clear and defensible rationale.
This position has been classified as a hybrid role, requiring the selected candidate to typically spend 40-60% of their time collaborating and connecting face-to-face at their dedicated location. Aside from our hybrid principles, other flexible working requests will be considered from the first day of employment, including other work arrangements should you require adjustments due to a disability or long-term health condition.
About You
As a senior software architecture or engineering leader, you will have a proven record of owning complex platforms or digital products end‑to‑end. You will be confident operating across technical and non‑technical audiences, bringing sound judgement, strong communication skills and a pragmatic approach to decision‑making.
You will have experience translating product and solution designs into engineering delivery, leading distributed teams, and balancing technical quality with delivery pace in complex environments.
If you meet the above minimum requirements, we encourage you to apply.
Your application will be even stronger if you can also demonstrate experience in content platforms, education technology, modern web technology stacks, or introducing new engineering tools and practices.

About Glover Glover Labs is building the agentic platform for legacy software modernization. The world's largest enterprises run on decades-old mainframe systems - COBOL, RPG, PL/I - processing trillions of dollars daily. These codebases are too complex, too sprawling, too deeply regulated, and too poorly documented for existing agentic coding tools to touch in any meaningful way. The gap isn't intelligence - it's context. Glover closes that gap. Our platform builds a holistic understanding of large legacy estates, delivers an objective assessment of the right path forward, and provides a spec-driven workflow that lets product owners and engineering teams modernize quickly, confidently, and with low risk. What used to require an 8-month, $800K systems integrator engagement to even assess - Glover delivers understanding in days and transformation outcomes in weeks. We're a small team by design - founded by three ex-Google engineers, backed by top-tier venture investors, and entering our go-to-market phase targeting Fortune 1000 enterprises across financial services, insurance, and government. We operate as AI natives. Every person at Glover uses AI tooling relentlessly to move fast, gain leverage, and create machines that create machines. We expect everyone who joins to share that orientation and push it further. The Role This is Glover's first dedicated GTM hire. You won't inherit a playbook - you'll write it. We are focused on landing a small number of highly engaged global design partners, not running a high-volume pipeline. That means this role is about depth, not breadth: crafting bespoke partnership structures, embedding with senior stakeholders at the world's largest organizations, and proving Glover's value in real production environments. The GTM organization will grow over time, but right now, you are the person leading all aspects of go-to-market for Glover Labs. Above all, we're looking for someone who is extremely thoughtful about how to gain access to the world's largest companies at the right levels - someone who studies the org chart, maps the power structure, finds the angle, and builds relationships with patience and precision. This isn't transactional selling. It's strategic, high-conviction business development that requires creativity, perseverance, and the drive to keep pushing when the first ten doors don't open. What You'll Do Own the full sales cycle from outbound prospecting through close, targeting CIOs, CTOs, and VPs of Engineering at Fortune 1000 financial services, insurance, and government organizations. Structure and negotiate strategic design partnership agreements that position Glover for deep access and long term platform adoption. Build Glover's channel and alliance strategy with global systems integrators and hyperscaler partners, positioning us as the upstream context layer for modernization engagements. Serve as the primary external voice of Glover - in executive meetings, at conferences, and in analyst briefings. Translate field signal into product direction, pricing strategy, and competitive positioning alongside the founding team. Roll up your sleeves across everything: outbound sequences, deck customization, contract redlines, event logistics. There is no "that's not my job." Use AI tooling aggressively to accelerate your own workflows - prospecting, research, outreach, deal analysis, content creation. Who You Are 7+ years selling enterprise software platforms (cloud, AI/ML, developer tools, data platforms) into large, regulated industries - financial services, insurance, or government strongly preferred. Experience selling into Fortune 500 or Global 2000 accounts with comfort navigating multi stakeholder, long cycle deals. Direct experience at or alongside hyperscalers or large systems integrators, with a working understanding of channel and alliance motions. You've worked at an early stage startup or led a new market launch inside a larger organization - you know what it means to operate without established processes. You can hold a credible technical conversation with a CTO about mainframe architecture, modernization approaches, and where AI fits. Exceptional communicator with a consultative, relationship first approach. Bias toward action, extreme ownership, zero ego. AI native - you already use LLMs, agents, and automation in your daily work. Why This Role Founding GTM leader at a well funded Seed stage startup with three ex Google founders and a deeply talented engineering team. One of the largest, most durable markets in enterprise software - legacy modernization is a $300B+ problem every Fortune 1000 company must solve. Founding team equity with strong early investor conviction. The chance to shape not just how Glover goes to market, but what the company becomes.

Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems. About The Role Anthropic's Safeguards team is responsible for the systems that allow us to deploy powerful AI models responsibly - and the data infrastructure underneath those systems is foundational to getting that right. The Safeguards Data Infrastructure team owns the offline data stack that underpins our safeguards work: the storage layer for sensitive user data, the tooling built on top of it, and the interfaces that let the rest of the Safeguards organization access that data safely and ergonomically. As Engineering Manager of this team, you'll be responsible for ensuring full portability of our safeguards data stack across an expanding set of deployment environments, building privacy-preserving data interfaces that enable ML and training workflows, and driving compliance with data regulations including HIPAA. This is a role at the intersection of infrastructure engineering, data privacy, and enterprise product requirements - and it sits at a critical juncture as Anthropic scales into new cloud environments and geographies Responsibilities: Lead and grow a team of engineers delivering the data infrastructure and tooling that powers Anthropic's safeguards capabilities Own the strategy and execution for porting the safeguards offline data stack - including PII storage and tooling - across new cloud and deployment environments as Anthropic expands Build and maintain privacy-safe data APIs and interfaces that enable ML and training workflows while respecting data retention and access constraints Drive tooling and architecture decisions that maximize data retention within the bounds of our privacy and compliance requirements Manage privacy incident response processes and partner with compliance teams on regulatory requirements (e.g. HIPAA, EU privacy regulations) Collaborate closely with enterprise customers and product teams on zero data retention offerings, working balancing safety needs with robust enterprise data contracts Independently own and drive multiple workstreams, including planning, execution, and cross-team coordination Coach, mentor, and support the career development of your direct reports, helping them set and achieve their professional goals Partner with recruiting to attract, hire, and retain strong engineering talent You May Be a Good Fit If You: Have 4+ years of front-line engineering management experience Have a track record of leading teams that build and operate data infrastructure at scale Have hands-on software engineering experience as an individual contributor prior to moving into management Have a strong understanding of data privacy principles, PII handling, and compliance frameworks Are comfortable driving technical decisions in an ambiguous, fast-moving environment with competing priorities Have experience working cross-functionally across infrastructure, product, and compliance or security teams Are clear and persuasive communicators, both in writing and in person Strong Candidates May Also: Have experience with multi-cloud or multi-region data portability, particularly in regulated environments Have built privacy-preserving data pipelines or interfaces for ML workloads Have experience with enterprise data contracts or zero data retention architectures Have explored novel approaches to data processing under strict access constraints, such as in-memory storage and compute for sensitive data Have a passion for building diverse and inclusive teams The annual compensation range for this role is listed below. For sales roles, the range provided is the role's On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. Annual Salary: $405,000-$485,000 USD The annual compensation range for this role is listed below. For sales roles, the range provided is the role's On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. Annual Salary: £325,000-£390,000 GBP Logistics Education requirements: We require at least a Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience. Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices. Visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this. We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team. Your safety matters to us. To protect yourself from potential scams, remember that Anthropic recruiters only contact you email addresses. In some cases, we may partner with vetted recruiting agencies who will identify themselves as working on behalf of Anthropic. Be cautious of emails from other domains. Legitimate Anthropic recruiters will never ask for money, fees, or banking information before your first day. If you're ever unsure about a communication, don't click any links-visit directly for confirmed position openings. How We're Different We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact - advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI - rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills. The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences. Come work with us! Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.
