Cambridge University Press & Assessment
Shaftesbury Road, Cambridge, UK
Job Title: Lead Software Architect
Salary: £68,600 to £91,700
Location: Cambridge, UK – Hybrid
Contract: Permanent
Hours: Full time, 35 Hours Per Week
Are you enthusiastic about shaping technology that delivers impact at scale?
As we continue to evolve our digital platforms to support learners, lecturers and researchers around the world, we are looking to appoint an experienced and motivated Lead Software Architect to join our Academic Technology group here at Cambridge University Press & Assessment, a world‑leading academic publisher and assessment organisation and a proud part of the University of Cambridge.
This is a fantastic opportunity to play a meaningful role in shaping the technical foundations of globally used digital products, ensuring they remain scalable, secure and fit for the future.
About the role
As Lead Software Architect, you will be accountable for owning the software architecture and engineering delivery across a product or platform vertical within our Academic Technology group.
Working at the intersection of solution architecture, product and engineering, you will translate solution designs and product priorities into well‑architected, shippable software, ensuring that technical direction is sound and delivery is sustained from planning through to production and live operation.
You will provide technical leadership across the full engineering lifecycle, including backend and frontend architecture, infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines and operational readiness. While this is not primarily a hands‑on coding role, it requires a strong engineering background and the ability to review code, challenge design decisions, unblock engineers and engage directly where it adds value.
A core aspect of the role is leading the adoption of AI‑enhanced engineering practices. You will shape how teams use AI‑assisted tooling across planning, development and quality assurance, focusing on responsible, practical use that measurably improves delivery quality, throughput and maintainability.
You will work closely with Solution Architects, Product Owners and UX colleagues to ensure requirements are technically feasible, well specified and correctly decomposed, acting as the key technical bridge between solution intent and engineering execution.
Additional responsibilities and accountabilities:
Owning the software architecture for an assigned product or platform area, ensuring solutions support both current delivery and future scalability.
Driving engineering delivery from planning through to production, translating solution designs into implementable engineering plans with clear scope, dependencies and sequencing.
Providing technical leadership and direction to distributed engineering teams, including Far shore, near shore and contract resources.
Removing technical blockers, making pragmatic trade‑off decisions and keeping delivery on track.
Defining and upholding technical standards, patterns and engineering conventions.
Leading the adoption of AI‑assisted software development practices and tooling across engineering teams.
Owning operational readiness, including infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, monitoring and developer experience.
Evaluating technology and tooling choices, including build‑vs‑buy decisions, with clear and defensible rationale.
This position has been classified as a hybrid role, requiring the selected candidate to typically spend 40-60% of their time collaborating and connecting face-to-face at their dedicated location. Aside from our hybrid principles, other flexible working requests will be considered from the first day of employment, including other work arrangements should you require adjustments due to a disability or long-term health condition.
About You
As a senior software architecture or engineering leader, you will have a proven record of owning complex platforms or digital products end‑to‑end. You will be confident operating across technical and non‑technical audiences, bringing sound judgement, strong communication skills and a pragmatic approach to decision‑making.
You will have experience translating product and solution designs into engineering delivery, leading distributed teams, and balancing technical quality with delivery pace in complex environments.
If you meet the above minimum requirements, we encourage you to apply.
Your application will be even stronger if you can also demonstrate experience in content platforms, education technology, modern web technology stacks, or introducing new engineering tools and practices.

About Us Artificial intelligence scaled on a bet - that bigger models, more identical chips, and more data would keep delivering. As problems grow more complex and the requirements of intelligence more diverse, that bet is breaking down. The next era belongs to heterogeneous intelligence: diverse models on diverse chips, each with distinct strengths, co-evolving into systems of capability unreachable by any single model or accelerator. Callosum is the Intelligent Systems company. We built the infrastructure to make that possible. Our co-evolution engine optimises simultaneously across workflows, agents, and silicon. We launched in early 2026 showing orders of magnitude improvements in performance and a shift in the cost-performance frontier that no single chip or model provider can provide. We believe intelligence comes from the system, not the model. We are scientists and engineers solving what others consider impossible. If you thrive on hard problems, and are passionate and energised by the scale of the challenge, we would love to hear from you. About the Role As a Staff Platform Engineer, you will design and build the infrastructure that makes our heterogeneous intelligence API scalable and efficient in production at high throughput and rapidly growing scale. This spans the full platform stack: API design and reliability, Kubernetes-based deployment, observability, and cloud infrastructure. The role sits at the intersection of platform engineering, backend infrastructure, and DevOps. As the ideal candidate, you combine deep expertise in backend system design and cloud-native infrastructure, and is comfortable owning hard problems in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment. You will be working closely with the hardware and orchestration teams. The role has strong growth potential toward technical leadership in platform architecture as we expand our heterogeneous compute infrastructure. Responsibilities Design and build a scalable, robust API platform capable of handling rapidly growing and diverse workloads across heterogeneous compute infrastructure Own Kubernetes-based deployment, and reliability for API services in production Own platform observability - metrics, tracing, and alerting across the full platform Manage cloud infrastructure (AWS) and deployment pipelines Work closely with the hardware team to maintain and expose hardware deployment capabilities through the API layer Qualifications Strong experience designing and operating high-throughput APIs (REST or gRPC) with high performance requirements Strong hands-on experience with Kubernetes in production - deployment, autoscaling, failure recovery, networking; comfortable owning a cluster, not just deploying to one Solid cloud infrastructure fluency (AWS preferred) and hands-on experience with infrastructure as code Solid understanding of observability tooling Nice to Have Experience with developer tooling Experience as a user or builder of AI-native developer products What We Offer Competitive Salary: £101,000 - £192,000, determined by skills and experience Equity & Ownership Private healthcare We offer Visa sponsorship and relocation benefits to hire the best in the world We work in person at our London office. You'll have the tools, space and setup to do your best work, and if you have specific needs, just tell us We're committed to building an inclusive workplace where everyone feels welcome, and believe in equal opportunities for all.

Astrid is a gaming studio that brings together accomplished worldbuilders and game developers to create multiplayer creative experiences. Our first title is a cooperative open-world life simulation set in a natural world inspired by the wonder of Studio Ghibli and the playfulness of Nintendo. This is a living world shared by a small group of players that are given creative tools and freedom to evolve the world through the connections they form and the choices they pursue. Astrid spans the US, the UK, and beyond. We are taking a fully remote approach, but have regular in-person meetups to synchronize, huddle and build our culture. Astrid is seeking an experienced Senior Level Designer to join us as a contractor with an option to join our team in a full time position later. In this role, you will work with our Design and Art teams to craft memorable spaces, encounters, and game moments that bring our world to life. The Role We are looking for a Senior Level Designer who can collaborate with our creative, design, and art teams to turn our open world demo into a fully playable map driven by exploration and environmental storytelling. You will be responsible for shaping how players move through a natural world, designing spaces that reveal narrative through layout, pacing, and player discovery rather than exposition. This role requires someone who can think beyond set pieces and build environments that feel systemic, immersive, and worth exploring. The game launches with a single large biome. Rather than building a vast map, our focus is on density, readability, and creating a place players come to know intimately over time. Within that biome, we aim to craft a rich variety of distinct locations that each feel unique in mood, composition, and identity, avoiding repetition. You'll apply the compositional principles that make Breath of the Wild feel masterfully structured, using terrain, landmarks, and sightlines to shape exploration across a richly detailed biome roughly the size and density of one of its zones. You'll be designing two types of playspace: Wild areas are playgrounds - spaces where players explore, gather, and encounter wildlife, and where the terrain itself becomes part of the play - full of opportunities for emergent physical play and satisfying traversal Settled areas are player-shaped - outposts and settlements that players build up, expand, and personalise over time, and which need to evolve spatially as they grow. You will need to consider the following critical elements of the game: The gameplay is Nintendo-like. Kinetic, joyful and hands-on; players run, jump, climb, throw, and bounce through the world. This isn't a "walk and interact" game, and the level design needs to reflect that at every turn. The world is dynamic. Systems will change the landscape over time - areas will gradually come alive and evolve as players invest in them. Every space you design needs to support transformation without breaking the underlying spatial logic. The world is shared. A small group of players inhabits this world together. Moments of discovery need to land whether solo or with friends, terrain needs to be fun to traverse as a group, and layouts should give players reasons to split up and regroup. Must Have - First and foremost, you are an exceptional level designer Demonstrated ability to own and drive the spatial composition of an open world exploration space A portfolio demonstrating strong open-world spatial composition - including terrain, landmarks, traversal routes, and player sightlines Experience shaping terrain using landscape tools or heightmap workflows, as well as designing and composing the spaces Comfortable rapidly greyboxing terrain and spaces to explore ideas before systems, art, or content are final 5+ years as a level designer, or at least one shipped open-world title Unreal Engine 5 experience (or similar transferable game engine skills) Comfortable wearing several hats as part of a small team Comfortable working across disciplines and in a fully remote team Based in the UK or a UTC 2 adjacent time zone Nice to Have - Any additional talents are very welcome 5+ years Unreal Engine 5 experience Experience working on creative sandbox or systemic games where players shape environments and return to the same spaces repeatedly, requiring levels that support long-term engagement and evolving player activity Design experience across any of the following: Environmental storytelling Spaces that evolve over time Data-driven world population Procedural generation systems Multiplayer or co-op games Life-simulation or cosy games Exposure to pre-production and pipeline-building Great compensation package and equity Private health insurance Pension Unlimited vacation days. We trust our team! Flexible remote work hours as long as team members deliver results We are committed to continuing to expand our benefits and perks to support our team.
