London, England, United Kingdom Software and Services Join the Apple Cloud Object Store (ACOS) team as a Software Engineer with a focus on security. The ACOS team, which is part of Apple Services Engineering organisation, is one of the most critical infrastructure teams at Apple, storing and serving petabytes of data across Apple's services. The ASE organization builds and operates the cloud infrastructure underpinning Apple's services, bringing together compute, storage, networking, and security into a unified Apple Cloud platform. In this role you'll work at the intersection of distributed systems engineering and security - building the authentication, authorisation, and encryption foundations that protect data at exabyte scale. Description The security challenges in a large-scale cloud object store are deep and varied. You will work on problems such as: designing and evolving authentication systems to meet modern security standards; implementing and improving encryption-at-rest schemes with robust key lifecycle management at scale; building IAM policy enforcement at high throughput; driving compliance for a multi-region storage platform; and conducting threat modeling for a system handling hundreds of thousands of requests per second. You'll also contribute to broader storage engineering work - durability, availability, multi-tenancy, and performance - making this a well-rounded SWE role with a security-first mindset. Responsibilities Join a highly collaborative team that values mutual support and security-first engineering. We prioritise continuous learning and career growth, with real ownership of the security posture of ACOS. Own and contribute to security infrastructure projects across authentication, authorisation, and encryption - building platforms that the rest of the storage org consumes. Implement and evolve authentication systems to meet modern security standards: improving credential security, integrating with other Apple services, and ensuring consistent auth across storage products. Build and maintain encryption-at-rest infrastructure: key lifecycle management, encryption standard upgrades, and ensuring cryptographic coverage at scale. Participate in threat modeling for new and existing features; embed security reviews into the design and launch process. Identify, scope, and lead projects that span security, reliability, isolation, scalability, and maintainability - this is a broad SWE role, not a pure security role. Work across teams to identify improvement areas, build consensus, and participate in roadmap and security planning discussions. Collaborate with Apple's Security and Privacy orgs, serving as the storage org's point of contact for security matters. Minimum Qualifications Solid backend software engineering experience with strong computer science fundamentals: networking, distributed systems, and security concepts. Good understanding of authentication and authorisation: familiarity with protocols such as SigV4, OAuth2, mTLS, or IAM-style policy systems. Understanding of cryptographic fundamentals: symmetric encryption, key hierarchies, certificate management, or secret management systems. Experience driving complex projects end-to-end and collaborating across teams. Preferred Qualifications Experience with IAM systems, STS/short-lived credentials, or policy-based access control. Hands-on experience with encryption infrastructure: key rotation, envelope encryption, or integrating with secret managers (e.g., HashiCorp Vault, AWS KMS, or equivalent). Familiarity with compliance frameworks such as PCI-DSS or SOX in a cloud infrastructure context. Experience with threat modeling methodologies or conducting security design reviews. At Apple, we're not all the same. And that's our greatest strength. We draw on the differences in who we are, what we've experienced and how we think. Because to create products that serve everyone, we believe in including everyone. Therefore, we are committed to treating all applicants fairly and equally. As a registered Disability Confident employer, we will work with applicants to make any reasonable accommodations. Overview Location: Sheffield (2 days per week/ Hybrid) Reporting to: VP of Engineering The Team: 2 Data Scientists, 1 Data Engineer IntelliAM is an intelligent asset management company specialising in industrial IoT data. We ingest high-frequency factory and sensor data, apply machine learning techniques, and present high value actionable insights to analysts and customers. We are building a cutting-edge UNS aligned Industrial IoT data platform with a highly scalable architecture to handle our next phase of growth. We require a delivery-focused technical lead to own the data engineering domain, re-architect and build our pipelines from the ground up, and mentor a small but talented team. The Mission You will not be maintaining a legacy system; you will be architecting the new one. You will take ownership of the data flows within the platform, designing a robust architecture that supports both real-time operational views and deep historical analysis. The Tech Stack Primary Objectives (First 6-12 Months) Re-platforming: Own the redesign and rebuild of the data transformation layer (post-event bus) in Databricks. Move from ad-hoc scripts to software engineering standards (CI/CD, testing, modular code). Modelling Implementation: Support the implementation of the "Unified Name Space" (UNS) across the data estate, to include schema and path standardisation; machine hierarchies and semantic relationships; and methodologies for validation and processing of data against contracts. Enablement: Establish a stable data serving layer for Grafana and Analytics (via Databricks/MLflow), unblocking the Data Science team. Mentorship: Upskill the existing team in good practices (dbt, git workflows, SQL optimisation, data modelling). Experience & Background Pragmatic Architect: Capable of making trade-offs between "academic perfection" and "business value". They must align architecture to the 80/20 rule. Technical Authority: Comfortable discussing and constructively challenging architectural decisions with the Head of Software and VP of Engineering. Must be able to justify changes to the core architecture and challenge existing thinking. Mentor vs. Manager: Willing to sit and pair-program with junior engineers. They should measure their success by the team's outcomes, not simply their own. A full "Team Manager" is not required; this is not a pastoral-focused hire. Business Translator: Able to explain to non-technical stakeholders why changes are required, and what their impacts may be. Similarly, the ability to provide a bridge between technical approaches and limitations, and business requirements. Industrial / IoT Context: Highly desirable. You should be comfortable with the chaotic nature of sensor data, time-series continuity, and the physical reality of the machines we are modelling. Alternative: Experience in high-volume data systems that face similar challenges (duplicated or missing data, spiky load, variable schemas, etc.) would be beneficial. Skills Advanced Data Engineering: Proven experience building data platforms on Azure. You know Databricks inside out - not just how to write a notebook, but how to architect a Lakehouse, manage clusters, and optimise costs. Data Modelling Proficiency: You understand that data engineering is more than moving JSON blobs. You have strong opinions on schema design, data standardisation, and ideally have worked with graph data or hierarchical models. Code Quality: You treat data pipelines as software. You use git, CI/CD, and automated testing. You can teach these practices to a junior engineer. Communication: You can explain to a business stakeholder why architectural decisions matter for their bottom line, and you can debate architectural trade-offs with Software Engineers. Why Join? Autonomy: You have the support of leadership to make architectural decisions. You aren't fighting for permission to fix tech debt; you are being hired specifically to fix it. Impact: Your work directly enables the Data Science team to stop cleaning data and start building better predictive models. Modern Stack: We are moving toward a cutting-edge IIoT stack (UNS + Digital Twins), offering you the chance to work on industry-leading patterns. What you'll get 5 weeks paid annual leave, plus UK bank holidays Tax efficient stock options (subject to scheme rules and eligibility) Workplace pension with employer contributions, in line with UK auto-enrolment legislation (subject to eligibility and scheme terms) Salary Sacrifice EV Scheme (subject to eligibility) Training and professional development opportunities This is a full-time role. Due to the collaborative and mentoring nature of this role, regular in-person attendance is required. The team collaborates in person from our Sheffield office twice weekly for planning, workshops and team development, providing valuable opportunities for mentoring, feedback and connection. We recognise the importance of flexibility and are open to discussing reasonable flexible working arrangements in line with business needs. Join the Team! If your background doesn't exactly align with the job description, but you possess transferable skills or experience that could be a strong match, we encourage you to highlight this in a cover letter. We're committed to personal growth as our company evolves, so if you're excited to be part of that journey, we'd love to hear from you. We are an equal opportunities employer and are committed to creating an inclusive workplace. We welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK. We will process your personal data as part of the recruitment process in accordance with applicable data protection laws. We don't just build software; we obsess over our users' goals to deliver solutions that truly matter. Our mission is simple: to attract the brightest talent, people like you, to Elevate the Craft and do the most impactful work of your career. To enhance our team we are seeking an experienced Security Engineer who thrives at the intersection of engineering and security. In this role, you'll own the security posture of a platform used by millions, partnering closely with developers to build secure systems from the ground up. Position Summary: In this role, you will have the opportunity to do the most impactful work of your career, elevating your craft while contributing to a team that values lifelong learning. As a Security Engineer, you are a critical guardian of the platform that powers video knowledge management for global universities and businesses. You won't be working in an "ivory tower." Instead, you will elevate the Craft of security by embedding it directly into the development lifecycle. You will bridge the gap between high level compliance (ISO 27001, TX RAMP) and the day to day realities of high velocity engineering, ensuring our posture is pragmatic, scalable, and built on Clarity Over Complexity. You'll also have opportunities to contribute to other initiatives that directly advance our core values and support you in elevating your craft. How You'll Contribute: Design Secure Systems: Partner with engineering teams to conduct threat modeling. You'll ensure security is "baked in" to new features from the first line of code, not "bolted on" at the end. Drive Proactive Defense: Build and maintain automated scanning, penetration testing frameworks, and monitoring tools within our AWS CI/CD pipelines to catch vulnerabilities before they reach production. Own Governance & Compliance: Lead the technical implementation of controls for ISO 27001 and TX RAMP, turning complex regulatory requirements into simple, actionable engineering standards. Lead Incident Response: Act with ownership during security events. You'll lead investigations and root cause analysis, providing the Collective Wisdom needed to prevent future occurrences. Mentor the Team: Champion a "security first" mindset. You'll host workshops that empower developers to write secure code and understand modern attack vectors. How We Thrive: You'll work with a team of talented engineers with a variety of areas of expertise, from devops to design, architecture to accessibility. The team's experience level ranges from seasoned developers with well over a decade in industry to junior developers and contractors who are growing their roles and impact. The Foundation for Success: Cloud Security Mastery: You have a proven track record of securing AWS environments (IAM, Network Security, Infrastructure as Code) at scale. Code Level Proficiency: You can read and write code (C#, Python, or similar). You don't just find bugs; you suggest the secure code alternative. Automation Mindset: You prefer a script over a manual check. You have experience with SAST/DAST and vulnerability management platforms. Pragmatic Compliance: You understand that security must support business velocity. You've implemented controls in regulated environments without slowing down the mission. Experience: 5+ years in security engineering or software development with a security focus. What Sets You Apart: Experience securing video streaming architectures or high scale backend services. A history of leading incident response in a remote first environment. Deep expertise in OWASP Top 10 and secure API design. What Success Looks Like: Within 6 Months: You complete a security audit of our current CI/CD pipeline and establish relationships with lead developers. Within 1 Year: Automate one major manual security check and contribute to our TX RAMP/ISO certification technical evidence. Your Legacy: Full ownership of the security roadmap; measurable reduction in "security debt" during the architectural review phase. Join Panopto and play a key role in shaping the security foundation of a platform used by millions. If you love threat modeling, automating defenses, guiding engineering teams, and turning compliance standards into practical, scalable security practices, you'll feel right at home here. $140,000 - $150,000 a year Total Rewards: The salary range for this position is $140,000 - $150,000 USD per year. Your work here has a global impact, and we prioritise work life balance, offering flexibility to enable you to perform your best. Join us to experience a rewarding career where your potential is celebrated, and your journey to excellence begins. About the Job This role is ideal for someone who wants to shape how a modern enterprise becomes truly AI native. We already use AI in delivery and engineering, and we have strong guardrails and governance in place. Now, we're looking for a leader who can help us scale across data acquisition, ingestion, storage, and AI powered consumption within a secure, multi tenant environment. You'll evolve our existing data platform (AWS, Snowflake, S3, Postgres, event driven services) into a product facing, AI ready foundation, while partnering across disciplines and leading a team in a supportive, high trust environment. If you're passionate about data, excited about AI, and motivated by meaningful impact, this role gives you the autonomy, influence, and visibility to shape how AI is adopted across the company. Key Responsibilities 1. Data platform evolution Take our current AWS/Snowflake/S3/Postgres setup and enable AI/RAG, product consumption, and multi tenant access. Work with the Technical Architect to keep this aligned with our event driven and security model. 2. Data acquisition & ingestion Design multi source ingestion (APIs, scraping/crawling, file drops, crowdsourcing, agent based pipelines). Make it observable, repeatable, and documented so research and analytics can plug in new sources without rework. 3. AI as a consumption layer Build LLM/RAG endpoints on top of our data and content as a service. Expose these services to Data Insights to enable users to ask, explore, and generate insights - not only download reports. 4. Partnering with Analytics Give the research teams clean, modelled, well documented data. Turn one off work into scheduled, production jobs. 5. Guardrails, governance, and quality Keep AI generated code within SDLC, code review, and security bounds. Ensure data and AI services are audited and tenant aware. 6. Team leadership Lead a small technical team (data/AI/ingestion). Promote AI native ways of working across product, data, and engineering. Manage and mentor your engineering team, fostering a collaborative, high performance environment with excellent productivity. Demonstrate hands on technical excellence while modelling accountability, critical thinking, and AI first practices. Set clear objectives, provide regular feedback, conduct performance reviews. 7. Delivery & Accountability Take full accountability for the delivery of high quality software products, owning both successes and challenges. Drive outcome focused delivery planning and execution, measuring success by business impact rather than effort or hours invested. Proactively identify and mitigate risks, making critical decisions to keep projects on track. 8. Technical Direction & Architecture Guide technical direction, establish best practices, and ensure architectural decisions support scalability, maintainability, and business goals. Be a hands on contributor for architecting and building well tested, maintainable applications. Optimise tech stacks and development workflows to maximise team productivity. 9. Agile & Product Collaboration Ensure Agile ceremonies (sprint planning, retrospectives, stand ups) are followed and continuously refine Agile practices to optimise team performance. Collaborate with product owners and stakeholders to develop and maintain technical roadmaps that align with business strategy. Work with product owners to build and maintain a prioritised backlog that balances business value, technical debt, and innovation. 10. Quality & Continuous Improvement Enforce rigorous quality standards including test driven development (TDD), code reviews, and automated testing. Ensure that security best practices are followed to the highest standards. Foster a culture of experimentation, learning, and continuous improvement. Use data and metrics to drive decisions and demonstrate improvement in team velocity, quality, and business outcomes. The Ideal Candidate 1. Data first mindset You understand how data arrives in an organisation: via APIs, files, partner feeds, human/crowd sourced inputs or from the internet and that each of those has different latency, quality, and governance needs. You're comfortable with: AWS (core services, IAM basics, networking good practice) Snowflake (or similar cloud data warehouse) Amazon S3 for landing/staging data Postgres (including JSONB/dynamic fields) Event driven patterns for efficient and effective data pipeline management 2. AI positive, not AI sceptic This role is for someone who: is genuinely enthusiastic about AI/LLMs/agents, is actively learning (even in their own time), can translate AI concepts (RAG, agents, tools, function calling, model evaluation, private models) into working, secure services. 3. Enterprise aware We have clients, tenants, and compliance, so you will: design with security, PII and tenancy in mind, accept governance and SDLC gates as part of making AI safe, and still find a way to deliver fast. 4. Builder + Manager You're happy to open the IDE and build the pipeline, but you can also run a small team, set standards, review code, and coach people into AI native ways of working. Benefits Enhanced Stakeholder Pension Contribution 25 days annual leave Health, Life Insurance + EAP Wellbeing Support Eligible for Annual Bonus Scheme Long Service Awards ClassPass Membership Enhanced Family Leave Up to £1,000 per year for personal development & training Season Ticket Loan Flexible/hybrid Work Environment Cycle to Work Scheme Free Eye Test We are a super friendly team that thrives on collaboration and supporting each other. We cultivate an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their best work, helping us to realise our ambitious growth goals and mission. Our values of Integrity, Respect, Ambition and Innovation show up loud and proud in everything we do. Our hybrid working structure includes spending around two days a week at our Head Office in Holborn, London.
