Currently, the environmental tests include shock & vibration, temperature and EMC, but could include others in the future, as the needs of the business change. Some of the testing will require travel to other locations off site and possibly overnight stays. Flexibility in working hours is also required, with early starts, late finishes and some weekend working required.

Office-based in Colchester, Essex, you will work closely with our electronics, board layout and other mechanical and thermal engineers at all the different stages of board development, for both rugged and more benign environments. Our design team operates in a small company environment which means that most design are completed by an individual engineer. As a result, each engineer rapidly becomes involved with all aspects of the product design and development. Short design timescales are an important part of our development strategy, which also results in our engineers being involved in many different product designs quite quickly.
Essential Skills / Experience:
You must be a very practical, hands-on person, comfortable using a variety of hand and power tools.
You will be a good problem-solver, with the ability to reason independently and reach good engineering solutions.
You must be educated to HNC/HND or NVQ level 3 standard with industry experience of designing small or precision components, ideally for electronic product packaging or similar environments.
You must be independent and a self-starter, able to plan and carry out your work with little supervision and with the ability to deliver effective results in short timescales.
Familiarity with SolidWorks is essential.
Desirable, but not Essential, Skills / Experience:
An appreciation of change control procedures, e.g. ECO/ECN systems.
A good understanding of tolerances and their effects in real-world production.
Some awareness of thermal management techniques, especially in electronic product design.
Previous involvement in environmental testing, e.g. shock, vibration or thermal tests.
A background in product development for airborne or ground vehicle equipment.
Benefits:
Very competitive salary.
Optional stakeholder pension scheme (with a generous company contribution).
Life assurance.
Private health insurance.
Relocation allowance where appropriate.
Engineering Technician
The Job:
You will work closely with our other mechanical and thermal engineers, as well as with the electronics engineers, at all the different stages of product development. You will also be involved in the testing of new products and maintenance of existing designs.
Essential Skills / Experience:
Practical, hands-on skills, comfortable using a variety of hand and power tool.
Educated to ONC standard with industry experience of designing small or precision components, ideally for electronic product packaging or similar environments.
Independent, but willing to learn and able to take on new tasks.
Familiar with SolidWorks.
Desirable, but not Essential, Skills / Experience:
An appreciation of change control procedures, e.g. ECO/ECN systems.
An understanding of tolerances and their effects in real-world production.
Previous involvement in environmental testing, e.g. shock, vibration or thermal tests.
A background in product development of electronic systems.
Benefits:
We offer a very competitive salary, with an optional stakeholder pension scheme (with company contribution). There are also optional life assurance and private health insurance schemes.
Qualifications Candidates should have an engineering qualification to degree/HND/HNC level, be able to demonstrate practical experience of some functional or environmental testing of computer-based equipment, and have an electronic hardware bias. They are expected to be familiar with some or all of the following:
Building and configuring computer systems from parts (e.g. motherboard, data storage, cooling, power supply).
Understanding computer systems at a functional level.
Installing and configuring Windows and Linux operating systems and drivers.
Creating and amending software scripts.
Understanding and meeting the requirements of military and commercial test specs for environmental testing.
Performing vibration and shock tests using electro-dynamic shaker test equipment. Understanding the Design requirements for test fixtures required for mounting test items to the aforementioned equipment.
Diagnosing and finding practical resolutions to technical problems.
Familiarity with VME, VPX, CompactPCI or AMC single board computer systems would be an advantage.
You will be part of a small team with a high level of responsibility for your own work, so you will need to have the ability to work to demanding timescales, and be able to maintain a high level of enthusiasm and commitment to the projects. The successful candidate should have an ability to organise and prioritise their own work, be methodical, well disciplined, have attention to detail and show good inter-personal skills.
Benefits
Competitive salary package. Company supported private pension scheme. Non-contributory private health insurance scheme
Mechanical/Thermal Engineer
The Job
The Mechanical/Thermal Engineers provide key design inputs to the electronics hardware team, and are also very involved in the verification stages of product development, as well as providing on-going support to the design teams in all three countries and to the UK production team. Among the engineerÃÂs responsibilities are the following:
Designing, developing and testing mechanical parts for our products and for fixtures and other items used in-house.
Designing, developing and testing thermal solutions for both convection and conduction cooled products.
Liaising with the hardware and PCB design engineers to agree optimal layout and construction of the boards.
Simulating and analysing thermal performance of the products, and implementing any necessary corrections.
Thermal and mechanical testing of new products and components.
Developing and improving our mechanical and thermal design procedures and practises.
Maintaining awareness of new technologies.
Qualifications:
Candidates should ideally be engineering graduates in a relevant discipline, but consideration will be given to those who have significant appropriate experience without this qualification. They must be able to demonstrate practical involvement in the design and development of electronic product packaging, and should be familiar with some or all of the following:
SolidWorks for mechanical design.
CFDesign or Flotherm for thermal analysis and design.
Small component mechanical design, with particular regard to tolerancing.
Designing thermal solutions for both convection cooled and conduction cooled electronic products.
Analysis of thermal characteristics at component level, and at board level in excess of 60W.
General production machining processes.
In addition to technical skills, the candidate must be independent and self-motivated but also be able to interact with other engineers both locally and overseas. He or she will be a primary point of contact for thermal and mechanical issues so must be able to provide assured and accurate guidance to colleagues, during both the design and testing stages of product development.
Benefits:
Very competitive salary package with relocation allowance where appropriate. Company-supported private pension scheme. Non-contributory private medical and health insurance schemes.
