This is a full-time, permanent role offering a salary of 51,000 plus a comprehensive benefits package . This role requires full-time onsite presence in Barrow-in-Furness. Due to the nature of the work, it is a requirement to obtain Security Check (SC) clearance. To obtain SC clearance, the successful applicant must have resided continuously within the United Kingdom for the last 5 years and sole UK passport holder. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting and maintaining Unix/Linux-based systems, responding to technical issues, performing routine maintenance and patching, and working closely with users to resolve system-related issues. A strong background in Solaris (10 & 11; ideally 8/9), scripting (Bash or Python), and system troubleshooting is essential. Key Skills Required: Proven experience in Unix/Linux system administration Solaris 10 & 11 (ideally 8/9 also) Scripting in Bash and/or Python Troubleshooting hardware/software/network issues VMware and system monitoring tools (e.g. vROps) Strong customer service and communication skills Candidates must also be willing to provide on-call support on a rota basis. ULCC also supports over 54,000 distance learning students in association with the University of London International Programmes The Role  As the Senior Systems Administrator, you will assist and make recommendations in the planning and development of the University of London Computer Centre technical infrastructure & managed hosting service. You will have involvement with the day to day operational running of ULCC services to ensure they achieve published performance levels and will be involved with the design and specification of new projects.  You will have responsibility for specific projects for University of London Computer Centre and its customers run in accordance with the established ULCC project management methodology.   To be considered for this role you must have previous experience supporting customer systems in a service delivery environment and experience in a similar customer/student facing role. You will have good practical and theoretical understanding of the range of technical architectures in existence, especially Linux (predominantly RedHat), Windows Server (2008, 2012) & Unix (predominantly Sun Solaris), and a good working knowledge and theoretical understanding of computer networking including IP networking, routing protocols and network security. You will have a practical and theoretical understanding of mainstream applications including Apache, Tomcat, Java, Oracle, MySQL, LDAP, Shibboleth.
