University of Oxford, Mathematical Institute
Oxford, UK
About the role
We are seeking to appoint to an exciting new Full-Stack Development Lead role on a permanent, full time basis. This is a pivotal post within our established and highly impactful IT Team, which has been designed to ensure that our IT and software development operations run smoothly.
As a senior member of the IT team, you will support service delivery by leading, driving and delivering longer-term technical projects to meet deadlines and by maintaining agreed service levels. This new role builds our IT team’s resilience at a senior technical level; you will report to the Head of IT who, amongst other management duties, acts as the overall IT architect and also leads, drives, and delivers various technical projects. As a senior leader, you will also act as a mentor to more junior team members to assist them in developing existing skills and gaining new ones.
This post presents a great opportunity to take ownership of various projects previously overseen by the Head of IT, which could include: maintenance and further development of the departmental website; redesigning and reimplementing the examinations database; and developing various helper and automation scripts for the maintenance and automation of our IT systems. You can find a full list of potential projects outlined in the job description document.
Although you will be primarily based in central Oxford, the department are open to a hybrid working arrangement at typically two days per week from home.
About you
We are looking for candidates who are able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the principles and technical processes of full-stack web application development, including substantial development experience with an expert level in at least one of Python, PHP or Ruby on Rails, and substantial frontend development experience (e.g. using JavaScript, CSS, HTML).
You will have an honours degree or equivalent experience, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, in particular the ability to work very closely with a variety of end users including senior academic and professional services staff, students, visitors and collaborators, and to communicate deeply technical concepts to non-technical audiences. You will be highly self-motivated and enjoy working both independently and as an effective member of a small team, with a light management touch.
We proudly hold a departmental Athena SWAN Silver Award and an institutional Race Equality Charter Bronze Award, which guide our progress towards advancing racial and gender equality. As part of our strategic aim to improve staff equality and diversity, we would particularly welcome applications from BAME candidates, who are currently under-represented in positions of this type within the department.
Application Process
If you wish to speak to someone informally about this post, please contact Dr Waldemar Schlackow (Head of IT) [ mailto:waldemar.schlackow@maths.ox.ac.uk ] or Dr Keith Gillow (Director of IT and Physical Resources) [ mailto:keith.gillow@maths.ox.ac.uk ]. Ideally hybrid, fully remote considered You are an early career Software Engineer with some knowledge of Python and SQL related languages. You are keen to progress in a full stack environment which will include, REST APIs and microservice architecture, containers and cloud technologies (e.g. Kubernetes, Docker, AWS) and Linux development/operations. It would be great if you understand some of these technologies, but don t worry if you don t have them all, we will provide training and support. About our stack: We develop web applications and REST APIs with a microservice architecture. Our stack currently includes Python and PostgreSQL with a range of popular support tools and frameworks. We deploy containerised environments on Kubernetes (AWS) using GitLab pipelines and Helm, and we automate our testing and deployment pipelines wherever possible. Although we are doing mostly backend work, we also do some frontend development, using Typescript and Vue.js, and there is a strong DevOps aspect to our work. We are open minded about what we use and always strive to improve and use the right tools for the job. What will you do: The core aim of the Development Team is to provide departments across the business with the software they need to work as effectively as possible. This covers a wide variety of projects, from developing tools to help with the design, validation, and visualisation (both GIS and graph) of our network, designing storage and versioning solutions, implementing tools for the tracking of our build or improving our retail customer journey. Being Agile is key to what we do: the business is evolving quickly, and we are working closely with other teams to assist them in various projects. This gives us plenty of room for taking initiatives and making a difference. Where will you go: When you join, we will show you a clear progression route via training and technology learning that enables growth to next level Software Engineering roles up to Senior and Principle. We believe in creating a friendly, diverse, supportive, and inclusive environment, with a strong focus on personal development through code reviews, developers meetings, mentoring and training. Who are we: We bring digital happiness and brilliant broadband to rural communities We are a dynamic internet service provider. We bring broadband infrastructure where there is little provision. Our internal and external stakeholders range from a village of potential customers, small businesses, thru to councils, investors and financiers. We have a small army of field engineers and multiple complex systems.

The Team Alternative Discretionary Technology is a small and agile team that works very closely with the front-office teams in the UK as well as the US for Man's discretionary strategies that operate in non-traditional markets. We develop and support a number of platforms for underwriting and ongoing management of private market assets like buy-to-rent housing portfolios, real estate debt and credit risk. As a developer in Alt Discretionary Tech, you will develop and deploy features for every system that we've built as you communicate requirements and issues with the front-office teams in a way that is markedly different to dealing with exchange-listed securities. Dealing with Real Assets means working with tangible things like properties that have real-world physical and human interactions to cater for in our financial models. Quant technology in private and alternative markets is a rapidly growing space in which Man is demonstrably on the cutting edge so there are opportunities here to make significant contributions in shaping this alongside the investment teams. Our Technology The target technology stack is on Linux with the majority of the code written in Python, using the full scientific stack like pandas and scikit-learn. We are heavy users of Man's own high performance proprietary database ArcticDB, alongside traditional RDBMS'. Generative AI forms a growing part of our estate as it rapidly evolves and we find more use-cases in automation for our stakeholders. All our code is deployed using Kubernetes and modern cluster computing frameworks. Working Here Man Tech has a small company, no-attitude feel. It is flat structured, open, transparent and collaborative, and you will have plenty of opportunity to grow and have enormous impact on what we do. We are actively engaged with the broader technology community. We host and sponsor London's PyData and Machine Learning Meetups We open-source some of our technology. See We regularly talk at leading industry conferences, and tweet about relevant technology and how we're using it. We organise regular social events, everything from photography through climbing, karting, wine tasting and monthly team lunches We have annual away days and off-sites for the whole team As well as PC's and Macs, in our office you'll also find numerous pieces of cool tech such as a make-space, tech lending library and music room with guitars and a piano. We offer competitive compensation, a generous holiday allowance, various health and other flexible benefits. The Role As a Quant Developer at AHL you will be working hand-in-hand with our Quant Researchers. Your challenges will be varied, and will involve implementing new trading strategies, building new research frameworks and quant libraries, prototyping new data feeds, development of new portfolio construction techniques or building risk analysis tools. The Team Quant Developers at AHL are all part of our broader technology team, members of a group of over sixty individuals representing eighteen nationalities.
