Applications deadline: The final date for submissions is 25 April 2025 . However, we review applications on a rolling basis and encourage early submissions. ABOUT APOLLO RESEARCH The capabilities of current AI systems are evolving at a rapid pace. While these advancements offer tremendous opportunities, they also present significant risks, such as the potential for deliberate misuse or the deployment of sophisticated yet misaligned models. At Apollo Research , our primary concern lies with deceptive alignment, a phenomenon where a model appears to be aligned but is, in fact, misaligned and capable of evading human oversight. Our approach focuses on behavioral model evaluations, which we then use to audit real-world models. We also combine black-box approaches with applied interpretability. In our evaluations, we focus on LM agents, i.e. LLMs with agentic scaffolding similar to AIDE or SWE agent . We also study model organisms in controlled environments (see our security policies ), e.g. to better understand capabilities related to scheming. At Apollo, we aim for a culture that emphasizes truth-seeking, being goal-oriented, giving and receiving constructive feedback, and being friendly and helpful. If you're interested in more details about what it's like working at Apollo, you can find more information here . ABOUT THE TEAM The current evals team consists of Mikita Balesni , Jérémy Scheurer , Alex Meinke , Rusheb Shah , Bronson Schoen , Andrei Matveiakin, Felix Hofstätter, and Axel Højmark . Marius Hobbhahn manages and advises the team, though team members lead individual projects. You would work closely with Rusheb and Andrei, who are the full-time software engineers on the evals team, but you would also interact a lot with everyone else. You can find our full team here . WE ARE LOOKING FOR THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTICS IN A STRONG CANDIDATE Responsibilities: Maintain and extend our internal library for building and running language model evaluations. Work closely with researchers to understand what challenges they face. Rapidly prototype, iterate on and ship useful features to increase their productivity. Collaboratively iterate on the vision and priorities for the internal software stack. Advocate for good software design practices and the general health of the codebase. Keep up-to-date with the latest approaches to implementing evals frameworks and LLM scaffolding (e.g. open-source projects and research papers). If interested, you can also run well-scoped research projects yourself, e.g. build an evaluation or do capability elicitation for an existing evaluation. Required Skills: At least 2 years of FTE-equivalent experience in software development with Python. Strong candidates may also have: Note that we welcome and value applications with different backgrounds. We encourage you to apply even if none of the following apply to you. Experience in rapidly iterating on software products in close collaboration with users. For example, you have built software tools for internal or external users for 1+ years. Strong communication skills and user/researcher empathy to understand and address their needs. You enjoy close in-person collaboration and pair programming. Experience building organization-internal tools. For example, you have led the efforts of an organization-internal tool for at least one 6-month project. Representative projects: Implement an internal job orchestration tool which allows researchers to run evals on remote machines. Build out an eval runs database which stores all historical results in a queryable format. Implement LLM agents to automate internal software engineering and research tasks. Design and implement research tools for loading, viewing and interacting with transcripts from eval runs. Establish internal patterns and conventions for building new types of evaluations within the Inspect framework. Optimize the CI pipeline to reduce execution time and eliminate flaky tests. We want to emphasize that people who feel they don't fulfill all of these characteristics but think they would be a good fit for the position nonetheless are strongly encouraged to apply . We believe that excellent candidates can come from a variety of backgrounds and are excited to give you opportunities to shine. EVALS TEAM WORK. Conducting evaluations on frontier models and publishing the results either to the general public or a target audience such as AI developers or governments, for example, our work in OpenAI's o1-preview system card . Creating model organisms and demonstrations of behavior related to deceptive alignment, e.g. exploring the influence of goal-directedness on scheming. Designing and evaluating AI control protocols. We have not started these efforts yet but intend to work on them starting Q2 2025. LOGISTICS Start Date: Target of 2-3 months after the first interview. Time Allocation: Full-time. Location: The office is in London, and the building is shared with the London Initiative for Safe AI (LISA) offices. This is an in-person role. The evals team focuses on the following efforts: As a software engineer, you work closely with all of our research scientists by building a high-quality software stack to support all of the following efforts. We have recently switched to Inspect as our primary evals framework. If you want to prepare for the SWE role, we recommend playing around with Inspect. Conceptual work on safety cases for scheming, for example, our work on evaluation-based safety cases for scheming Building evaluations for scheming-related properties , such as situational awareness or deceptive reasoning. In rare situations, we may consider partially remote arrangements on a case-by-case basis. Work Visas: We can sponsor UK visas. BENEFITS Salary: a competitive UK-based salary. Flexible work hours and schedule. Unlimited vacation. Unlimited sick leave. Lunch, dinner, and snacks are provided for all employees on workdays. Paid work trips, including staff retreats, business trips, and relevant conferences. A yearly $1,000 (USD) professional development budget. We want to emphasize that people who feel they don't fulfill all of these characteristics but think they would be a good fit for the position nonetheless are strongly encouraged to apply . We believe that excellent candidates can come from a variety of backgrounds and are excited to give you opportunities to shine. Equality Statement: Apollo Research is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We value diversity and are committed to providing equal opportunities to all, regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation. How to apply: Please complete the application form with your CV. The provision of a cover letter is optional but not necessary. Please also feel free to share links to relevant work samples. About the interview process: Our multi-stage process includes a screening interview, a take-home test (approx. 2 hours), 3 technical interviews, and a final interview with Marius (CEO). The technical interviews will be closely related to tasks the candidate would do on the job. There are no leetcode-style general coding interviews. If you want to prepare for the interviews, we suggest working on hands-on LLM evals projects (e.g. as suggested in our starter guide ), such as building LM agent evaluations in Inspect .

Quin is an 11 strong, female-founded, digital health startup building products for chronic health conditions. Our first app, which helps people with Type 1 Diabetes make decisions about their self-care, was launched in the UK last year. Quin challenges conventional thinking and the received wisdom of the medical and pharmaceutical worlds. Our company values are Show Love, Find Truth and Be Excellent and we'd love to meet potential team mates who think these are good starting points for a fun and satisfying place to work. We believe the more inclusive we are as a company, the better our product will be. We take extra steps to build a balanced team and a workplace where all sorts of humans can belong. Should you need any accommodations to our recruiting process, just let us know. We know that imposter syndrome is real, so please do get in touch even if you don't quite match all of the things we mention. As we are such a small team though, we think we would struggle to support someone who is early career right now. We're replacing a really experienced developer, and so far my efforts to clone the existing team have come to nothing. We need to maintain the team's velocity. We will be open to earlier career applicants later in the year. Some interesting facts about us: Most of the engineering team have learnt Swift since joining Quin. Our track record is hiring developers who are good at the stuff they know, but who still want to learn more of the stuff they don't yet know. While no-one loves a list, for this role, familiarity with two or more of Java, Javascript, Clojure, Kotlin, Python and Swift would be really useful. We were picked for Apple Entrepreneur Camp , Apple's way of supporting Black and female-founded businesses in the iOS ecosystem. Since our launch last September, we are the most downloaded diabetes app in the UK & Ireland and are planning to roll the app out to the US this year. Our ML work was shortlisted by The Engineer for being a great example of engineering innovation. We really value creative collaboration, pragmatism, and continuously improving our processes and practices. You'll often find us pair programming, and we find practices like TDD help us maintain a well factored codebase. About the role: We're looking for a thoughtful, creative, and experienced Software Engineer as one of the team moves into a product management role. The Quin approach uses science, engineering, and design to build products that empower people to make better decisions and provide personalised support. This is the role where all your experience and interests could get used: your work in large-scale enterprise development, the iOS app you built, the website where you wireframed the user journey, your interest in psychology or how the human body works and your fascination for hardware and embedded systems. We love meeting the whole human, so we're not just interested in your engineering skills! Our techstack: Our iOS app is written in Swift and uses Realm DB for persistence. We make heavy use of HealthKit to interface with blood sugar and activity monitoring devices. Parse is our backend, with smatterings of Python for data analysis. We'll start building for Android next, so this is going to evolve very quickly. Responsibilities: You love being part of a team. You're the kind of person who finds new ways to work (especially remotely), makes things better for everyone, loves helping others to grow and improves psychological safety and collaboration across the team. A pragmatic approach to software engineering; the needs of the user come first, technology is a means of solving a problem, and you break complex problems down into smaller stories. Underpinning all of this is a desire to get started with the simplest possible thing and build from there. You want to shape what gets built. You want to do more than just write code and you're excited about being part of a creative, evolving Product Team that loves trying new things. Comfortable working in a codebase where you're jointly responsible for everything from the UI layer to the backend services (and everything in between!) - 28 days holiday Employee share option scheme Pension 77% of our team are from groups under-represented in tech We'll start with asking you to answer some questions about how you work and we'll use these, along with your CV/profile to decide who to interview. The first conversation will be with our recruiter. We'll then shortlist down to four, who will spend three hours over Zoom with the team. Ideally we'd do all of these on the same day. We would like to make an offer by mid-March and have someone start in April. Our existing team member's move into the product team is dependent on finding her successor, so we have a strong preference for a maximum four week notice period.Swift, JavaScript, Kotlin, TDD, Mobile DevelopmentiOS, Swift, Python, JavaScript, Kotlin, Clojure, Java
