Carry out the full range of activities associated with radar mode design and verification/validation. Actively involve in design and development activities for Radar Modes, although some of this will be delegated to engineers within the team. Coach and develop the team and have overall ownership of the technical design and delivery in this area. What you'll bring On top of an Engineering / Physics / Applied Maths or equivalent background, and ideally Radar Systems Engineering or Signal Processing experience. Good knowledge of radar principles and associated processing techniques, particularly signal processing and detection theory. Ability to focus on signal processing while having a good understanding of other aspects of the system, including radar control and tracking, and how these interact. Experience supervising a team of Systems engineers. Know how to build and maintain complex systems models and analysis tools. Demonstrate skills to perform data analysis of large data sets, using automated processing where appropriate. Possess good investigative and problem solving skills. In depth experience of presenting to and influencing stakeholders from all functions and levels, based on strong technical competence and good reasoning skills. Proven experience in roles requiring sound engineering judgement while operating in a fast paced environment, balancing this with technical rigour and quality in the design solution. Job Description Your impact We are looking for a Firmware/FPGA engineer to join Leonardo in Edinburgh or Newcastle, a world-class defence technology company. We develop cutting edge radars for the Eurofighter Typhoon and SAAB Gripen fighter jets, as well as maritime and airborne surveillance systems. We are also investors in innovation, undertaking all our own research to fuel our future products. We are recruiting talented, motivated engineers to join our growing Electronics team and we have a position for a Senior or Principal level Engineer. We can support the right engineer to be based in our Newcastle office but visits to the Edinburgh site would be an expected part of the role. This is an exciting opportunity for you as an engineer to bring your skill set and knowledge to a fast paced, dynamic and forward thinking working environment. You will be involved with Firmware/FPGA development across the Radar and Advanced Targeting line of business, working as part of a larger, multi-disciplinary team. The key duties of the role will be design and development of firmware designs, managing your development activities through the project and engineering life cycles and delivering the required solution. As a Firmware / FPGA Engineer you will be responsible for: Hardware requirements capture and firmware design. Work as part of a team to meet milestones for on time delivery. Ability to design RTL using VHDL is essential, knowledge of Verilog an advantage but not essential. Implementing high speed, multi-frequency clocking architectures. Experience of FPGA architectures such as SoC system on chip (e.g. Xilinx Versal) an advantage. Experience in the use of Vendor IP e.g. Ethernet, Gigabit transceivers, DDR interfaces etc. Knowledge of Version management using Subversion, GIT or CVS. Specifying timing and area constraints for efficient FPGA place and route. Familiarity with Mentor Graphics FPGA development tools including HDL Designer and ModelSim / Questa is an advantage but not vital. A methodical approach to the full firmware design lifecycle, working to a structured firmware process such as RTCA DO 254 or similar. De bugging firmware designs, supporting verification and integration at hardware and system level alongside Software and Electronic Engineers. Verification techniques (test benching) using VHDL. Next generation ESCAN radars are now in full scale production and being delivered to our customer on the front-line, where we strive to provide key functionality and capability to meet the customer operational requirementsWe are recruiting for a Lead Systems Engineer to lead the operational evaluation for the Typhoon ECRS Mk0 (ESCAN) radar against the operational Fitness for Purpose (FFP) criteria.FFP is a non-contractual framework that has been agreed between Euroradar and our purchaser, BAESYSTEMS, to aid the prioritisation of System Problem Reports (SysPRs) with the aim of reaching an acceptable level of product maturity against agreed operationally relevant criteria.The Lead Systems Engineer will lead a team responsible for: Product gap analysis against operationally relevant scenarios Problem Report identification and sentencing Problem Report prioritisation Identifying when maturity goals are met. Supporting compliance statements against the Specification Co-ordinate the agile 'on-train' maturity assessment activities through the Product Manager and technical leadership team, which will be delivered by those SMEs. Planning and presentation of maturity point reviews with key internal and external stakeholders. Identifying clear gaps in product maturity and support the sentencing of SySPRsAs Lead Systems Engineer, you will work within the Typhoon delivery sector, leading and co-ordinating the Leonardo UK Systems Engineering activity for evaluating the Mk0 radar product maturity for the Entry-Into-Service product.There are two software development releases planned to deliver an operationally capable radar that meets the specification. The candidate will need to be highly motivated and able to define and lead activities for producing maturity metrics and analysis tools to present product maturity to the Chief Engineer and Technical Director to ensure that we focus on the correct changes to meet FFP and compliance objectives. This role presents an opportunity to be at the heart of the success of the Typhoon ECRS Mk0 Radar System, achieving customer satisfaction with this product. This role is pivotal to the reputation and the future business winning success for Leonardo.In the role you will report to the Leonardo UK Chief Systems Engineer. Key Skills: Experience of Radar Systems Design and/or Qualification at a Lead Engineer level. Familiarity with the principles of Pulsed Doppler radar waveform design and signal processing implementation. Familiarity with the principles of Radar tracking and trade-offs against supporting detection schemes. Experience of certification to recognised standards including experience in Integration, Test, Evaluation and Acceptance (ITEA). Experience of data analysis from radar flight trials. Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to obtain SC security clearance and work within UKEO and US ITAR TAA restrictions. Experience of working with a variety of internal and external stakeholders of varying seniorities, with a demonstrable ability to make, and help teams make, timely decisions. What else would help: A 2:1 or higher in a relevant engineering or science-based honours degree Chartered Engineer status is desirable. Experience of the application of the regulatory environment for airborne products, e.g. MAA, EASA. Experience of delivering training and awareness courses. Experience with any of the following tools: Matlab, Simulink, Siemens Teamcenter, IBM DOORS.
