In this pivotal role, you will be the engineer others look to when a problem is hard, when a design decision has downstream consequences, or when someone needs to hold the thread across mechanical, electronic, and software domains. The role is primarily office and lab-based at our Melbourn site. What you will be doing Investigating and resolving field and manufacturing issues across the sample management product range, taking technical ownership from root cause through to implemented solution Leading design changes and product improvements, managing the process from concept and feasibility through to design verification and production handover Working collaboratively with electronics, firmware, software, manufacturing, and quality engineers, acting as the mechanical lead and systems integrator across those disciplines Contributing to design reviews, risk assessments, and design for manufacturability activities Supporting the service and applications teams with technical guidance on complex field issues Identifying and championing longer-term improvement opportunities within the product portfolio About us: Based in Melbourn, near Cambridge, UK, SPT Labtech creates innovative products that transform how scientists work. What matters is genuine mechanical depth combined with the systems thinking to understand how your decisions propagate into other domains. Essential Requirements A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline; a Master's qualification is advantageous, but equivalent industry experience is equally valued Significant experience in product development, ideally in scientific instrumentation, laboratory automation, medical devices, or a comparably demanding hardware environment A strong mechanical engineering foundation: mechanism design, thermal management, tolerancing, DFM/DFS, with demonstrable experience delivering products through to manufacture Proven ability to work across multidisciplinary teams, with sufficient understanding of electronics and software to engage confidently with specialists, interrogate technical trade-offs, and make informed decisions at a system level Experience leading technical work packages or project teams, with the ability to plan, manage risk, and deliver to milestones Proficiency in SolidWorks or comparable parametric 3D CAD, including use within a managed PDM environment Strong analytical and fault-finding skills, with a methodical approach to root cause investigation Clear and effective communicator, able to translate technical complexity for different audiences Desirable skills and experience Experience with mechanical refrigeration systems, particularly in the -20 C to -80 C range, this is directly relevant to our cold storage portfolio and would be a significant advantage Experience with thermal analysis or simulation, such as FEA-based thermal modelling, particularly in the context of managing heat transfer, condensation, or insulation performance in complex enclosures Exposure to motion control, embedded sensors, or fluidics in a product context Working knowledge of relevant safety standards, including IEC 61010 and the Machinery Directive/Regulation Any familiarity with automated liquid handling systems operating in the µl to nl regime would be a welcome bonus Our commitment to you: You'll be working with talented professionals in a motivated and driven team. We offer a competitive salary package and comprehensive, valued benefits, including private medical insurance, a generous pension plan, and an annual discretionary bonus. We embrace diversity and inclusivity, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical ability, or family status. We prioritise supporting our employees' diverse needs as we strive for excellence together.

Systems Engineer
Arctic Research and Development
The last frontier The Arctic is a place of extremes: unforgiving, untamed, and undergoing rapid change. A literal defrosting reveals a multi-trillion-dollar opportunity spanning energy, defence, logistics, research, and infrastructure. ARD was founded on a paradox. The Arctic is both the next great economic frontier and one of the most hostile environments on Earth. Rich in resources and strategically vital, yet bone chillingly cold, dark for months, and fundamentally inhospitable to humans. This paradox-an explosion of activity in a place that resists human presence-is why we exist. Our solution is autonomy. We build systems that operate reliably and intelligently in the Arctic, so that humans don't always have to. Founded by record holding pioneers with decades of polar experience, we take calculated risks on hard problems that matter. If you want to build and deploy ground up technology with real world impact, at an inflection point in history that won't reappear, we'd like to talk. The role As a Systems Engineer at ARD, you'll sit at the nerve centre of our product stack - designing, integrating, and owning the connective tissue between software, electronics, autonomy, and Arctic ready hardware. You'll go from whiteboard to working system, navigating the challenges of Arctic constraints with clarity and speed. This role is equal parts architect, integrator, and hands on problem solver - with a direct line to the field, the client, and the mission. Core responsibilities Own the system architecture from first sketch to deployed stack - across hardware, software, and subsystems Lead integration across ARD's product line - ensuring a software hardware fluency Build in reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety (RAMS) from day one Conduct in depth analysis to identify potential risks and system vulnerabilities Ensure all solutions adhere to safety protocols, industry standards, and governmental guidelines Travel to the Arctic when needed for R&D field testing and client meetings What we value 5+ years of hands on systems engineering experience - across hardware/software boundaries Degree in Systems, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with a demonstrable portfolio of previous work Deep understanding of system design, architecture, and integration in rugged, distributed environments Strong communication across disciplines - you can speak "mechanical", "RF", and "code" Proven ability to ship complex projects under real constraints - cost, time, temperature Field readiness - you're operationally capable and ready to test gear in sub zero environments What we offer Competitive compensation Equity - meaningful options as an early employee at an early stage company Real field exposure - travel to Arctic sites and outposts when needed (genuinely, not as a gimmick) Mission driven culture - focus on impact, not hours logged Small team, real ownership - what you build matters and ships A note on who we want to hear from We're building for one of the most demanding environments on Earth and we believe diverse teams build more resilient systems. We actively welcome applications from people who are underrepresented in engineering - whether that's by gender, ethnicity, disability, or background. If you're not sure you meet every requirement, apply anyway and tell us what excites you about the problem.
