Human Factors Consultant - Defence (Contract) Location: UK (Hybrid/Remote options available) Contract Length: Initial 6-12 Months Rate: 75 to 85 per hour Security Clearance: Current SC clearance desirable, or eligibility to obtain clearance We are seeking an experienced Human Factors Consultant to support a range of complex Defence programmes. Working alongside Systems Engineering, Safety, Design and Operational teams, you will deliver Human Factors and Human Systems Integration (HSI) activities that ensure military systems, platforms and equipment are safe, effective and optimised for end-user performance in demanding operational environments. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to high-profile Defence projects across land, maritime, air and joint-domain systems. Key Responsibilities Deliver Human Factors Engineering (HFE) and Human Systems Integration (HSI) activities throughout the systems engineering lifecycle. Conduct Human Factors assessments to support requirements definition, system design, verification and validation. Perform Cognitive Task Analysis (CTA), Hierarchical Task Analysis (HTA), workload assessment and operational user analysis. Conduct usability evaluations, trials, simulations and verification activities for Defence systems and equipment. Work closely with Systems Engineers, Safety Engineers, Designers and Operational Subject Matter Experts to integrate human-centred design principles into system development. Contribute to design reviews and provide Human Factors recommendations to influence engineering decisions. Essential Experience Proven experience delivering Human Factors Engineering activities within Defence, Aerospace, Maritime, Nuclear, Rail or other safety-critical industries. Strong understanding of Human Factors methodologies, analyses and assessment techniques. Experience supporting Systems Engineering and Safety Engineering activities throughout the project lifecycle. Knowledge of Human-Machine Interface (HMI) design principles and operator-centred system design. Experience conducting task analysis, workload assessment and human error analysis. Ability to produce technical reports and present findings to engineering and programme stakeholders. Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills. The role of a Human Factors Engineer is to provide Rail Human Factors/ Ergonomics support to the People Centred Design elements of WSP project work. This includes RAG team led work and collaborating with other teams as part of multi-discipline project work. The focus within the capability is on Specialist Ergonomic Assessments (Task Analysis, Situation Awareness, Workload) Operational Concepts and Plans, Maintenance Concepts and Plans, Customer Experience Strategies, Staff Recruiting and Training Strategies. The team consists of Human Factors Specialists and Station Operations Specialists working across numerous projects for multiple clients including HS2, Network Rail/ Network Rail Scotland and Crossrail. We are looking for a Service Design Lead: Digital Services to lead advances in the latest research thinking on Inclusive Design and Human Factors and to help shape a new initiative within a true world class leader. Our Cambridge based client is seeking somebody who will be the lead design authority for user experiences in new digital services, with a broad overview of all the stakeholders, encompassing end users, back office functions and technical operations. With a focus on the digital services, you will also need to work very closely with UI and industrial designers to establish a coordinated end-to-end service design. With an excellent degree in Software Engineering or a related discipline, the successful candidate will have significant experience in applying formal User Experience orientated design methods to real world problems, especially those where Digital Services plays a central role. You will also have practical experience of business analysis techniques and the use of BPM tools such as BizAgi. Main Responsibilities: * Lead multi-disciplinary project teams of Engineers, Consultants and Designers to realise your insights for simple, accessible and easy to use services that take into account a deep understanding of a broad range of stakeholders and the context in which they will be using the service * Combine formal User Experience orientated design methods with a strong sense of empathy to understand the needs and behaviours of the users of the service and to translate this into robust requirements * Work with partners to adopt and adapt the latest research in Inclusive Design to become a robust toolkit and methodology for measuring and designing Digital Services * Lead customers in workshops, focus groups and field studies to map, measure and improve their product and service offerings Qualifications, Skills and Experience: * Excellent degree in Software Engineering or a related discipline * Significant experience in applying formal User Experience orientated design methods to real world problems, especially those where Digital Services plays a central role * Practical experience of business analysis techniques and the use of BPM tools such as BizAgi * Awareness of the latest thinking in Inclusive Design and have a vision for how it can be applied to digital services * Significant experience in facilitating and leading workshops and group discussions * Experience of working with multi-disciplinary development teams * Experience in deploying and supporting services through pilot and into commercial operations * Proven leadership and communication skills
