Server Engineer (Contract)

Location: Cheltenham (Hybrid - 3 days on-site)

Day Rate: £350 - 425 per day (IR35 to be determined)

Duration: 6 months (minimum 3 months, likely extension)

Our client, a leading organisation within the technology and services sector, is seeking an experienced Server Engineer to support and enhance their on-prem Windows Server estate. This role will play a key part in stabilising legacy environments, improving operational processes, and helping plan the transition towards Azure.

What you'll do

• Provide hands-on support across a multi-version Windows Server estate ()
• Lead discovery work across servers and environments to understand ownership, configuration, and required improvements
• Carry out day-to-day server administration and desktop support across Cheltenham sites
• Contribute to planning activities for server migrations, including on-prem and Azure
• Establish foundational processes and documentation for long-term support
• Manage contract renewals and support agreements relating to the infrastructure

You'll work closely with technical teams, on-site operations, and external suppliers to stabilise legacy services and define a clearer, more efficient support model.

What we're looking for

• Strong experience with on-prem Windows Server (including legacy versions)
• Background in server administration, troubleshooting, and maintenance
• Ability to assess existing infrastructure and recommend improvements
• Experience supporting desktop environments in a mixed estate
• Understanding of Azure migrations or hybrid-cloud planning

The ideal candidate will be proactive, structured, and comfortable working in a mixed legacy environment while helping drive modernisation.
